This player has a dual-core processor in it. How much "snappier" does it make it as far as the menus, Netflix, Amazon VOD apps, etc. over the Sony 5100? I currently have a Panasonic BDT-310 that just seems so sluggish trying to navigate through the Apps. I was considering getting the 5100 or S790 in hopes these would have faster navigation through the apps.

I THINK the answer is NONE.

It is for 4K upscaling.

But i have never thought the s790 was sluggish.

That's not the case. I've done extensive testing and can definitely confirm there is a difference. The difference concerns navigation of the XMB. If for example you are scrolling through a long list of files you have shared via DLNA and equally has long file names ... The s790 is way faster at scrolling over the 5100.

I've also found the new youtube app , menu navigation faster too.

We cannot compare with PS3. There is difference in youtube between BDP-S790 vs PS3. PS3 youtube back ground is very rich and scrolling also fast. I did test enough movies from DLNA and I saw PS3 performs better than this player. But one area I see this player performing well is audio. Its way better than other bluray players like older sony and samsung and considerably better than ps3. Its worst in playing photos from DLNA. It cant play music and slide show at the same time. You have BGM option from CD or USB, but limited to one file. That means you have 1 hour photo slide show from DLNA hard drive and you register music file under BGM it is going to play that song again and agian and agian. As far as concern to picture quality I didnt see much difference between PS3 and this player.

Thanks for all the feedback. Much appreciated.

Ps3 performs better than this player for video DLNA? Are you kidding me. The Ps3 is a disaster for DNLA with video. It has such a limited support for file and codec compatibility it just isn't worth the time and effort.

Incidentally, the comparisons above in terms of performance are between the BDP-S5100 and BDP-S790. The OP was not asking about PS3.

Sony BDP-S790 Audio much improved with last FW Update.
Well, that new update may have solved some issues (like DVD movies stuttering or freezing), but just like updates from Microsoft, it seems to have caused new issues. I tried playing my pristine store bought copy of World War Z a second time last night. When I originally got the movie, before the update, it played just fine. But this time, after the update:

The previews would get stuck at the start, when the screen was black. Would not start to play, unless I pressed FF.

When it would finally get to the main menu, it would stutter for a moment, then play the audio, then the bottom menu would appear - but no background video above the menu bar. Just a blank screen. All the menu options would pop-up when selected, but no background video.

Starting the movie, again it would stay on the black screen until I pressed FF, then play.

If I jumped a chapter forward or back, or used the 10 second quick rewind, it would lockup. Only thing that would work was the eject button.

Same with trying to watch the extra bonus features.

Got quite frustrating!

This hasn't happened when playing NetFlix rentals of Olympus Has Fallen or White House Down. And again, those were NetFlix BD rental copies.

Will break open my copy and give it a whirl.

First Turn On: Black for about 45 seconds then Previews start - go to the Movie start, then shut down.
Second Turn On: Black for 30 seconds, different set of Previews - go to the Movie start then shutdown.
Third Turn On: Black for 20 seconds then back to the initial Previews. No issues.
Suggestion: Spray Windex on disk, wipe dry with toilet tissue from the Inside to the Outer Rim. Do NOT dry in circular motion!

Strange to need to do that to a brand new store bought disc, yet NetFlix rentals work just fine. Perhaps I should try to play the disc with the network cable unplugged? If the previews keep changing, it might be downloading stuff causing the issues.

Brand New, right out of the Package - DVDs don't work - clean with Windex, and away they go. Disks pick up different types of oily residues sometimes during the manufacturing processes. Don't forget, Brand Names may get the product produced by the cheapest quote!

Since no one responded here I chatted with Sony Support and they said the Netflix Ap for this player does not support Netflix 3D streams. Disappointed since their PS3 Netflix Ap does support 3D streams.

A firmware update might do it. But whether Sony will do so is another matter.

Sony S790 over color saturation

I recently bought the Sony S790 Bluray player to replace my S770 (the S770 is now connected to an older rear projection TV via component). I noticed immediately when I played several Bluray discs that the colors seem to be over saturated as compared to my S770. I've also noticed that there tends to be a slight reddish shift to the colors. Does anyone know what may be causing this?

Cheers.

There should be a red Netflix button on the bottom of your remote. Try using that and see if it brings you there. You shouldn't need to download it...it should already be there.

No, there is 2 type of remote and i have the one which doesn't have Netflix button.

The apps are specified for each country. In France, we doesn't have "official" Netflix for different causes.

But it is possible to connect Netflix with a false US email address, and with modifying DNS in the modem to make think to Netflix that i am in US (it works very well with Apple TV, where when you change your region in the settings, it change the app on the screen.)

But on the Sony BDP-S790, it is impossible to specify the region (i think).

If anyone knows how to make my Blu Ray thinking that i'm in the US, please let me know !

Sony provisions the firmware and apps on your bluray player by the players unique serial number. You can't defeat this through DNS or proxy.

And do you think it would be possible to inject an US firmware ?

Where would il  get it and how do i inject it ?

Is it reversible ?

No. Not possible.

Hello,

Can BDP-S790 output BluRay video via HDMI to the TV and audio via RCA Line Out to a stereo amplifier at the same time?

If not, is there a BluRay player with 3D capability that can do that?

My amplifier has no HDMI input nor any other digital inputs.

Cheers

You need to upgrade your receiver.

Welcome to AVS. As long a s a player has RCA outs, they all will. And yes, the Sony S790 does output over RCA.

The BDPS790 can output via Stereo RCA, Digital RCA Coax and even Optical. The last couple aren't supported by a lot of newer units.
I'd be surprised if your old receiver didn't have some sort of digital input... then it's REALLY old.

And Really has to be replaced if he wants to playback DTS! (Check carefully for an Optical Input.)

Hi guys. I recently got the Disney Wow disc and was wanting to run the Pixel Flipper for an extended amount of time but can't figure out how to do it with my S790. If I leave the screen saver on then the saver starts after like 12 minutes or something. If I disable screen saver then the S790 just turns off completely after like 20 minutes or something. Any advice?

Also, has anyone been able to compare the s790 to the PS4 blu-ray player or has there been any comparative reviews written? Thanks.
Sony s790 converts 21:9 aspect ratio movies to 16:9 aspect, eliminating those annoying black bands crowding the scenes as Samsung players does? If yes, this is by croping or by tensioned?

Hello,

I just purchased a Sony BDS790 and was having a problem with playing mp4 video files using the USB ports. The movies appear stretched vertically when I watch a movie from a flash drive. Blu-Rays and streaming from NetFlix arrears to be correct. When I insert the flash stick into my TV or Roku box the movie plays correctly, with black bars on top and bottom but on the BDS790 there are no bars and the picture is stretched vertically. Is this a known problem? I tried changing many options in the menu but had no luck resolving the issue. Is there a solution?

Thanks

ive been watching this thread and the deals threads on avs to see if this player will come down in price. Anyone know when this could be expected for this unit or if theres a secret society or store i can get it from for less now?

I need the HDMI and analog connects for both audio and video to pass to zone 2 from my receiver.
