That depends on if you think the following features / capabilities are worth the extra. Given you paid $120, that's $130 difference. Tough call.

3) Two HDMI outputs (allows split Audio/video if required)
4) Super Bit Mapping
5) SKype support when used with additional camera
7) Additional levels of customization of video quality (many pre-sets, and user modes) for both internet video (IP Noise Reduction Pro) and BD, DVD and DLNA. More impressed with these than I thought I would be.
8) 4K upscaling
9) Improved remote control
10) others ??

so it seems the 790 is not worth the upgrade from the 780.
i have two 780s,

i dont need dual HDMI
i dont need the 4K

the 780 has pretty much all of the other features.

not meaning to derail the thread, but the guy who posted the review has the 780 and it would be great for a comparison chart between the 780 and 790.


the review was nicely done, though.

You asked him about the Oppo which really tells me nothing. All those picture enhancements are already available on the S780.

I only just got the S780 last week and I could still exchange it for the S790 if I wanted to but I see now that there's no need.

Thanks a lot for all the work you put into your reviews for us. I agree with your review about dual hdmi outputs. I don't want my video signal being molested by my AVR. I had 2 failed attempts at samsungs 2011 bd-d6700 (dual hdmi) having various issues and had to return them. Out of desperation i tried the panny bdt-320 (single hdmi) but had issues with it as well. I'm waiting for this player to hit best buy to use up some gift cards. Can you tell me something about it's dual hdmi output? Will it send audio and video to both hdmi outputs at the same time? I see it has the separation mode where video goes to 1 and audio goes to 2 which i will use and set back to dual a/v if it can do that. Trying to keep things simple for g-friend. She likes to change AVR outputs directly on my onkyo tx-nr609 front panel. Can't get her to use my harmony 700. Hope this makes sense. Thanks, Mike

Hi and thanks. I also have the 780 (in our bedroom now) so I can't knock it. I will say the 790 is better though. It runs more smoother and responds better. Image wise I would also say the 790 surpasses it. Mainly because it has better noise ccontrol. My 780 has more of it (not that it is bad in anyway) than the 790 has. I may open them up today to compare the chips. I think the 790 has a newer one. I have a call into Sony to confirm. If it is a big hassle I wouldn't swap them out but if it is hardly any trouble I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I am swapping my HDMI cable out soon to do more comparisons. So far I love the picture adjusting and how the 790 implements them. Still it does do a great job of up scaling to 4K. The fact that I need more time to compare is a huge compliment.

Simple is good. Jaclyn proof is what I call it.

The Hdmi 1 when engaged with Separation Mode will only send video. Hdmi 2 will then only do audio. This is the sweet spot though.

Another point. The Dual Hdmi outs do make a difference. Being able to separate video and audio then send the video directly to your display (home run shot) is the most optimal solution. I have done it both ways many times and recently with the 780. The 790 is sending the best image I have seen to date with both blu ray 2D and 3D using it's Hdmi 1 for video.

Joe, Have you noticed any problems with audio delay when using the dual outputs? I noticed you use your Onkyo for pre-pro duties so sending the Onkyo the audio, and the video to the projector seems like it would open the door for potential problems with A/V sync. Have you had to make any adjustments for delay on the Onkyo?

Not at all. It actually is perfect. I do have AV Sync on the Onkyo but do not need to use it. The 790 also has it just in case. I also just tried the 790 in my family room sending the image to my TV and sending audio into my Receiver (Sony) without issue as well. All good.

Guys, if you are still on the fence, BUY IT NOW!...This is the best all around BD player I've ever seen thus far. I've owned several players througout the years including Panny's, Sammy's and Sony's a none has even been close to this masterpiece. PQ/AQ is aboslutely the best I've seen, even better than the Panny 320 I had for a few days and better than my old S770 and S780. Loading times? The best I've seen so far. That Avatar Extended Colector's edition that takes forever to load on most people's players, in here not so. If you are still looking for that perfect/near perfect machine to keep for the long term, this is it!

I am not stating it does. I am stating sending hdmi directly to your display is definitely better than going thru a receiver/pre-pro or video processor. I have had many players and receivers/pre-pros as well as video processors. Test patterns will confirm it. So will having an unbelievable projector like the 1000ES.

Not so with the 790. If you try it stops you and says video is only available over hdmi 1 when Separation Mode is engaged. And vice versa when using hdmi 1. It will tell you audio is only on 2.
