I pre-ordered one echo from Newegg right after it went up on Newegg's website. I placed an order for two more yesterday. Yesterday's order is showing as "Packaging" and my order from several weeks ago is still "Order Verification". Strange!

Well my beta Echo finally arrived. Did some brief test to confirm what everyone else already knew. It is running latest firmware (1120).
* 1080i problem is really bad especially when ever the camera pans you will see the scene pan-pause-pan-pause every second or so. You don't need 50+" large screen to see it. I can clearly see it on my 22" PC monitor.
* 1080i H.264 cable program I recorded plays but has the above issue. Most cable programs are MPEG2 so this is a rare clip from certain Cox channels I kept.
* streaming is useless. m2ts and mkv both stutter badly where my Xbox 360s play them smoothly. These are high bit rate (30mbps) files. But even on as low as 8mbps m2ts file, it still stutters.
* WMV is broken. I have a few wmv files that are generated by WHS V1 connector for use by my Zune player. None of them will play, blank screen with audio.
* while try to play various video files, my Echo rebooted numerous times in the middle of streaming, probably because it chokes on them.

It is a complete disaster IMO. I will keep my Xbox 360 for now.

I wonder what I can buy with a 10.00 gift card?

We're getting hints of something big coming via email(?) to beta testers today on the beta forum. What it is remains a mystery.

I really want to see the Echo succeed, so here's hoping it's a miracle firmware update.

But via email? F/W via internet is what we need.. Maybe it's a note saying, "thanks for you assistance, we're mailing you another Echo." biggrin.gif

Have you posted these problems on the Ceton Beta forum?
No need to because they are already on the beta forum.

Hate to threadhack, but how are you streaming such high bit rate files to your XBox? Do they take forever to buffer as well? That was a huge issue when I tried streaming.

Like I said, most of them are known issues. Besides, I just received my Echo today, the same day ppl are getting retail boxes shipped. If Ceton is indeed interested in my feed back, they should send me the Echo a month or two ago.

No they don't buffer a lot. If you have a good network (not wireless) and capable host PC, it is not that hard. All three of my Xboxes work just fine.

BTW, tested a mkv with DTS 5.1 audio and Echo plays it back just fine (probably due to my PC do the audio decoding). On the other hand, tested it in my HT setup and unfortunately, no AC3 or any other surround audio pass through to my HDMI receiver (another known issue). My $80 Sony BD player does much better stream job than Echo. It pass through DTS-HD audio via mkv.

So, let's see what the miracle firmware will bring to us.

Can you give any kind of update at all on the 1080i bug please. It makes watching 80% of the channels practically unwatchable

Ceton echo is going to be like the era of beepers. For a very short sliver of time, the beeper revolutionized communication. Then what seemed like one year later, cell phones came along, just like the xBox 720 will come along. Everyone will forget about how incompetent and dysfunctional this era of the HTPC truly was. Do you know what 823, 123, and 143 means? Yea, I didn't think so.

Disclaimer: I have my newegg preorder, and I'm sticking to it. Next year, after buying a 720, I'll fashion a belt clip for the echo and wear it in remembrance of the beeper. I may even pour some malt liquor on my saturnia marble floors. While my wife isn't around, of course.

HUH? WTH does this have to do with anything and how does it contribute to the discussion here? AFAIK, the 720 will not come equiped with at CableCARD slot and for the near to mid future that is still how TV is delivered (other than OTA or Satellite) because there just isn't enough bandwidth in current internet delivery so IPTV just isn't there yet. I'm not saying it won't happen but I am saying that it isn't going to be next year.

First of all, my post contributes just as much as 90% of the posts here - next to nothing. Secondly, I hope you are around next year when I can say, "I told you so."

There is a reason WMC for the PC has been left for dead. It is being reincarnated into a completely controlled, seamlessly integrated set of consumer devices. Microsoft has two trends that foreshadow what will happen with WMC. The first is how they are fine with dropping support of a product in one form in order to promote another. Case-in-point: Silverlight to WinRT on Windows 8. Secondly, Microsoft knows they have to control the whole stack to compete with Apple products. This is why they released the Surface, instead of letting shyttie, failing, dinasour companies like HP and Dell eff everything up.

You will see, young one. You will see...

I can't think of anything remotely how Silverlight and WinRT is related. Silverlight is always a Flash wannabe and still supported on Windows 8.
That article says a whole lot of nothing, no details. Kind of like presidential campaign promises. I don't see this stuff going anywhere if they require a subscription to Xbox Live to work. Now if the new xbox can tune iptv straight to the console for a reasonable price and has a full complement of channels....until then, my WMC pc with extenders and cable card will be a good stop-gap.

You're obviously not a Microsoft software developer. End development for WinRT is a fusion of Silverlight and WPF built on COM wrappers.

Wow, 20 channels in Australia. Do they even use CableCARDs there? Unless it has a CableCARD tuner it will not tune encrypted CATV content. I do not see enough details in that article to give even an incling of the 720 doing that. And if it requires a monthly fee it will be a hard sell because the end user might as well keep their status quo in paying the CableCO for the STB's.

The article you linked is heresay and rumer. Until we have hard facts on the 720 we cannot begin to discuss it's cababilities.

BTW, I am not so young. I have been assembling computers for going on 30 years now. Can you say autoexec.bat and config.sys? How about COBAL and FortranV?

That's great! Any other features/bug fixes that are noteworthy?

TOSlink/HDMI audio passthrough. Echo settings menu plugin to WMC. Android ICS support as a Christmas present. Just your run of the mill WMX stuff from 2009.. nothing interesting really.
Add proper MKV support, along with smooth 1080i playback, and I'll be content.
