I recommend getting the ST50 and use the saved money to get it calibrated. Just make sure you get it done by someone who really has experirence with the displays as standard calibration methods do not apply with these displays... not even the 2011 Panasonic calibration "tricks" are applicable.

thanks D-Nice for all the outstanding work you did for the community, you're def tha Man

Sounds impressive! Very curious to hear how the 65VT50 will be now.

Certainly some definitive (all be they early) statements from folks about the quality of the 2012 Panasonics.

I presume you have not had the opportunity to thoroughly review a GT50, right?

Let's hope Panasonic gets their act together and produces enough of these and we don't end up with post-christmas scarcity like we did last year.

But most of what I see in regards to opinions on 24p playback is that it more or less is like the interpolation motion-smoothing "soap opera effect" features of 120Hz LCD sets and hurts the image and motion more than it helps it. Anything more concrete you can tell me? I was pretty set on saving for the VT50 but I'm just thinking on not bothering and going with the ST50. 96Hz I thought was the one feature that would be worth the price difference, but if that's still a wash, I can't see much other benefit to justify the huge jump in price (as well as waiting time).

ST50's looking more and more like the way to go for me...unless a comparably-priced Samsung can one-up Panasonic...lol I'm so undecided and it seems like the more research I do the more undecided I am haha.

The 96Hz mode on last year's VT30 was junk. Lots of visible artifacts (that you don't have to go looking for) which make it unusable. 48Hz has way too much flicker.

Hopefully Panasonic has a decent 96Hz mode in this year's VT50, but if they don't improve it, it's not a selling point as it is unusable in my opinion (and many others).

The TH-50PF11UK came out four years ago at the same price point as a VT and has no problem displaying 96 Hz (if there is any DFC it's something you have to really search for). Are we really still having this conversation? Surely Panasonic has found a way with all this 5 lumen tech and faster sub fields to include a satisfactory 96 Hz feature in their flagship consumer-grade plasma by now?

Not as of 2011. Any of the pros will tell you 96Hz mode has too many artifacts to be watchable. The first movie I tried in 96Hz on my VT30 displayed visible artifacts within a few minutes. I switched to 60Hz mode and the artifacts went away (not that 60Hz mode when fed a 24p signal is perfect either).

Are you still only using the standard adjustments, NOT the service menu?

There is no reason to go into the SM on these displays unless you wanted to calibrate Cinema mode.

Now that we're discussing framerates and since you always are so informed, D-nice, I'm very curious about your thoughts about tv's implementing support for native 1080p60 hz or the like in the near future.

I know a lot of people are hoping for this this but there is a remarkable silence from the TV-companies. Primary use would be for the coming video games and a potential support for the coming movies that are filmed in this way (the Hobbit and Avatar 2)

Is it likely that it will come or do you think that the actual technology itself is a bottleneck that prevents this?

5 lumen tech does not exist in any Panasonic display on the market.

Sounds like I need to throw my 65ST30 in the garbage can.

I'm not really a gamer nor do I know of any movie that will be using 1080p/60 (1080p/48 is what Peter Jackson and James Cameron will use), so I don't have any thoughts on 1080p/60.

???

My Xboxes and PS3 output 1080p/60hz and every tv in my house accepts and displays it...

Thank you! Sounds pretty good for the user controls. Guess I will have to get over my dislike of the ST50's looks. Maybe after I see it in person.

lol

Yeah, I bought my 65ST30 knowing damned well the ST50 would be a nice improvement, but I was starting to hate the picture quality on my SXRD and got the 65ST30 for a great price and really do enjoy it. If there are some ridiculous end of year prices on a 65ST50 in a year from now (such as Fry's $1499 65ST30/65GT30 deal fairly recently), I may be tempted assuming I could get $1000-1200 for my 65ST30 on Craigslist. But I will stop thinking that far ahead. There's always something better every year anyway. The tortures of this hobby.

Do you recall from previous callibration how the ST50 compares to the GT30?

DNice,

I see a lot of people knock Panasonic on their "color accuracy" vs. Samsung. Can you explain your opinion on this? I always assumed that if you're able to properly calibrate a set, color accuracy can be achieved.

No, some sets are just unable to be calibrated properly. Think of it like the adjustments under your drivers seat-- you have individual controls but any one adjustment can throw another off. I'm sure a calibrator of Dnice's stature would be able to do wonders but even some displays are beyond his powers...

I read Kuro had an additional 72hz option as opposed to the standard 48hz, 60hz, and 96hz.... What ever happened to 72hz?

It's not so much the 72hz or 96hz, but rather the degree of sophistication in the processing and the implementation and execution. Pioneer seemed to handle 24fps conversion with aplomb at 72hz. Panasonic, whether 48hz or 96hz, ehh..... not so much.

In that case, I'd like to see a CalMan report on the VT30 if anyone has one. I'd like to compare it to what I was able to get out of my UNxxD8000 (see sig).

Beyond the stand, the ST30 looks good. Looks very similar to Samsung 6500/7000 models.

I have a GT30 calibration report on HDJ. You can go there and see for yourself.

This is awesome. Thanks for the tip, D-Nice!

Sorry if this has already been asked, but when is the 2012 shootout? Will you be there again? This is extremely impressive stuff.
The 2012 Shootout is suppose to happen at the end of August if all goes well.
