SONY BDP-S790 ALERT!!!!! I HAVE THE BDP-S790 FOR 1 WEEK AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE. I DID THE NEW FIRMWARE UPGRADE TODAY AND MOST OF MY BLU RAY DISCS ARE NOT PLAYING. THEY ONLY COME UP AS "DATA BD" AND CANNOT PLAY IN PLAYER. THE ONLY DISC THAT PLAYS IS A 3D BD. I TRIED ABOUT 20 BD'S.
I ALSO HAVE THE SONY BDP-CX7000ES MULTI DISC CHANGER THAT ALL OF THESE BLU RAY DISCS STILL PLAY FINE IN.
HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM YET??
I ALREADY HAVE A NEW PLAYER ON THE WAY TO ME FROM MY ONLINE DEALER.

Updated FW tonight. Left alone after the Upgrade started for over an hour, and then played the Sherlock Holmes Blu-ray - no problems!
Still no listing for the 790 anywhere in Canada - Beach Camera, through Amazon, got me mine in 3 days via FedEx.

From Sony Website:

The model you have entered is only available in the following regions:

Latin America

United States

I guess maybe we're not getting up here in the Great White North!?

All of a sudden the display is no longer in widescreen when playing a dvd. All the settings seem okay. Any ideas?

What was being questioned was someone, not you, jumping to the conclusion that the S790 did a better job at 1080p upscaling just because it can do 4K upscaling. That's an assumption with no data to back it up.

To enable stretch-o-vision (yuck) on this year's sonys, change Screen Settings - Screen Format from Normal to Full and DVD Aspect Ratio to Pan&Scan.

I sent off an e-mail to SONY.ca to inquire about the availability of the 790 here in the Great White North. Usually, these requests do not get answered but, amazingly enough I got a reply later the same day! The reply basically comes down to:

"I understand that you wish to know the availability of the BDP-S790 Blu-ray Player in Canada. Currently, there is no information on the availability of the BDPS790 in Canada. Sony Electronics only releases full product and support information at the same time it is officially released to the marketplace by our Marketing Department. However, some limited advanced information is often published in various magazine articles."

Reference was made to the BDPS-780 that I do not even see a current listing for on the site. The 790 has features not available on the other models, not like it was exactly the same as the other models so I do not know why it is not available.....and, not like the cost should be a factor, probably around $300CA or so! SONY Canada has always been a bit bizarre in the items they sell to Canadians, but sometimes it makes little sense to me.

Cheers,
P.E.H.

Yes - I helped a Canadian Buyer buy a U.S. Model.

I get free shipping but I had to pay to ship to Canada.

Really cool to find the new firmware has indeed sorted out the RGB colourspace issue on PAL over here across the Pond! Having messed about with it since its release, have to say I am more than impressed with this machine. There really is no point in getting something more "expensive" for Blu Ray and DVD upscaling ability - until native 4K arrives...

Oh and for what its worth What Hi Fi did a Supertest of Blu Ray players in their latest issue and it came out on top ahead of the Panasonic BMP500 and Pioneer LX55 amongst many others.

Regards

How's the on-line streaming services on the player for UK users. I guess you have iPlayer, and perhaps Netflix? I read somewhere that Sony were going to offer a special Olympics app for Sony devices just for the 24 Olympic BBC live streams or something.

I'm planing on getting the 790 in a month or two. Cant wait.

Hi, Can anyone please let me know how good these are at reading home-brewed DVD-R etc? How about less than great condition discs? Thanks!

Other than a few Blu-Ray - my S790 plays mostly DVD-R.

They look great

I just got my s790 and I have troubles playing videos with PMS, I did the firmware update and it says corrupt media on all files.

Old S360 plays all .avi files well and even tries to play hd mkvs (lags, but they work).

Any hints? I'm testing different streaming services next, but if you ran to same problems would be great to get a shortcut smile.gif

More on this:

It's a problem having to do with latest Sony *90 FW (at least 590 and 790 firmware) colliding with PMS.

I tried PMS 1.54 and 1.60 and both failed to work on all files, azureus then again played media straight on.

More digging, it's something to do with MIME information,

This post helped me to play all mkvs and most avis:

http://www.ps3mediaserver.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=14862&start=10#p72025

You have to edit the conf code of SMP-N100 (most sony players identified as this).

So new version of PMS hopefully gets it working smile.gif I hope this helps other people as well.

A solution has also been found for Serviio and Homestream users HERE. I've never had much success with PMS even with the posted fixes.

I have such a s790 together with a Oppo 93.

The oppo works all the time

- the s790 most of the time :-)

I use Oppo for playing US coded material (sone 1/region A),
the Sony plays the rest, all my European discs (bought from amazon uk mostly).

