Okay so I read this entire forum and haven't found anything on st50 vs gt50 except few people saying it extra features dual core and has twice as many shades of graduation. Is this worth the price difference. what about picture quality?

Sorry for all these questions just about to buy a TV on memorial day weekend replacing my 42 g25 that broke.

Worth price difference? Depends: What IS the price difference?
How much is your money worth to you, as opposed to the extra features / style the GT50 adds?

This really comes down to a matter of Personal Opinion - at least so far as the Price/Performance choice is concerned.

If you have to ask, it definitely not worth the money. Only high end anal videophiles might see the difference. Dnice tends to think it isn't worth much at all.

Did you not read the Official GT50 thread? The differences between the GT50 and ST50 are in the first few posts of that thread.

Picture quality in Custom mode and Cinema mode should be virtually the same as on the ST50 (which is excellent), but the GT50 does add the THX modes that are very popular and do not exist on the ST50 and that is a big feature to a lot of people. I have historically disliked THX mode on my G10 and also on the 2010 and 2011 models, but this year that THX Daytime mode looked pretty good when i auditioned the GT50 at Magnolia.

The extra features, THX modes, and bezel design are worth the extra money to some people but not to other people. It is to me, but only you can decide if it's worth it to you.

The THX alone is a reason to go for the GT, IMHO. I love it and that;s what I have been using on my V10. I understand the 2012 model has an even better THX mode.

Cool thanks alot .

Don't care much for features but picture performance is a must which I'm assuming will be amazing compared to the g25 any which way I go. I'm looking for a 50'.

Are the picture settings the same between gt50 and st50? For customization purposes.

That to me will make my final decision to say the least easier, as many are saying we won't notice the double shades on gt50 so it comes down to the customization for me.

Thanks. It's being built from an old PC that can barely handle 1080i, and even then only when it's mpeg2 (not H.264). It has no muscle left to deinterlace as well. If the Panny does the work, it'll be a nice cheap HD DVR.

I don't think this has been mentioned: are these sets rvu enabled? I'm wondering if you can use these as clients for the directv HR34? Last year, only certain Samsung sets were rvu enabled....I was hoping it would be everywhere this year, but maybe not.

If you watched your g25 mostly with THX, and/or did not have it calibrated, and have no intention of calibrating your new tv, then I highly recommend the GT50. I have both the G25 & the GT50. Also, if you want both a bright and dark room option then the GT50 is the answer, especially if you're not going to have the tv professionally calibrated.

If you read the entire forum then compare the complaints rather than the differences for a different perspective.

It's going for $150 more than the X3, if that's even still available, which doesn't seem to be the case online...

I still love my G25 but it's got nothing on the GT50. The GT50 has not only deeper blacks but better shadow detail, and the entire picture is crisper and cleaner.

IMO, the achievements realized with thx bright room mode places the "death of plasma" even further out of reach.

Note: the g25 is 42" and the gt50 is currently 55".

Does anyone have the IP protocol info for these sets. I would like to switch to IP control for my Redeye remote device, but need the interface details. Any help would be appreciated. I did download the Viera app and it is pretty nice, but wanted to add some commands to my main control setup.

If you find an easier protocol please post or feel free to PM me I also couldn't ever figure out how to get the ST50 to use WOL, so you may be stuck turning the TV on with infrared first. However, if you have the GT50 or VT50, the rumor is they support a WOL like feature.

Noticed that Paul's TV has the 55" GT50 for the same price as the 60" ST50. Now I'm torn between the two, wife says go for the larger size, I'm trending to the potentially better PQ and more features. 6 months from will I regret not having the extra features or not having the extra 5"?

It will depend on what's important to you. I prefer size although the THX modes on the GT are really nice.

I've printed a visio diagram comparing the 46" (what I have) to the 55" and 60". While there is a major difference between the 46 and 55, I don't see that big a deal between the 55 and 60. I'll wait another 36 hours before pulling the trigger, I have yet to find a place where I can compare the st50 side by side with the gt50.

The price of the 65GT50 has just begun to drop and may drop even more over the weekend, at least on Amazon it might. Do you have some time before you must purchase?

How far away is your seating distance? I apologize if you've said and I missed it.

We sit between 10 and 12 feet away, the screen would be mounted over the fireplace, so unfortunately it wont be at the perfect viewing height or angle. 65" would be too large I think (may overwhelm the room), 60" is max ( we have a 46" panny now). Ideally, I'd just wait it out for the 60GT50 if I was confident prices would drop in the next couple months (to what the 60ST50 goes for today ).

I haven't seen anything like that, but if you disregard the GT50's THX modes, the ST50 should have virtually the same picture qualities as the GT50 on all the other picture modes (Custom, Cinema, etc) since they share the exact same Plasma Panel and AR Filter.

The only real advantage the GT50 has in the PQ department is that is adds the THX modes which look great. The ST50 doesn't have this.

I should add that when viewing a DVD-R the both the original recording device and the DVD player used for playback are a big part of SD PQ, and in that regard my Panasonic EH55 HDD recorder and H/K DVD-48 are both outstanding.

But D-Nice stated that he sees no advantage to this on the GT50's picture quality, and i think he (or another calibrator) said that it actually causes a few more minor issues in other areas. Verdict - it's a virtually useless marketing gimmick

kinda like the 2500 ffd, which i saw vs 600 sub field drive, UT50 vs U50 and I noticed very li'l difference, if @ all. another marketing gimmick if u ask me................
