Official 2012 Sony BDP-S790 Thread - Page 80

Skyfall Blu-Ray wont play on Sony BDP-S790 - I just get the sound and no video output

I have checked and my software is up to date

All other Blu-Ray disks play OK and the DVD format plays too !!

Has anyone else had this problem ?

I have read that someone has the same problem with a Samsung so it looks like a disk problem

Regards

Simon

I played it last night without issue. The Fox java load screen appeared only briefly after a shortened sound intro but the disc/movie still loaded OK. Usually, things I try first with problem discs is turning off BD-Live, then I try clearing the Blu-Ray Disc memory of the player after trying to load/play the disc at least twice first.

Is there anything we can do to try and get this for the S790?

Was thinking about subscribing to HBO for their GO service. But if I can't use it on the S790 I don't know if I will.

Sony constantly add (and remove) online services to the "Bravia Internet video services" which the 790 uses. Its possible they may add it in the future ... you just won't know until it shows up.

Just recently I noticed the NHL app got a upgrade to support live games. They recently added AOL, Launchpad, Revision 3, etc ....

My ES1000 Blu-Ray died last week after 4 years frown.gif

I will miss it, it was a wonderful player!

It is time for a upgrade so I just placed an order for the S790 and I am excited to try it out on Friday! biggrin.gif

^^^^

It really is a great blu-ray player. The Sony streaming services are pretty great and the menu is very clean, snappy and responsive. I am still getting very minor quirks with the DLNA streaming, and every 10 movies or so I watch it locks up. But you will be very well served by this player.

I just hope this s790 lasts as long as my last Sony purchase (i.e., FOREVER!!!!!!smile.gif

I'm thinking about picking up one of these to allow me to stream .avi and .mkv files from my JRiver mediacenter server.

I've assumed this is not a problem at all but the user manual for the S790 says that .avi and .mkv files are compatible for playback with a footnote which reads: "The player does not play this file format on a DLNA server."

I am not interested in the player playing it on my Windows 8 JRiver mediacenter server....I am wanting to either use the player to pull .mkv files from my JRiver setup, or push .mkv files from JRiver (not sure if the S790 is a DLNA renderer).

I think this is just bad translation in the user manual but can someone let me know if I can stream .mkv files without issue to the S790 either by pulling or - even more preferably in my case - by using the 790 as a DLNA renderer and pushing the files to the 790?

Thanks,

Dave M

One follow up question:

Is there any advantage in the scaling the S790 will give to lower resolution files than, say the S390 or S590?

Thanks,

Bad assumption, unfortunately.

And the manual is wrong: the S790 will play media files via DLNA and the S790 is advertised as a DLNA Digital Media Renderer (DMR) so you can push content to the player (I have not tried this with JRiver). BUT....remember that MKV and AVI are simply "containers" and the codecs within must also be supported. If your media files meet spec for the S790 and your server has a Sony profile to deal with the S790's odd DLNA behavior then you are all set to go, otherwise you will need to a powerful enough media server to transcode your files (with loss of generational quality) for playback.

IMHO, buy the S790 for its exemplary Blu Ray and DVD disc playback---the picture is reference quality and the menus are snappy. If you are looking for a "universal" media player that will play everything then I'd suggest a dedicated media player in addition to the S790. Or something like the Oppo Blu Ray players---although you can easily find a S790 and a dedicated media player for less than an Oppo.

I posted this in the S590/S390 forum, but its applicable here too;

DLNA support:

Sony will play the following formats NATIVELY over DLNA. In some instances the DLNA server may need special configuration or a profile to present the files to the Sony BDP in a way that it is able to properly understand.

Video:

Container: MKV. Video Codec: AVC Mpeg4/H264. Audio Codec: DTS/Dolby Digital/DTS-MA. (Note: No VC-1 or Mpeg2 video support or no TrueHD support)

Container: M2TS Video Codec: AVC Mpeg4/H264, VC-1, Mpeg2. Audio Codec: DTS/Dolby Digital/DTS-MA (Note: This is the best container to use for Sony BDPs and provides support for the most codecs)

Container: VOB Video codec:Mpeg 2. Audio codec: LPCM, Dolby Digital (Note: this seems to be one of the few containers that supports LPCM!)

Container: m4v mp4 Video Codec: AVC Mpeg4/H264, XVID. Audio Codec: AAC (Note: Mp4/M4v is still problematic though. I have experienced audio sync problems in some instances).

Audio:

Mp3, AAC, Wma

... and for our friends outside the US, you can add DIVX to that list.

The S790 arrived! It is such a very nice player! The lights on the top is pretty cool

The first thing I did was pop in the Avril concert DVD and I have to say WOW! Avril's face is clear and detailed, I noticed her red eyeshadow, I do not think I noticed that on my old 1000ES player! eek.gifbiggrin.gif

Here is 2 pictures

I have not popped in the blu-ray disc but I am going to do that soon

So far I am loving the S790 and I think it is much better than my old 1000ES!

What's wrong with this picture? (Well, actually Audio.)
Start playing the Total Recall Extended Director's Cut Blu-ray on my BDP-S790, setup for Bitstream playback audio - constant Audio dropouts - had to switch to PCM to avoid missing my periodic sound losses.

Tests completed: Sony BDP-S5000ES plays Bitstream without Audio Dropouts, before and after the FW update. (24 to 26)
Only problem on the 5000 was trying to play the Extended Version. Had to go to Scene Selection to change.
Will have to try the other Blu-rays that wouldn't play Bitstream.

How come the old Sony 5000 plays Total Recall, with no audio issues for Bitstream, but the 790 can't?

Everybody has problems with Total Recall. Not sure why your old player can play it.

Just picked up a 790 in hope of curing my audio delay issue. I had a 590 and the sound is delayed when going through my yamaha RX-A820 to my Samsung UN65ES8000. The yamaha has a lip sync option, but it is further delay, which would make it worse. I am hoping if I separate the audio and video it will cure my problem.

The problem goes away if I send the sound and video directly to the TV.
