True... Seems like they spend too much time making these blog posts though. They're more like official announcements or press releases. How about some quick and dirty updates like blogs are supposed to be?

Does anyone have codec settings that work?

I cannot get my echo to play anything consistently and re-encoding 8tb of stuff is not going to happen.

I have tried a million combos. Best so far is Win7 clean install w/ Shark defaults.

This file plays perfectly

I realize they are both set to '5' but I am pretty sure it is the ref frames. Change it to 3 or less. 5 seems borderline. I don't understand why it works with some things but not others. 6 or higher consistently does not work.

Can i change that without re-encoding my whole library?

Nope. I am dealing with the same thing.

I have a ticket submitted against it...

If you could reencode one to confirm (or a few minutes anyway) I would appreciate it.

xnappo, did you ever get a response to your ticket?

I hope they can resolve this when they break out of the confines of WMC.

Eric asked what version I was on a few days back and I neglected to respond - just did.

I would really like someone to correlate this.

Echo Version?

I might find some time to re-encode a file this weekend to see what gives. I have never used HandBrake before so I'll need to learn that too.

Thanks.

Yes - Echo version - I am on the latest version.

I'm going to start with one that almost plays.. One that has macroblocking and skips after a few minutes that seem to coincide with when the scene changes so it could be the re-frames.

Yep - sounds like a good candidate. What does mediainfo say the ref frames is set to?

What do you normaly use?

I use MakeMKV, which does a prety good job. But the Echo would always choke on those rips, Xbox does fine.
makeMKV

I'm going to reduce the number of re-frames to this file that nearly plays on the echo and see what happens.

What am i missing here?

House of Lies is 1280x714 with aspect ratio 16:9. Maybe the Echo doesn't know what to do with that.

Well i re-encoded using Handbrake High Profile, got these results. The file now plays audio perfectly, video plays but its not right. Its like it plays 3 seconds of frames, then 3 seconds of frames really, really fast. just over and over.

Yea i get that, but honestly if my HTPC can play it, my XBOX can play it, so should the Ceton. I am willing to deal with some BS on the front end when i get a new file, but a re-encode to super specific standards is just not feasible.

xnappo - So i tried taking both files listed above and changing their extension to .m2ts just to avoid any splitting issues. No change, same results.

Then I decided maybe it would work if I remuxed.
So i took the original file listed above, ran it through mkv2vob using the settings from the updated portion. http://thedigitalmediazone.com/2010/10/25/making-mkv-files-play-nice-in-wmc-with-mkv2vob/

Voila - Perfect playback - which begs the question, WTF?

mkv2vob converts your MKV files to MPG which work perfect in Media Center, but it will also automatically convert DTS audio to AC3, which is the only format that Media Center can work with. On top of that it will also take subtitle files and hard sub them into the video

I few things here that I don't want to do..
Agree - not ideal

But my video had no subs, and not DTS...it was already AC3.
How does mkv2vob hardocde subs with just a remux? Wouldn't that require a re-encode?

And just to throw it out there, TsMuxer(GUI) will remux to M2TS and maintain DTS if that's what you're looking to do. (it will also convert SRT subs to PGS)

You asked what you were missing so I pointed out something that didn't look right. Maybe that's causing problems, maybe not. I would try re-encoding that one file to see if it changes anything. If it plays correctly after re-encoding then you have something to report. Ceton can't fix it if they don't know what the problem is.

A while back I mentioned I was trying Comskip to skip past commercials. Since then, I've found the donate version of Comskip works astoundingly well. Much better than I initially thought. While it's not perfect, I would highly recommend it to everyone using the Echo or XBox.

I currently use a netbook upstairs to watch the occasional recorded show in bed. The shows are shared between the HTPC and the netbook in Media Center - sort of a fake extender. At first it wanted to generate new commercial-skip files on the netbook, but you can specify the path on the HTPC where the skip files have already been generated. So now even the netbook has commercial skipping!

I have one small bug to iron out... the dtbaddin program isn't always recognized when I run Media Center on the netbook. It should be possible to fix this by running it at startup if I can't find a more elegant solution.

Re-encoding this file from 5 Re-Frames to 4 Re-Frames right now. It has been at it for a couple hours and has a couple more to go. This is a smaller file to boot.

I am definitely not going to be doing this to 200+ mkv's. This is merely for test purposes for sure.

Yep - sounds like a good candidate. What does mediainfo say the ref frames is set to?

It plays on the echo but I'm either seeing 3:2 pull down on my little 19" TV or some stutter. I also see a bit more macroblocking than I see playing the file it was made from when playing it on my HTPC directly.

(Note: my original post was edited to use media info rather than plex to show more information about the file)

This has been playing for a while and the macro blocking, although minor, I was seeing earlier has smoothed out but the 3:2 pull down is still apparent. I need to connect the echo to my AVR/HTPC and see what happens there. I will report back.

Seeing the same thing with SOME of my encodes(the 3:2 pulldown-looking stutter). I am running one with re-frames 1 and b-frames 0 just to see what happens.

Something to do while waiting for Ceton to actually say something - thanks for your trials Sammy - while I don't want to reencode everything, knowing sure-fire settings that work would be nice.

I use makeMKV but could switch to handbrake. I don't like the way it looks on my HTPC and abhor only having AC3 audio though so IDK. This was my first run with it. Maybe another run will look better, but I doubt it. Compressed is compressed. This file was compressed as it is because it was done a long time ago.

Handbrake and makemkv are both just front ends to mencoder... If you want DTS just let it passthrough.
