I like those apw. there are so many of these thumbs out its difficult to choose. and how big do you need of a thumb drive? is 8gb enough? decisions decisions... rolleyes.gif

however i have these

http://www.staples.com/SanDisk-Cruzer-Facet-8GB-USB-20-USB-Flash-Drive-Orange/product_105553

and i can verify these work just great on the 790 and the 5100

$8.00 for 8gb

shows OOS online there (could be just that color) but just this thursday I picked up two of these to replace the spinning drive (Lacie) i had on the 790 and to get an additional one for the 5100.

Does anybody have a recommendation for a better way to type in the texts without using the remote??? A wired/wireless keyboard, or maybe a sony app for smart phones???

You answered you're own question. Yes, to both you're answers .. although wireless keyboard may be tough.

Sony's Mediaremote for iOS and Android supports keyboard entry for everything other than VUDU and Netflix.

Wired keyboard supports all text entry (even Netflix and VUDU).

i use my motorola xoom tablet to enter text.

Thank you for a quick reply.

I read it somewhere that one could use a wired keyboard. Haven't tried it yet. But I much prefer the wireless one, so that I can do the text from the sofa a few yards away. But I have to try Sony mediaremote for iOS. Wish they make it work with Netflix 'cause its my major streaming site.

I assume you use the same Sony app mentioned above?
The wired works fine, I will try my wireless after work today.
I should also mentioned tv sideview app also supports keyboard entry.

Hello everyone, I have read every line of all 82 pages. Wow, what a thread.

Based on your comments, thoughts and results I purchased the S790.
I am truly pleased with this product.

I do have two issues that I will toss out there in hope that one or two of the experienced end users here can offer a solution.

First, I am connecting to a Denon AVR 3806 and a Mitsubishi DLP. I split the signal using HDMI 1 to the DLP and HDMI 2 to the Denon.
The sound and picture are fantastic (Blu Ray, DVD etc...) however, while playing SACD I only get a stereo (2CH) signal. I have attempted many different setups but just can't make it happen.
(My Denon 3910 plays SACD well so no emergency there) but I would like to have a backup in place.

My second issue is with DLNA. While my S790 streams well with netflix, pandora, etc... using my wireless router connection through verizon FIOS, I can't seem to get a connection using Sony's homestream software which seems identical to serviio. (I tried serviio as well, no luck) I would really like to be able to play files from my computer over my Home Theater system.
To be honest, I am rather new to the digital streaming method and am trying to learn on the fly!

Thanks for any help that comes my way. You guys are a wealth of information.

Just as an FYI to everyone -- I pulled the USB drive out of my player this morning, and the problems I'd been having (primarily failure to connect to Netflix and incredibly long load times on some discs) seem to have vanished completely. The new drive should be arriving today, so we'll see what happens when I plug that one in.

I was reading in blu-ray.com forum yesterday, where S790 will output 24 hz for film-based DVD. Is this correct or is this simply a Sony Marketing ploy?

If it will output 24 hz, what player configuration is required for this?

This worked well. Thanks for the information.

I had player set for "Original Resolution" for BD, but had to change it to "Auto" for DVD so it would up-scale to 1080/24p. Depending on media quality, BD look better on my system when playing direct from disk.

Reckon I'll have to change it for each media type, though.

Why did you set it to original resolution for BD? Not sure I see the point, when most BD is 1080p - right ?

Under Music settings, select SACD playback channel = DSD Multi

2nd setting depends on if the AVR 3806 supports a DSD signal over HDMI. If it does, then under audio settings set DSD output mode to ON. If it doesnt support DSD native, then set it to OFF. The S790 will then pass multi channel PCM over HDMI to the 3806.

As far as not seeing Serviio or Homestream, in the Serviio/Homestream server console, do you actually see the Sony S790 appear, shown as Bluray disc player. Is it on the same sub-net ?

In addition, set the AV Separation Output Mode to ON. I had a similar problem and talked with Sony, which was really useless as the person I talked to did not seem to understand what DSD was. I have HDMI 1 connected to the TV and HDMI 2 connected to the receiver. While I was on the phone I realized that I had the TV on. Turning off the TV resulted in magic - the receiver recognized the input as DSD. Turning on the separation mode allowed the receiver to recognize DSD with the TV on. HDMI will use the highest quality signal that all connected devices support. Since the TV does not support DSD, PCM was used.

Because I don't trust "Auto" setting to sort it correctly. At the very least, I'll be assured of a direct connection between disk and display with "Original Resolution" and display set to "1080P Pure Direct".

Thanks for getting back so fast! I will be working on these issues this weekend and I have some options thanks to you.
As far as the "Serviio" homestream, all I see is "Unknown Device" with a yellow dot. Apparently it is not recognizing the S790.
As I stated, I am new to home streaming and I am not sure that Serviio has a lot of setup options. Kind of reminds me of handshake issues with HDMI.

The more I use this player the more I realize how good it really is. I'm listening to Dire Straits "Brothers in Arm's" SACD right now and the audio quality is excellent!

I went home and did a reset on my router.
Patience paid off in that I now see the Sony Blu Ray player under device name and profile with a friendly green light! (Homestream/Serviio)

However, when I fire up the sony, there is no sign of the PC in the sony menu. It seems that the player is not cooperating.
The menu does show the USB stick that I have in the rear of the unit but nothing as far as the PC goes.

Force the player to find the server. Goto network settings and under connected DLNA servers hit options to find DLNA servers.

You can also hide/delete unwanted ones from this menu item.

I tried a logitech wireless keyboard and it didn't work, the player puts up the message "Unsupported USB Device". Oh well

Hmmm.... can't find anything under servers.
Nothing is popping up on the menu to connect to. Strange

Hi InfernoST, I'm using the Logitech wireless keyboard MK320 plugged into the front USB port (has the message "USB Device Front Unknown"). And it works on Amazon, Netflix, YouTube, Facebook, Video & Music Unlimited. The only app it wouldn"t work on is Vudu.
... K400 (K400r) also works. Touchpad works in browser only.
