Thats how it is. A selection of events repeated all day.

I agree the lack of commentators, unique camera angles, and uncut footage is a nice bonus.
The torch coming together and the shot up the flag mountain stood out.
Looking forward to tomorrow!

i was VERY dissapointed with the editing of the opening ceremonies in 3d..the content was superb, but the
jerky transition cuts to movie trailers and panasonic ads was beyond horrible. also i vow not to buy or watch the lorax movie, due to ads during ceremonies that distract & ruin viewing were cut in along the bottom of viewing field ala AMC et other purveyors of such ilk, enough is enough already

Had to call several more times due to no one knowing why channel 484 wasn't working and also being transferred and getting dropped.

Finally someone said the 3D will only be broadcast from 5AM to 6PM EST here in NYC . I'll be at work during these hours !

Bunch of clowns !

I guess the bums sitting on their you know what who don't have to work can watch the 3D but
not us working people !

I tried this yesterday before calling and all that came up was the last OLY in China...go figure.

TWC is going real soon...Fios is being installed on my block so I should have it in a few months .

The AT&T uVerse reps are totally clueless. I'm out of town and had planned to set recording of 3D events via the iPhone uVerse app, but channel 1095 doesn't exist in the app at all so I can't set recordings. Tier 1 support finally figured out that 1095 was a valid channel, but Tier 2 swore it didn't exist at all. Totally pissed off at AT&T at this point. I can't wait for EATEL to bring its FIOS offering to my neighborhood so I can send uVerse packing. These cable and satellite companies have had close to 4 years to get their you know what together on this, and all have failed miserably as far as I can see.

I think you're being unrealistic.

Did you watch the non-3D edition? The cutaways may have been rough, but you didn't miss much. The March of Nations cutaways were so brief (relative to the HD edition) that we saw every nation.

The lack of commentary, allowing the spectacle to speak for itself and "breathe," made this telecast special. And kudus to the 3-D directors. Their choice of camera angles was superb.

Indeed, from all of the kvetching I've heard and read about the Opening Ceremonies, I'm of the opinion that the 3-D version made it work. Whatever you thought of the Promenade of British Culture prelude, the March of Nations in 3-D was, quite simply, joyous to see and so immersive that, indeed, I felt I was there with those laughing and dancing Olympians!

Comcast started broadcasting swimming event coverage on their Xfinity 3D channel at 4 this morning; both men's and women's events are on, with the narration coming from the BBC (I presume). The program guide incorrectly lists this segment as the Opening Ceremony, so check your online TV Guide listings. The events themselves look good, but most of the 3D trailers look like low-rez downloads from YouTube. Also, the promos for NBC's various series are totally out of place in a broadcast of this nature...none of these shows are sports-related or in 3D so why promote them during a 3D sports broadcast? Couldn't they come up with something a little more relevant? Like maybe a 3D demo reel similar to the ones they run in between programs on ESPN 3D? Who makes these idiotic decisions and how much are they being paid???

You just have to call and they will activate it, no charge for the 3D event channel. I had the same message but it took a min to get it turned on. Maybe they want to make sure you have a 3D TV before someone calls to say it doesn't work on their 2D TV lol.

I am a little disappointed that TWC seems to have highly compressed the feed or Panasonic did not record in Full HD 3D. Seems to be at 720p, I have a Samsung UN55D8000 with active shutter which does 1080p 3D very well. With the feed there is a definite lack of definition of details compared to the 2D channel broadcast.

OMG I did call several times and just now got off the phone 1 hour and 4 minutes being transferred to every dept. Thy sent signal I rebooted
several times and they even turned on the PPV 3d channel and nothing is working.

I have everything set to 720 p and even tried other settings and still no good.

Now they say my box is broken (incredible!) and I need to exchange it or wait for a tech to come out Monday which means I have to take off from work
which is not going to happen because it's not the box. You know how I know that ..because I've been able to watch 3d on it before.

Bunch of retards at TWC !

I'm wondering if the recent update a few weeks ago where the guide now looks different has anything to do with it..I doubt it but if they don't know
how am I suppose to know.

FIOS is being installed on my block the last few weeks (digging up street) so I will be able to dump TWC soon !

Cable TV unfortunately doesn't have the capability for full 1080p 3D transmission like Bluray 3D does.
So they use side-by-side or over-under 3D format which is half the horizontal or vertical resolution of the 2D HD format.
On my TWC cable system for the Olympics 3D HD channel they appear to be using 1080i side-by-side format where each image (left, right) takes up one half of the 1080i frame, so each image is reduced to 960x1080 resolution, instead of 1920x1080 on regular 1080i 2D HD channels.

Yeah, its a SBS signal.... It would at least be a little better if they did less compression... TWC is horrible in that regard, only the premium movie channels have a decent 1080 signal with minimal compression in my area. Recorded todays broadcast so will watch the rest tonight, I just wish they made it a smaller block so if I wanted to record from noon to 2 for a certain event I wouldn't have to record the whole block from 9am - 6pm.

Yes I can with no problem. On demand channel 1000 here in NYC has the free 3d and the PPV movies in 3d. I watched Hugo on it and
tested it again with one of the free 3D shorts and all is good.

For some reason they can't activate the OLY on 484.

