Bad assumption, unfortunately.
And the manual is wrong: the S790
will play media files via DLNA and the S790 is advertised as a DLNA Digital Media Renderer (DMR) so you can push content to the player (I have not tried this with JRiver). BUT....remember that MKV and AVI are simply "containers" and the codecs within must also be supported. If your media files meet spec for the S790
and your server has a Sony profile to deal with the S790's odd DLNA behavior then you are all set to go, otherwise you will need to a powerful enough media server to transcode your files (with loss of generational quality) for playback.
IMHO, buy the S790 for its exemplary Blu Ray and DVD disc playback---the picture is reference quality and the menus are snappy. If you are looking for a "universal" media player that will play
everything then I'd suggest a dedicated media player in addition to the S790. Or something like the Oppo Blu Ray players---although you can easily find a S790
and a dedicated media player for less than an Oppo.
