Have the power consumption figures been published yet?

I think they reduced the power consumption this year, but most of the savings are lost from the increased brightness. Cnet, AVForums and HDTVtest (latter two being EU models) published their power consumption readings in their respective reviews.

I get email notifications when someone posts to certain threads. When I read this in my email, my heart jumped, my breath caught in my chest and a chill ran up my leg.

This is going to be a fun year!

The AVForums review of the VT50 had a small quote buried in it that I need confirmed or denied by people who have owned or tested the 2012 series plasmas:

Someone please tell me they got this wrong. 2012 is the first year Panasonic has finally decided to support 4:4:4 chroma subsampling using "1080p Pure Direct Mode", surely they wouldn't be stupid enough to not allow RGB Full Range over HDMI, only DVI?

What purpose would you have for 0-255 anyway?

I could get a ST for almost 500$ less than a GT (50 inch). I don't know if the extra features are with that much money.

I really wish Panasonic hadn't discontinued the 42" size in new ST50 series, as I'm looking for a new bedroom display.

There's a calibrated power figure published in the Cnet review. It's 247w for a 55" ST50 after the display was calibrated. (Out of box was 142w by the way, and apparently way too dim.) Looks like that's about 12-13% less than last year's 55" VT30 by way of comparison.

I would ignore Panasonic's published numbers as they will be fairly unhelpful.

I'm facing the dilemma of ST50 VS GT50.

I don't think I will be able to see them in person before I buy.

I doubt anyone would be sorry they bought the better of the 2, or 3. That's why I'm holding out for the VT50. If I bought the ST or the GT, I'd eventually wish I had the VT. But, I spend a great deal of time watching movies with good sound system.

I would jump on either one blindly based on the reputation of the company and the reviewers alone. Panasonic makes an awesome tv. The ST50 is supposed to be on par or better than the VT30 from last year if that tells you anything.

I took a chance and bought the 50ST50 from Amazon and it arrived early this morning. I am happy to say that ugly faces in shadows no longer happens

Everything else seems great, and I can tell that the set is brighter overall as well.

For what it's worth, I'm about to buy the 60st50 from a forum sponsor. I called to confirm that he has them in stock (which was a "yes"). I also asked about the picture quality of the ST vs the GT vs the VT. His opinion was that for actually watching stuff, you would be unlikely to tell the difference between them.

Any dissenters?

My concern continues to be lack of picture controls on the ST and GT models. These could have a real-world impact in PQ.

So if you want a 60", this is easy to me.

First of all, regular humans are unlikely to perceive the GT as having a better picture. In this case, I count myself as a regular human.

Second of all, the ST design is simple and neutral. While some people like the GT design, I find it hideous. YMMV of course.

Third of all, since you are after a 60", there is no reason to wait for the VT, which is coming in 55" and 65".

I would also like to know more about this - I really hope this is wrong. I was very excited to hear the 2012 models will support 4:4:4 chroma subsampling, and I was assuming it would apply to HDMI also, since that is how I will be connecting my pc. If it doesn't apply to HDMI that will be a disappointment. Who with a newer video card is going to use DVI and not HDMI, especially when HDMI supports audio?

I'm considering either the ST or GT so if anybody can confirm or deny this please do.

I also found this in the same review:

"Yet another new option exists in the 1080p Pure Direct setting that promises to allow for the passing of a full 4:4:4 video signal over HDMI, allowing for slightly enhanced chromatic resolution. The acceptance of 4:4:4 is new ground for Panasonic PDP and another sign they’re taking the enthusiast market seriously."

Doesn't this contradict this quote later in the review:?

"The DVI Input can be set to Normal/Full where Normal represents video level signals (16-235) and Full corresponds to PC levels (0-255) but if the input is straight HDMI – rather than a HDMI to DVI connection – the VT50 will automatically operate in Normal mode."

So does it or doesn't it? Can anybody elaborate?
