Does the S790 not support HBO Go? I was very surprised when I saw all the video apps but no HBO Go. Is there any way to get HBO Go on the S790?

Hello All,

After spending far too much time getting my networking streaming stuff sorted out, I have failed to spend enough time sorting out the BD settings.

Anybody here have the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Blu-Rays? When I set HDMI audio to AUTO it streams the DTS HD Master Audio as DTS surround. Anybody else getting this? Two other BD's with DTS HD Master stream it as DTS HD Master fine to my Denon AVR-4311ci.

In other words, I know my Denon can Decode HD Mster just fine so why is the Sony downmixing the HD Master to DTS surround for this Blu-Ray. This particular BD streamed it just fine as DTS HD Master from my Pioneer bdp-51fd. Why is my Sony dumbing down this particular track?

Anybody have this Blu-Ray and wants to see if they are getting the same results as me?

The reason I ask is because I don't want to have to toggle HDMI audio from AUTO to PCM between every BD disc just to make sure I Am getting the best possible format for my AVR.

2 things I could think about:

1) are you using both HDMI 1 to tv and HDMI 2 to the Denon? If so, did you make the proper setting to separate video to 1 and audio to 2? Seen that happen when trying the Panasonic BDT500 before I settled on this Sony

2) do you have to extra/secondary audio (the PIP, or bonus view) set to on? I think it is the audio mix option? If so, set to off

Both of these can downgrade the audio being sent out. And the reason some might work if #2 is not off, is because they might not have bonus view.

It is off. It must be something in the LOTR BD disk itself. Just curious, apw2607, do you do AUTO or PCM for HDMI audio?

I have a avr-4311 too. Very nice receiver ! Auto so I just send bitstream out to the 4311 over hdmi and let the receiver deal with the DTS-HD, trueHd, dd+, DSD, DD and DTS.

I don't have any LOTR disks though so can't test for you.

Also, what do you set your video format to:

YCbCr/RGB (HDMI): RGB. YbCr 4:2:0, or YbCr4:4:4?

I've read that my Samsung pn59d8000 can accept native 4:4:4, but just curious what setting you leave this too. From my knowledge, the default is 4:2:0

I also just learned today that if you set your output video format to "AUTO" it will default your resolution all the time to the resolution of the media you COMMONLY play. For instance, I was watching several 720p source mkv files and then when I went to watch a blu-ray it set the resolution to 720p (!). I only noticed it because the FBI warning text looked a little blurry. So now I set it to 1080p no matter what. Interesting how the player is trying to "think" ahead.....

I use YCbCr/RGb to auto which for my display(s) ... Use both HDMI outputs from 4311 .... It's YCbCr 4:4:4 at 10 bit pixel depth.

I force the output format to 1080p ... Rather than auto .... Simply because the Sony logo at boot is then in 1080p rather than 480p if you use auto ... Hahahaha.

The 4311 will provide a detailed on screen display of what video and audio formats are being sent. Very handy.

Not to go too off topic, but what display do you have? If you have a Samsung plasma, we can call each other "bros" !!! tongue.gif

If you hit display on the remote what audio track is the 790 playing. If you hit the audio button can you toggle through to the DTS MA track. I've found some BDs are authored incorrectly where the main menu selects the wrong audio track.

I'm seriously considering getting the S790 because I can't justify the $ for the Oppo and have a question or 2. 1st is why are some people using 2 HDMI cables? My setup is strictly 2D (I don't plan on getting a 3D TV) with my TV being a Sony KDL52XBR2 and AVR being an Onkyo 818, with this setup can I get away with using 1 HDMI cable? Does she run hot?

Thanks

Could be a few reasons. Two displays such as a projector and tv. Could be that their receiver doesn't pass 3d. Could be location.

But yes. If you're 2d only and the cable runs work, then no problem using a single HDMI cable.

No. Cold as ice. No fan.

It's still $199 at sony rewards.com !

Thanks for the info. I'm heading over there to order one up.

I went over there and found it to be $249. Maybe I'm in the wrong area.

And I could get hit by a car while crossing the street?

I have owned the S790 from Day-One.

As a Blu-Ray Player and Video Streamer from Commercial Services - it is the best there is.

All these people who want it to do a Million Other Things and find out it may or may not work
are experimenters.

You are funny but while that is true about the experimenters but I could possibly get a bad unit, who knows?

And Your Sony ES1000 Blu-Ray player could have been BAD but it wasn't.

You have to TRUST Someone?

There have been no NON-EXPERIMENTEL problems on this thread.

Hello HT Experts!
I just got my BDP-s790, and would like to connect it to the innernet. But my computer & its modem are in the next room. So I have a connection question:
How long can my lan cables be, between the cable modem & the s790 router, between the router and the s790, & the cable modem & my computer?
I don't want to go wireless....

TIA! Murf cool.gif

If you have a Wireless Router, why not? Elsewise, up to 100 feet would probably more than do you, in your location.

I don't have a router, wireless or other. So I want to go hard wired.
Up to 100ft from modem to s790 & also computer with the LAN wire, then. Looks like my 'Webstar' modem needs a splitter for the two runs. Any problem with that?

Maximum cable run/length for cat5/5e/6 is 328ft.

When you say "splitter", you mean "switch", right? You can't split ethernet. If your modem is also a router then a switch will work. But many modems aren't routers, so you'll have to get a router in that case. I'd recommend getting a router anyway since it will cost about the same as a good switch and give you far more functionality. As Inferno said, the length is ok.
