Is anyone saying beaver's jpeg low settings (or any site that uses jpegs) should not be taken into account here? It's the conspiracy claim that beaver is responsible for the way stronger then slight dnr that is in dispute.

Doubters can believe there will be Universal version caps that will have vastly improved pq with tons of film grain if they want, but it is highly unlikely.

The SC disc looks more noisy than grainy to my eye. Both look half-assed.

I wouldn't say that it's noise so much that it looks like an old master. And Universal just decided, as they often do, to push out an old master with a slick new coat of DNR, with an added bonus of contrast boosting.

Given the choice between the two, I'll take the unmolested version of the old master. Similar to how an HD cable version of Back to the Future looked significantly better than what was released on BD.

On Beaver's new review of The Last Temptation of Christ there is a disclaimer that addresses recent questions they've received about their screencap capture method, to which they claim they've utilized the same capture method for roughly three years, so, assuming that's completely accurate/honest, it would in fact appear Universal's Deer Hunter is DNR'd to hell. Fair enough.

I'm amazed they tampered with this. I assumed Univeral were grudgingly releasing a "Blu-Ray version of Deerhunter" strictly out of duty and were not going to spend one cent more than they had to in getting it out. But no, they had to **** with the picture !

Do you think the techs at Universal know that they have let everyone down so much by simply going to work?

Like do you think they look at "Spartacus" and feel that there is a massive delta between it and say, any eight dollar Warner disc?

Yeah I know mike, I know the other EE and DNR'd botch jobs - what I mean is I get the impression Cimino is still not the most loved director in movie land and usually his movies are just thrown out as seen. Universal already had a good enough print they could have simply ported over from the HD-DVD release, they don't usually like spending one cent more than they have to with Cimino movies so what made them sign off on a DNR budget sheet before getting Deerhunter out ?

Heh. I'd say that a DNR pass is standard operating procedure for a Universal catalogue title on Blu, doesn't matter who made the movie. They gots to make it look BETTER!

I'd love to see some comparisons with the HD DVD though, hopefully capsaholic will get something soon.

Universal make crap catalogue discs unless the director is involved, even then it's still not a given.

I agree with you, the SC disc does look noisier and shows signs of EE too. It's not natural grain, in other words. I've just done an A/B comparison (my review copy from Universal came in yesterday) and overall I think the Universal transfer is superior. The colors and brightness seem more natural. There is some DNR but not enough to ruin it. It's not perfect, but it's definitely not a botch job either.

Do you still have your player? I got the HD DVD from Amazon Marketplace for about $5 last year and I thought it looked beautiful. I'm sure there are still some copies floating around on the cheap.

I haven't seen either BD but if what you guys are saying is true then that's a shame. It has every right to shine on Blu.

My copy arrived yesterday, there seems to be far more blue in the image than I recall from previous releases, contrast is a lot higher than before.

They need to just lay off the DNR button. I think the underlying transfer was probably better than what StudioCanal used. They couldn't stay away from the DNR button though and it looks worse than it should.

I "collected" the HD-DVD but have never gotten around to watching it. I once met the young lady who played the prostitute as she married a friend of a musician I worked with. She was always embarrassed if you brought up the movie so we had a good time kidding her about it.

I just watched some of the Optimum/SC BD I got from amazon.co.uk. It's the same VC1 encode as the HD-DVD (I have that also). They both look fine to me. I didn't see any exaggerated grain or EE. I couldn't find my DVD to compare, I must have given it away.

It's not the same encode. The US Universal HD DVD encode is slightly superior, but it's very slight.

It's very close. Too close to remember by switching inputs. Why is the HD-DVD better?

There's much more grain in the HD-DVD, could be truer to the theatrical look than the Blu-Ray. The Blu-Ray is a lot cleaner.

Which BD are you talking about? The Optimum/Studio Canal BD has plenty of grain, enough where someone above thought it to be exaggerated by EE. I was comparing the HD-DVD and Optimium/SC BD. I don't have the new US BD, and I don't intend on buying it.
