First of all, Samsung plasmas DO have issues they're just not the same ones.
Traditionally, Panasonic has been a leader in picture quality when it comes to plasma so their name is well respected by both consumers and reviewers alike. While the gap has closed between Panasonic and it's competitors the last couple of years, Panasonic is still a leader in black level reproduction which cnet calls the single most important aspect affecting picture quality. In addition, panasonic's position and reputation within the industry tends to attract a 'pickier' customer that will be more critical of flaws that another customer might ignore/not notice. Whether or not this is fair is up to you.
(btw, I'm including myself in that group above)
As for myself, I have no doubt Samsung can assemble a quality product-- my concern is more for their after-the-sale support and reliability. My 2500 bluray player hasn't failed on me but it regularly won't play discs and Samsung hasn't updated the firmware in nearly 2 years... Not exactly confidence inspiring.
