Official 2012 Sony BDP-S790 Thread - Page 76

I don' think my modem is a router too (Webstar from Cablevision; one co-ax in, one rj45 out, two rj11 outs, one USB for ?). So would a router go after the webstar, and have two outs from it (one for the computer & one for the s790)?
Sorry for my ignorance....frown.gif

Correct. It will look like this, where PC2 is your 790.

Maybe if you post the solution above in that thread, somebody will recompile it for you. From my previous experience with Netgear their customer service has been outstanding.

As you can see, its a really minor change.

Again, hope this helps.

I just want to thank Mark for actually going onto the Netgear forums and sharing the information.

I have a case open with Netgear and they will be taking a look.

To get around the issue at the moment I'm using TSMuxer and muxing to M2TS, the file then works.

Most of the issues that have come up are with DLNA, and in general thats a bag of nails .... not just for the 790, but for many other players, since there are many variables.

Servers, File types, codecs, networks, hardware performance, network performance, etc, etc, etc.

Thank you for your kind words, but your thanks should be directed over to the guys at sourceforge.net who actually patched the code.......

I'm just the herald of good news.

Hi

First sorry for my bad english.
I have buy today a Sony BDP-S790.

Test a Blu-ray Disc 3D movie and it played good, but then i test it with a USB stick and the screen will stutter on a MKV movie.
The MKV movie played good on PC, the problem is not the movie.

How can i fixed this ?

I sent an email to Sony Support regarding the MP4 problem and there response was a link to a compatibility [age for their Blue-Ray players as seen in the images below. MP4 is not supported over DLNA but is via USB.

Update to my issue: I downloaded a trial version of "Serviio" media streaming server software and installed it on my Media Smart (My version of Twonky and Media connect wont transcode and have been disabled), I'm now able to play the MP4's via DLNA.

How much does the transcoding affect the picture quality and is there better Media Streaming software out there?

Thanks for posting the chart. Unfortunately most of it is wrong. Probably just way out of date. Not your fault though.

Transcoding affects the quality quite a bit and taxes your server. I'd turn it off when possible.

Serviio is the best DLNA server for sony players. Just don't use the default profile. That will result in more incompatibility and transcoding than the Bravia 2012 profile.

Why would Sony send me an out of date link? In any case the 790 wouldn't play straight mp4 files from my server when using either Twonky or Meida connect. If I can find the transcoder settings I will try to disable it and see what happens from there.

I don't know, but the info in the player manual directly contradicts much of the info on that page, as does our direct experience. For example, sony players in the US won't do divx but will do most other video formats on that list.

I beg to Differ. If you look at the page in the manual the *2 denotes does not play file format on DLNA server.

Mp4 is tricky because its a format AND can be a container.

You do need to first figure out what the video and audio codec used for the file is ... and then you can go from there.

As an example the podcast HDNation from Revision 3 is a "mp4" file. The file is being served by "playback DLNA" for mac. It has no transcoding ability.

The S790 "sees" the file as a MP4 and can play it.

On closer examination of the file, the video codec used is AVC Mpeg4 and the audio is AAC.

So as mDaveJ points out above, the table Sony sent you is incorrect as the 790 can play AVC mpeg 4 video with AAC Audio (mp4) over DLNA without any trans-coding.

And yes, that table is so screwy. NO DTS on a M2TS over DLNA? What are they on. Of course that is supported. Not just DTS, but DTS Master Audio too.

Hahaha, Sony marketing are not talking to Sony engineering.

Sorry I was mixing "direct experience" and what's in the manual. The manual is also wrong in many cases because most of those files play just fine over DLNA. So to clarify, the manual contradicts the posted list for some files. Both the list and manual are wrong in the case of many other file types.

If anyone finds an accurate list, please post it. You could probably make one from the info in the serviio profile, but I'm not smart enough to do that myself.

Not sure if you are on a Mac or a PC, but if you are on a Mac, "Media Inspector" is very good. That the one I use above. I updated the post above with some more info that may help ... or not of course.

We're back to the old subject of DLNA "not working out the box" ..... a subject of much conversation on this thread I'm afraid. DLNA is great, once you've mastered it .... and understand limitations and implementations on server/player sides ... but it is a bit of a nightmare, and understand how consumers get frustrated.

I know enough about DLNA to get me in trouble but that's about it, I do however love finding, fixing while learning along the way. Thanks for info once again, I'm on a Mac but my server is HP Mediasmart, I'm going to find the inspector and check it out.

This is what I got from Conair 4 MP4, what could be the problem.

I went back and checked the BDP-S590 owners manual >>

For Note 2:

I guess Sony are edging their bets. "May not play".

Unfortunately I dont have a very big collection of mp4s to do lots of testing, but the only thing that is different from your file and my file is

yours:

Format profile : Main@L4.1

everything I seem to have is

Format profile : High@L3.0
or
Format profile : High@L3.1

So I'm not 100% certain if this could be a issue or not.

I can take a iTunes music video and play it fine in the S790. ITunes "mp4" music videos dont have any DRM. It seems that most iTunes music videos are just using the High@L3.0 profile.

I was looking at the Codec ID = mp42 which is different from yours, now the problem is how do I change this to a more compliant Codec?

You could try putting it in a MKV container instead. Use MKVmerge.

I did that last night and am now using wondershare to convert the MP4 that Handbrake generated with the mp42 codec ID to another MP4 with a Codec ID = isom. I will check both files later to see what the results are.

What profile did you use originally to create the file. I've used handbrake before, and if I select the Apple TV 3 profile, the resulting mp4 file plays perfectly on the S790 ... and actually, I think the picture looks better using the 790 than Apple TV 3, due to SBM and the Auto video setting I use.