Guess I was lucky, although I am not that impressed with the event coverage. Most the week will be events already seen during the live coverage which are high profile such as gymnastics. Not much variety given how many events would benefit from 3D. I was bored watching the swimming races which are not as exciting a day later.

Why not do coverage of water polo, basketball, shooting, etc? Add more variety except the same events over and over.

I only have my DVR set for next Saturday when they have track and field and trampoline.

i was not being unrealistic about the EDITING..very poor job of commericial transition..bordering on inept, and ready to shot the damn furry creature running
along the bottom during events. the olympics are great and nice to see in 3d,but surely Panasonic could have done better with less obtrusive cut-ins and fade outs
not fun to show 3d content with such visual presentation flaws
post #79 of 166
You mean the "Lorax" bottom line? That was nothing -- ten seconds and it's gone.

As for "less obtrusive," Panasonic got rid of Matt and Viera. How less obtrusive could you want?

I watched most of the 2d opening ceremony, and I watched the 3d version. Anyone else notice just about the entire segment with the boy finding the girl's cellphone and all that was missing from the version broadcast I 3d?

I watched the 3D content a bit yesterday. Gymnastics in 3D is still gymnastics. Sorry, just not my cup of tea.

Now if the synchronized divers had 3D cams on their heads, that would be interesting to experience... (j/k)

So...hopefully I can find something a bit more to my liking later this week or next weekend.

Otherwise I'm afraid that I'll watch nothing until the closing ceremonies.

I guess it doesn't help that the SBS half-resolution of the 1080i feed looks quite soft compared to the 2D view.

IMHO, YMMV,

I live in NYC and am getting a similiar problem. A year ago I asked them to activate the channel (484) but it never worked. The screen says to receive the channel I have to call Custumer Care. I called them the other day and they sent a signal to my box but it didn't work. I just did an online chat now with them and they told me it was in the Sports Tier and I needed to buy a $5.95 package. I told them that this wasn't true and that the channel should be free. They looked into this further and finally said that I was correct. Here is the channel lineup link showing that it is part of Standard Service and the DTV Value Package (check the color codes) it case you have to convince them: http://www.timewarnercable.com/nynj/support/clu/clu.ashx

The rep said that he removed and re-added the 3DTV and then "refreshed the services". I am not home right now so I will have to check it tonight. I will let you know tomorrow if it works but I'm not too optimistic.
Comcast put 3D Opening Ceremonies highlights OnDemand, and their Xfinity channel has 3D Olympic competition scheduled fourteen hours a day. The showings are delayed about 24 hours from the actual events, and they are not shown during prime time - but it is easy to record them. The 3D Opening Ceremonies production had excellent camera work, and they obviously put thought into their camera positioning.

In my view, this is the best thing to happen for 3D since Avatar.
I briefly checked out some Olympics on the n3D channel on DirecTV this morning and frankly the picture quality sucked IMHO. Since this is supposedly a 1080 source feed I was hoping for an upgrade from the crap we usually get from ESPN 3D but alas it was not to be. I think the SBS format ruins broadcast 3D in general. Maybe I've watched too many frame-packed 3D blu-rays and gotten spoiled...

I hope it works for you.

They didn't mention that I had to pay for it and said that I should have it. Matter of fact every person I spoke to (about 7 of them )
said the same thing.Sadly most of them don't even know what's what.

Funny thing is I think you are right and will call them again when I'm feeling up to it...I'm not in the mood right now after the fiasco
the last 2 days calling them. It really takes a lot out of you dealing with TWC.

Please post back and let me know if it works for you.

Come to think of it they also did what they said they did for you and nothing worked. I think they are hoping we spring for the $5.95 package when in
fact it should be free.

Thanks for your time smile.gif

PS: I have the S&A Explorer 8300HD DVR box since it first came out and never had a problem with it .

OK here's my long chat with TWC. Excuse the typos.. Before you read it there's one thing I don't understand. If I'm able
to view 3d shorts and movies on channel 1000 how come I'm not able to view it on 484 ?

Now if it is the box.. I really don't understand how it can be because I'm able to view 3d on channel 1000 but if it is which one of these boxes should I get ?

I currently have the Explorer 8300HD DVR box which has been a work horse with no problems.

Here's the boxes TWC has listed. Which box should I get ?

It's confusing..if I get the
Time Warner Cable 3D Pass, including ESPN 3D HDDVR box will I still be able to view
Movies on Demand, Free On Demand or Special Events in 3D ?

It's odd to me that this is run during the day, so that when I finally get settled in during the evening it is off for the day. It's on delay anyway, why not show it during hours when most people would be able to see it? Or, just leave it repeat. Not sure I understand.

I agree..it doesn't make sense !

I have to work and by the time I get home I have maybe a hour to watch and that's if I do nothing before settling in. When I get
home it takes me a hour to do getting home things like taking a shower and having Dinner and what not so no 3D time is left.

They should just repeat it or at least show some coverage from 8-11 pm EST being it's on a 24hr delay anyway.

Doesn't make sense !

I have DirecTV and I agree with you.

I have a front projection system with a 106 in screen and the 3D picture quality of the opening ceremonies was poor. Seemed to be low resolution. Very blurry.

The 2D picture was much better.
