Someone already mentioned the Netflix UI will be upgraded. Another feature that sets this apart from the 780 is the built-in dual core processor which Sony claims is for "fast performance". What does this actually mean for the 790?

What's critical for me is continued SA-CD support at the same PCM conversion rate as 770 and 780 (176.4 kHz/24 bit).

If not, then I'll keep my 770.

Noooo ... and I called the nice folks at Sony to see what the deal was. It turns out that the April 17th estimated shipping date is going to be pretty accurate.

The order status estimated ship date is likely incorrect.

Still, only a week and a bit before the 17th ;-)

I think we'll also see the esupport page go up for the S790 before it ships. Likely around the 16th or something. They need that in place, should folks need to download the original firmware for whatever reason.

I currently own a S590 which I think is excellent, but I am interested in the S790 and I want to be able to answer the question, is it worth paying the extra for the S790? Does it offer anything above & beyond what the S590 offers for the "regular user". When I say regular user, I mean doesn't have a nice Sony VPL VW1000ES 4K projector ;-)

Of course it's not clear yet where or not it offers anything 'above and beyond' for someone with a VW1000, for the info one has been receiving says that the 1000 upconverts 1080p to 4K better than this BD player does. So VW1000 owners may need to wait until there are 4K BD's themselves, and a player that plays them, for any improvement.

Very true. I do like the Super Bit Mapping though which offers superior image Q.

Ship date looks like its moved to the 19th April now.

Please give some updated impressions once it's received. The "dual-core" processor has me intrigued. Currently have the Oppo-BDP93, but their horrendous apps (especially no ETA on a Netflix update, and the existing one being INCREDIBLY SLOW) have me looking to trade it in on a cheaper model. At $250, the 790 looks like a steal compared to the Oppo anyhow, and since I don't use the extra features of that player really, a "down-grade" that actually performs well (with nice apps) would be a nice change.

+1 IMO (one of the main reasons I own a 1000ES and an S780).

One major difference I found between Oppo 93 and my Sony S590 is the sound coming out of coaxial. I use a outboard DAC, and the Oppo does have better SQ in that respect (to those who that matters). And can't beat the Sony app. options.

There's now one review on the Sony Style page for S790. How the heck does this person own this player when it hasn't been released yet? According to the Sony Style page, it will be available on 4/19/12

Hmm. Still seems to be showing when I just checked. Also saw that the availability date went back to the 17th !!

This waiting game is killing me! I want to get this player bad and I've held back at ordering it through Sony Style in hopes that Best Buy or Amazon start selling it before Sony Style just like it happened with the S590 which was first available through Best Buy.

The 590 was first available through Sony rewards. Then the Sony online store shortly after. At least 1-2 weeks before BB.

Got an email today from the Sony store apologizing for the delay in shipping out the S790. They indicated it would now ship on the 16th, with courtesy next day shipping.

Yea, funny, I just came here to let folks know J&R had them in stock. Good to know a few others have placed orders :-)

I was promised mine before Easter and since they let me down JR gets the order. I told them exactly that. Plus I save almost 30 this way. No tax and cheaper shipping!

I recently downloaded the user guide for the S790 and noticed two adjustments of interest on page 25 under "Video Settings". Those are "Texture Remaster" and "Clear Black".

Whoever is planning to test this player, could you please have a go at these adjustments and see how effective they are. BTW, I'm fanatical of deep, dark and rich blacks so the latter adjustment might be of extreme interest.
