'American Idol' Season 11 on FOX HD - Page 18

Lauren...yeah that's her name. The thing that sets Skylar apart from her is that she doesn't come off as naive and uptight as Lauren did. Hopefully Raelynn is taking notes. Both of Skylar's songs are examples of how you turn a song country. I understand Gaga herself did that version, but Skylar's version was far more believable to me. I would be surprised to see Raelynn have a career in country music. I'd be surprised if Skylar didn't.

The Worst

Colton Dixon - Every week he comes with new ways of transforming songs I like into things I can barely recognize.

The OK

Phillip Phillips - Every time he sings it sounds like he is angry. At certain times it is OK, but other times it makes absolutely no sense at all. I thought he was good during the User song, but was out of place in the second song.

Hollie Cavanagh - She was pretty good doing the Adele song, but the second song was weak.

Elise Testone - It would be more interesting if she had done the songs Colton did.

The Good

Joshua Ledet, Jessica Sanchez, and Skylar Laine. Jessica's first song was better than any single performance of the night.

Again, we totally agree on this one.

From the Probably Means Nothing At All But It Still Interests Me department:

Jessica has the worst overall listener review ratings from last night on iTunes, and 2nd fewest number of people bothering to rate her songs. Joshua has the fewest number of ratings, but his overall rating average is slightly higher than Jessica. With nearly just as few votes comes Elise, but her average score is higher than Joshua and Jessica. Skylar's average score is pretty low and she also didn't get many people even bothering to rate her, but she's above the other 3.

Phillip's Usher cover is far and away the highest rated and has the most ratings. Overall between both songs he's clearly getting the most love on iTunes. His 2nd song received less than half the reviews of the Usher track but that song still received more ratings than any other singer's best song. Far behind, but in second place, is Colton. Slightly behind Colton is Hollie.

I don't understand why Nigel and Co would put the oldie songs second. We have seen over and over that most of the young singers do not perform nearly as well when they aren't familiar with the songs. While there were no trainwrecks, most were much better on the newer songs that they know. Seems to me that it would have been a much better way to end the long show with the singers singing their better songs.

Anyways, I thought Skylar and Phillip had decent nights, and Colton had one of his weakest nights.

Not a lot of love for Colton around here, that's understandable. But if I had to pick one singer in the bunch who will almost surely have a career in pop music, it would be him. What he did with that 2nd song was turn it into a very contemporary Hot AC song. He really understands the current musical language; you may not like it, and it may be cynical to say, but the guy knows himself and his audience. The radio group I work for will be playing his s**t.

I will give him credit. He struck out swinging last night. But that's still 0 for 2.

Clearly, I do not know "a very contemporary Hot AC song " when I hear one. Are you familiar with the original?

Sometimes you get what you want. GOOD RIDDANCE COLTON!

I'm so happy that Elise is still around. She's really beautiful, but she needs to pick better songs. Much more enjoyable to watch than Colton ever was, however.

Music/singing shouldn't be about what looks good visually, unfortunately it's a huge factor these days. I believe Colton will be the most successful out of the bunch. While I don't think Elise is beautiful, I do think she is the best singer. I really don't know why I watch the show....last year's winner was disgusting.

The best part of this season or any season for that matter was Elise singing Led Zepplin's Whole Lotta Love it was absolutely fantastic.

Either there was something wrong with the audio, or Jessica Sanchez sounded dreadful on that group sing tonight. The rest of the singers sounded fairly good. I guess I shouldn't be surprised?

Is there any reason other than product placement as to why Jimmy was sitting there with Beats headphones on? He doesn't normally wear anything does he?

Nothing wrong with the audio. Once again Jessica was absolutely dreadful on a group number.

I've seen him with those about a million times and I think he usually wears a beats hat. I think the singer he's talking to usually has them too. He is the Beats co-founder.

From the Beats Wiki:
Quote:
Beats Electronics, LLC is a producer of audio products and equipment with their headquarters in Santa Monica, California. The company was founded by hip-hop/rap artist and entrepreneur Andre "Dr. Dre" Young and Interscope-Geffen-A&M Records chairman Jimmy Iovine, and primarily produces products under the brand Beats by Dr. Dre.

Since its inception, its products have been primarily manufactured and developed in collaboration with consumer electronics company Monster Cable. The collaboration has led to financial success for both companies Beats headphones accounted for 53% of the monetary value of the headphones market in the year 2011.

Interestingly, at the start of the last season of American Idol, the artists used a custom made "Beats" microphone during performances. But, audio problem plagued the broadcasts and after a couple shows the switch was made to an industry standard model instead.

Last year's winner was disgusting???? You are obviously not a country music fan. Scotty has had at least three hits on the country charts since he won last year. That makes him pretty successful and pretty non-disgusting if you ask me.

Monster Cable, Bose, and now Beats, complete the Big Three as companies the average consumer, for whatever reason, adore and are willing to throw away their money on overpriced products when there are much better and less expensive alternatives.

Good riddance Colton.

Jessica was a victim of poor mixing of her microphone early on and could barely be heard. I'm not sure how she sounded later because I hit the FF button early.

Maybe. But it is quite a coincidence that she has sounded bad several times before on these group/duo sings, and she was a victim of "poor mixing" this time. I believe that she was just bad. Or maybe Nigel ordered that she be mixed lower in the audio.

Colton being ousted this early was a surprise. I thought the teeny-bop vote would keep him in the mix a little longer. I maintain, though, he'll have a career, although being gone this soon (and losing more exposure) could make it more difficult for him.

And yes, I was familiar with the Earth Wind and Fire original.

A lot of people seemed to think the teeny bop vote would keep him around, even into the finals, but I don't think there has been a precedent for that. Normally the top 5 singers are consistently good.

Thanks for the low down on the Beats thing. Since I dont watch the show much, I just didnt remember seeing them or anything to do with Beats. I have a pair of custom headphones I use. Beats is one of those brands we bag on over at another forum. Here is one of my custom headphones.

Next week is Queen, which will be another trainwreck with this group. It'll be especially interesting to see what the girls sing. In season 5 girls only made up 3 of the 8 when they did the Queen week. This year it is 4 of the 6.

By the way, anyone who thinks that this group of singers is good, you might want to avoid youtubes of performances from previous seasons. I was looking at some of the season 5 clips. It is startling how much better those singers were. What the show has now is minor league talent.

He's a christian rock singer with an incredibly weak voice. There's tons of him out there failing to make much of any mark on the world. He has the advantage of having been on TV for a few months, but that's not going to change the fact that he basically wants to be Lifehouse. The world doesnt even want Lifehouse.

So, that Kris dude from 2009 is just now having a record come out? I am predicting he goes the way of Taylor Hicks.

It's his second album. The first was a mild success at best.

Does anyone else see Donna from That 70s Show when you see Elise?

Second post-Idol album.
Second album, so he already is Taylor Hicks. Why do so many of these people end up going no where? They have all these people vote for them, but yet they don't buy their albums? Is the demographic really that far off between the voters and who actually can buy the albums? I am just confused.

I've watched several seasons of the show and I've never purchased an ex-Idol album. But then again, I've never gotten close to picking up the phone to vote.

I have all of Carrie Underwood's CDs. I also have some individual songs from a few others that I purchased from iTunes.

My wife has 3 Kelly Clarkson CDs and we have been to a couple of her concerts. No one else in the long history of the show has inspired much of any interest in either myself or my wife.
