Featuring the Rocker Turned Buffoon, Steven Tyler

They must really be getting desperate to find singers this year. Reports indicate that they are putting through a lot of kids barely older than the age requirement. I wonder if they lowered the minimum age again.

Yeah well there's nowhere to go but down after last year's champ, Scotty McCreery. We've been to the mountain top.
I hope there's a lot of young kids so we can see some more X Factor-esque freakouts when they get booted.

Hopefully there will be another rocker this season.

Vote for the worst has all the contestants already that are in the top 20 on their web site. I refused to look as it would ruin the first episodes of the show for me.

It's already known who made the final 20? Lame.

You know, for as much as I disliked Durbin last season, his freshman album is actually pretty good ...

The Vote for the Worst list should really help ratings ..

I didn't see any such list, just a couple names for the top 42. What is your source on that?

Their web site states the top 20 are already available. Would have to dig through their posts again but I want to avoid it as I already saw one of the top 20 (but didn't listen to the video).

Why are they referring to "top 42" if they already know the top 20? Nowhere on their site did I see a top 20 listed, not in their news, not on their blog, and not on their forum.

How do they already know the 42 or 20? Is FOX leaking all of this?

One of the singers they are naming was previously on another talent show. From what I could see they only have 2 or 3 names.

I believe they piece it together from people that are on the show, posting updates, people in the audience, people working for the show, etc.

That list, if accurate, really demonstrates how weak the overall field of singers is. All those singers who were previously rejected being put through again--at least 12 out of the 42, and there were probably a lot more who just aren't identified as having auditioned. That list has the singer who was on the other show, but it doesn't id the singer as such-later info I guess.

If I had any doubts about whether I would watch Idol this year, they were put to rest by this underwhelming "gamechangers" list. I wasted how many hours watching this show?
Am I seeing things, or was there a bunch of past rejects of Idol and other singing shows in the opening montage of show 1?
I love that this back, considering how much X-Factor sucked. Sure the episode tonight was severely lacking in "funny audition" department, but it was made up for by great singers, who sound good in DD 5.1 (not drowned out like on X-Factor), and even if most weren't good (but they were), the last guy with his cover of Thriller was UNREAL.

Here he is doing that cover on Youtube:

But watch it on AI.

Call me picky, but the very 1st singer has no chance of winning and neither does the girl who lives in a tent. I wouldn't of sent them through.
It's nice seeing people just standing and singing without the director doing a million cuts to family members, audience members, judges etc etc etc. Reminded me of how awful X Factor was, and how much I wish The Voice would lose the stupid cutting-to-the-family-members crap during the auditions.

Nice start to the season. Steven Tyler was such an excellent addition, his lines cracked me up last night.

That's strange-Idol used to cut away to the families standing outside the door and show closeups of the judges' reactions. They must have changed the show. Do they now let them sing the entire song too? I might have to watch this show with all of these changes!

They still did that.

A horrific drop for the premiere of American Idol. Down 27%, dropping from a 9.8 to a 7.2 in 18-49. Ratings sure to drop even more once The Voice starts up again. It'll still be the number one show this week, but without changes it looks like this might be the last year it will be number 1.

Last year with the cast change there was some buzz which of course is gone this year. I don't see The Voice dropping their ratings to any degree. I simply think people have got tired of their auditioning acts... contestant's stunts, contestants who can't sing with a few who can thrown in. Not to mention if you don't buy Steven's act it's pretty much unwatchable. The true ratings test will come once they hit the stage.

Update: Fox had Nielsen do a rush job on the final national ratings and American Idol was adjusted up to a 7.4 adults 18-49 rating, which was down 24% vs. the 9.8 rating for last Wednesday's premiere, and 21.9 million viewers.

(Everything else was down too.)

Fox, in total panic mode, had Nielsen do an "adjustment" of the numbers, making the "final" number 7.4, still down an alarming 24%. Normally any adjustments aren't revealed until the afternoon.
