External Hard Drive that Turns on off automatically?

Who makes a usb external hard drive that is 1-2 terrabytes that turns on and off automatically (or at least sleep mode) automatically when it senses power from the media streaming device through the USB?

Does such an animal exist?

I have a few WD Elements externals (1 and 2 TB) and a 320 GB Seagate
portable. They all go to sleep when they're not accessed and become lonely.
I'd have been surprised if they worked any other way.

generally that is a function of the host computer like windows shutting the drive down. I dont know if that happens with streamers or not.

In a USB-attached external drive, such as WD's Elements, isn't the shutdown
logic and control in the external box's firmware?

The USB protocol has a command to spin the drive down, but many USB->SATA chips do not support it, and I doubt if any streamers would support it. But most chips support spinning the drive down when USB 5volts goes away, but some USB enclosure manufacturers don't implement it.

I also use the WD Element drives (1TB) for backing up my NAS. The NAS's spin-down logic was flawed, so most external drives I tried would spin constantly, which is really stupid for backup. The WD Element has an inbuilt sleep-mode that spins the drive down after about 20 minutes of inactivity.

I have a Seagate 2TB USB3/eSATA drive that powers on and off with my NeoTV550. The HDD has no power button of its own and the power indicator light shuts off when I put the NTV550 into stand by.

I have two Seagate Agent Drives. One, the older 250GB model, shuts down when the PC is off, but the newer and larger 2TB model does not. It does go into sleep mode, but the ready light remains on and it spins up off and on even when the PC is off. Since I don't use it as much I just unplug it after turning the PC off and plug it in when I need it. But I wish it would behave like the older Seagate model. Somebody must make some software to control these things the way we want, most of all the manufacturer.

FWIW, I tried an old 320GB WD USB drive with my NTV550 and it too powered on and off with it. I'm assuming that the NTV550 itself has the drivers built in to perform this, as this HDD has its own power button, whereas my 2TB Seagate does not.

Is it possible that the PC leaves power on the drive's USB port when the PC is off? This is often an option to allow USB wake-up.

I suspect the Seagate is spinning down the drive when it sees USB power go away. The NTV550 does not leave power on the USB, which is probably why it works for Slosh. You could try another USB port, or see if there is a configuration option in Windows or in your BIOS (I don't remember where I configured mine).

The good thing is it does turns the Hard drive OFF when i put my Neo in standby.

I have the same drive [along with a WD 1T Passport]. I'll play around with it and see what happens.

I use a Rosewill RX35-AT-SC SLV USB2.0 & eSATA External Enclosure ($25) and a 2TB Samsung with my WD TV Live (latest version) and it spins down. I believe the WD TV Live is spinning down the drive.
