Joe, Do you still have your Oppo 83? I have the 83 se and thinking about selling for replacement of s 790.

The last two features that sell Oppo Analog, and DVD A. Oppo has been lacking in performance as well when compared to other players that cost less, i.e blu ray playback issues. Why pay more? I have 83 and the 95. Streaming is the future and has improved within the last year. Streaming is not as good as Blu ray but is getting there. Did you compared 93 to S790?

I got my Sony yesterday and while it is nice I'm not sure I notice a difference between my Panasonic 310 and the Sony. It's not that easy to do an A/B test and the picture looks outstanding on both players. I feed one HDMI output to my Sony 4K projector and the other to my Anthem D2. This is the exact same way I used the Panasonic.

I'm not crazy about the Sony interface(I have a Sony TV with the same interface) but that not a big deal. The size and build quality are very similar to my Panasonic 310.

I'll have to do some further comparisons as my Video memory is not that great when I can't see the same images in rapid succession or side by side. All I've done so far is watch one Blu-ray movie and looked at a few VUDU 2 minute previews.

Have you been able to tell any difference between sending the Sony1000 projector an upconverted 4K source from the 790, or sending 1080p from the 790 and letting the pj do the upconversion to 4K?

I think blu-ray playback issues are hit and miss on most players since we all don't view the same content. Amongst all the blu-ray transports that I own and have owned over the past 4 years (Oppo, Pioneer, Panasonic and Sony) I have had one playback issue and it was with the Pioneer, which was fixed later in a firmware update. Other forum members owning the same transports may experience more playback issues due to the content they are viewing. No transport in 2012 should be experiencing playback issues regardless of the content we are viewing, but they do and this is not exclusive to the Oppo. Maybe the studios need to stop tinkering with the format. The mighty PS3 has been known to have an occasional playback issue.

All manufacturers' firmware release notes all mention some type of improvement in disc playback as a rule of thumb. Some blu-ray discs are still being released with the opening disclosure that a firmware update may be necessary to play a specific disc and in some instances there are variations of the same disc being released.



Paying more is an individual decision and only the individual can decide if the price delta is worth it between product A and B. Build quality is important to me and I would be willing to pay more for that. Panasonic's soon to be released DMP-BDT500 has 7.1 analog support plays FLAC, but doesn't support SACD or DVD-A which are important to me and I would be willing to pay a more for that. The Sony BDP-S790 plays SACD, but doesn't support FLAC, DVD-A or support 7.1 analog which are important to me and I would be willing to pay more for that. In addition, the build quality of the Sony would be unacceptable for me if I was considering it for my home theater setup, but for its intended purpose I can live without these features and the Sony's price reflects the lack of these features in my opinion. Most speak of the price delta between the Oppo and transports in the $150.00 - $250.00 range and want to limit the conversation to blu-ray, DVD and streaming, which is a disingenuous comparison since the Oppo does considerably more than just blu-ray, DVD and streaming. I see no one asking if the Krell Evolution 555 ($15,000) or Goldman Eidos 20BD ($16,900) are worth 30 times the cost of the BDP-93. It is probably not, but if a prospective buyer finds value in these price differences then it is worth it. If ones main purchasing considerations are blu-ray, DVD and streaming, then you need not spend more than $200.00 in my opinion, but others may find this in spending $500.00. If there is a transport that is built comparable to the Oppo and does SACD, DVD-A, FLAC and supports 7.1 analog and does it for $250.00 - $350.00 then I will buy it. The Oppo doesn't come a la carte. It is all or nothing.



Streaming may be the future, but it is presently not in my future. However, if my needs were to change then maybe at that time Oppo would have improved it streaming partners; revisit offerings from Sony and Panasonic or I would look for a dedicated streaming solution. I will be the 1st to tell someone that if streaming is very important to you then you will not be happy with what the Oppo offers and this has been voiced on their owner threads.



I will not be not be comparing the 93 to the S790 since they are not in competition and any differences I may observe in PQ would be purely subjective. I only considered the Sony as a need arose for streaming (wife) and people were talking about returning their 93s for this Sony model. Then curiosity got the best of me as I was considering a Panasonic for its streaming partners. I normally purchase with specific requirements in mind. I think the PQ of the Sony is quite good and I would have no problem watching it if the need arose, but I do feel that Sony manipulates the picture somewhat and this was the reason I got rid of my BDP-S1000ES.

That would be a good move.

Have you tried 3D or Netflix yet? I have the 310 and the 790 is better all around.

The fact is if they are already discussing the 790 (in the oppo threads) then oppo better be announcing something new pretty soon.

I have an Oppo 83 and really have no interest in 3d (the only reason I might want to replace it with something newer, e.g, the Sony790). I send 1080p from it to my Sony VW1000 4K projector, which upconverts it to 4K. I don't do any net streaming, just use BD's.

Is there any advantage for me to replace the Oppo with the new Sony? My inclination is to wait until there are 4K BluRay players, presumably by the end of this yr or next.

Since you've invested in the projector why not wait for a 4K player. This way you feed your projector nothing but the best.

This is certainly my inclination; just interested to hear if there were any substantive reasons not to do so.

I see 4K projector in my future, but I don't plan on being an early adopter and a year or so from now there will be more offerings that are priced more consumer friendly hopefully. I've learned my lesson about being an early adopter.

How are you comparing to see that it is better? I haven't tried 3D yet but I've looked at Netflix a bit. Netflix has a large variance in quality depending on what you choose to watch. For me it is hard to compare as I have no way to quickly switch back and forth betweem players.

Some 3D content is available on video unlimited.

PQ of the Panasonic 310 is as good as it gets, but I returned my unit due to its crappy DLNA performance. It simply did not work with MKV files, no matter what DLNA server and settings I tried.

Now I need another player with 2 HDMi sockets and -hopefully- with excellent DLNA performance.
Will the BDP-S790 be that player?

It's just another app in the video list. However you need to register for this service (along with music unlimited). This registration is different to the Bravia Internet video registration process.

Yes they are full length movies, not clips.

I get NO AUDIO - I do get 3D Video.

FYI - I am using Audio #2 out for Audio. My AVR does not support 3D.

You can also get it from J&R or ABT. I purchased from ABT and received it in 4 business days (Illinois to Georgia).

And for the record I was an original Beta Tester for the 83 and did some work on the 93 for them. I do like Oppo but I just call them like I see them...

Oh and for he record I have received about 30 emails/PMs from others asking about the oppo versus the 790...

As you can tell that after your posted on PQ, I consider it pointless to reply. This will be my final replied to you. It will be difficult to discuss PQ with you.

For me, the price and performance are what made me posted. This is a hobby for me, so I can call it as I have seen it. FYI, some of my posts in the Oppo's thread have been deleted anyway for posting technical facts about the Oppo.

Oppo vs. spending less for same blu ray PQ, performance?, SACD, playback blu?, better streaming...... Why spend extra? "build quality"

I would like to hear your subjective opinion and want to know if Sony manipulated the S790 PQ