The Oppo has no possibility in playing Netflix, VUDU or amazon VODS

--- thus the Sony plays all the movies I rent :-)

Since I am on the "wrong" side of the great Pond, the datatransfer might cause some "problems"-
-- but now and then my Sony freezes/ lock ups hard, when playing HD movies from Amazon :-((

When it locks up, the only solution is to unplugg it from the "wall outlet", wait som minutes, and plug it in again.
Afterwards, it plays the whole movie without problems.

PS
Updated to latest software yesterday -- no problema.

Hi all. I'm still on the fence about which player to buy, Sony s790 or the Panasonic bdt500. What I would like to know is there any specific reason to buy one over the other? BTW for anyone out there like me who is ready to make a perchess right now Amazon has the Sony S790 for $228 with free Hulu Plus for thee months you have to go to the Sony website for all the info. The Panasonic BDT500 is listed at $244. Any help will do so I can just go a head a press the damn add to cart icon all ready rolleyes.gif

TIA: Menace

PS: Also wanted to add I will be upgrading if you can call it that, from a PS3 first gen 60gig, will there be a visual difference as I know there will be a audio one. My display is a Panasonic 65VT30 with a Onkyo tx-nr3007 providing the sound.

Again thank in advance: Menace

The 500 has analogue outs. The 790 has better file support via usb and dlna. Some report the 790 has the best dvd upscaling on the market, comparable to oppo at half or quarter of the price. I like panny dvd upscaling a lot also.

After my upgrade to M13.R.0443, my S790 stopped playing MP4 over DLNA. Now it always displays the corrupt/unsupported error, but it still works however over USB...
So it went from poor DLNA MP4 support to no DLNA MP4 support... mad.gif I going to try to downgrade.

Downgrading to previous older firmwares is not possible.

Also, what DLNA server are you using? MP4s still play back fine on my 790 with the latest firmware. If you are using Serviio switch the profile the S790 uses from BD player to Bravia 2012.

Yes indeed, I thought I could force it with a previous firmware burned into a CD, but it just tells me that it's already up to date.

I have a Buffalo Linkstation NAS. It was working fine before the firmware upgrade. Except for trick modes not working in .mp4 files, but if I would rename the file to .avi, then trick play would work again. Now with the new firmware no MP4 files play at all...

Give Serviio a try, changing the profile to BRAVIA for the 790. See how you go. At least you're confirm the 790 still works, be it with a different DLNA server.

There are versions of Serviio that run under linux that should work with your NAS.

After being delivered to the wrong address, my new BDP-S790 showed up on my doorstep this morning! I quickly connected it to my HT system and breezed easily through the setup, including the wired Ethernet connection. Putting it through its paces, I was very pleased with the myriad of features and the excellent picture quality. I tried some .ts side-by-side 3D files and they looked fine too. BUT...when I tried playing a 3D Blu-Ray (Lion King 3D) it told me I didn't have a 3D TV and/or 3D receiver and refused to play! Hogwash! I've been playing 3D Blu-Rays with my Playstation 3 for over two years and never had one that failed to play! I tried several others with the same results. I even pulled the HDMI cable out of the PS3 and plugged it into the S790...same results. Apparently, no one else on this forum has had the same issue, but I hope that someone has a suggestion that will lead to the solution!

BTW, the signal path is entirely HDMI 1.4. TV is a Mits DLP with 3D adapter kit & receiver is an Onkyo TX-NR808.

TIA,
Chris

I tried to downgrade to M13.R.0369, but the BDP-S790 did not allow me to downgrade to a previous version. Got "Already upgated" message frown.gif
Is there a way to put a newer version number (example M13.R.0444) in the M13.R.0369 binary identification file MSB13-FW.ID ?

Thanks

I wouldn't worry. The bdp just can't "see" your display as 3d capable. I would call Sony if no one here knows. For whatever reason the Mitsubishi adapter isn't registering with the player. I don't have that gear combo but if the ps3 works with the 3d blu, I'm sure there's an easy "fix"
Have you tried cabling the player directly to the TV?

If it works, then the player is not recognizing the EDID from the receiver. If it doesn't work, then the EDID from the TV is not being recognized. Knowing that would help Sony to produce a fix sooner. Since you mention a 3D kit, I suspect that's what's causing the player's confusion.
All,
I'm an Oppo BDP83 owner who was looking for a decent Blu-ray player with good wireless streaming capabilities.
I decided to give the Sony BDP-S790 a try based upon some on-line reviews and this thread.

Well, the Sony has been in the house for 1 month now and I must say I am very, VERY impressed!
I've been doing side by side comparisons with the Oppo and the PQ is identical...even for DVD up-conversion which is an Oppo strength!

What really sets the Sony apart from the older Oppo is it's flawless wireless streaming capability (not avail on the older Oppo)
and what I think are much better user controls while watching Blu-rays. (Fast forward, 10 second rewind, 15 second advance, etc...)

I originally intended to keep both players... but I haven't even used the Oppo in over 3 weeks so I'm thinking about selling it on Ebay.
The Sony is that good!

Just my 2 cents on this great player!

Pete
