HDMI audio in...to LPCM audio out converter

I need to strip out 7.1 LPCM data from an HDMI source. Don't want 8ch analog audio out, I need 4 pair of LPCM data. I guess stated correctly that would be 4 X AES. Is there a converter box that does that?

Such a box would violate the HDCP (copy protection) specification, so they don't exist. The best you will get is 2 channel 44.1 kHz digital output.

Someone brewed up some modded DVDO Edges once upon a time with 7.1 LPCM put out via four extra sp/dif sockets on the rear and they change hands occasionally, mainly on the 'meridian unplugged' forums.

Or search for CYP CLUX-11SA to see a standalone audio stripper.

There's possibly this www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=9164
I don't know if it will actually convert the signal on the HDMI out, or just change the EDID. I'd like to find out if this will do the conversion too.

Don't think the Gefen will do what the OP wants as he specifically said he didn't want 8ch analog and the TOSLINK isn't going to give him 8channels of LPCM either.

But I think the HDMI output will be converted to LPCM when the switch on the front is set to LPCM5.1/7.1. I did ask Gefen and they said this would happen, but now I'm not too sure they meant it just changed the EDID as far as the HDMI output goes.

I've found one on eBay, and the seller had a 30 day money back guarantee.

I found some definitive answers by contacting Gefen and Cypress.
Both units output analog only.
According to them, it is in fact an HDCP violation to strip out unconverted LPCM from HDMI.
So that's the end of that I guess.

I'm unclear on what you are trying to do. Converted to LPCM from what? HDMI is already LPCM (assuming you are decoding at the source) they are just tricking the source into outputting stereo or multichannel with the EDID. If you are trying to go from one of the Dolby or DTS codecs to LCPM this isn't the box you need, it doesn't have a decoder. The HDMI is basically a pass-thru with EDID twiddling.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone hasn't done it out of Hong Kong but I've personally never seen one. I'm aware of some HDMI to single S/PDIF convertors but I suspect you are looking for 8 channels of High resolution audio. What are you trying to feed? A Meridian?

Don't know about AES but,,,

Atlona's description of their own product is grossly misleading at best, and false advertising at worst. Although it claims to "strip" or "dis-embed" 7.1 LPCM (aka AES3) from HDMI, it doesn't give you access to the actual LPCM. It only gives you access to the 7.1 analog signals/channels that have already been D/A converted from LPCM. I think the problem was whoever did the translation was unfamiliar with the subtleties of the English language. All receivers do exactly that (convert LPCM to analog), so I believe this product is aimed at a PC user with an HDMI output that would want 7.1 sound on their desktop.

I agree. I purchased this product and never got anything more than stereo and even called the company and got a replacement unit to wit, same problem again. Even used Geffen HDMI detective to precede the unit.

There are "unofficial" mods which can accomplish this. See: http://www.jvbdigital.nl/jvb.asp?cur...g=SPDIFupgrade
