Panasonic DMP BDT500 - Page 21

I'm gonna be, I do believe, a proud new happy owner of the 500. I placed my order yesterday with Amazon. With regular shipping the total came to $278. Saved on the shipping but Amazon estimated my getting it on July 9th to 12th. Yes, a little wait perhaps, but I can live with it. cool.gif

I bought it mainly for the dual HDMI outputs and the excellent AQ and 2D/3D PQ. My Yammy RX-V663 AVR is four years old but is still as good as ever with excellent quality sound. However, it isn't 3D compatible. I have a 5.1 setup utilizing Energy speakers. Since it is a capable pre-pro AVR, I use a 20 year old Adcom GFA 545 stereo power amp to drive the surrounds. Surprising as it may seem, I liked the sound of the V663 driving the front L/R speakers over Adcom even at excessively loud listening levels. The V663 really kicks arse driving just the LCR speakers in the front.

My V663 also has 7.1 mc inputs. I may tinker with using the 500's burr dacs instead of the V663's which are also burr dacs but are likely 24 bit since they're older. The bare bones bass management using the 500's 7.1 analog outputs has left me a bit wary of going that route. The V663's YPAO autocal/room EQ is not any where near state of the art either but certainly not as primitive as the 500's. Nevertheless it won't hurt to try I suppose. I don't however expect it to be any better than using the 500's dedicated HDMI audio output. I do expect the 500 to perform quite well audio wise with the V663 no matter which way I hook it up though.

In the mean time I have downloaded and read the 500's manual and read through the entire latter half of posts in the 500 thread. I must say that I don't have any interest in streaming content off the internet though. After getting hooked on blu-ray PQ and AQ four to five years ago, streaming is not for me since I'd much rather collect something tangible like BDs. I have hundreds of BDs in my collection. I occasionally rent from local video stores and Red Box any titles that I am not sure about owning. I did some occasional streaming with my PC and LAN hooked up to my HT. Usually the sound was fair even quite good, but the picture never came close to BD quality imo. Amazingly in just four years the market has proliferated and flooded streaming, netflix, etc. into every component one buys: be it the player, the AVR, or even the HD TV for christ sake. I'm not really complaining nor am I knocking it. I know lots of folks are really turned on by streaming content and that demand drives the market in that direction. I understand that. However, the only use I'll have for an internet connection to my 500 is for d/l firmware updates.

I don't have a 3D TV yet, but I do plan on purchasing one this year. smile.gif

It's been interesting to watch how quickly amazon has reduced their discounted price on the 500 player, which is now discounted by slightly more than 20% off.

Perhaps it also says that the USA economy is weaker than many think?

I agree that the home theater experience when properly setup (or even when not smile.gif) is typically a big improvement over a commercial theater. It's good to know that 3D looks good in home theater as well. smile.gif

I think I will get a 3DTV within the next couple of years. I really want to let the active vs. passive tech. competition work itself out. I'd also like to see some significant improvements in LED TV tech to boot.

The players however, seem to be performing extremely well, the 500 included.

His home theater produces a much brigher and sharper image. He says his theater also has more 3d depth. It is difficult to find commercial theaters with a bright 3d image. I am sure is High Power screen has a lot to do with his excellent 3d image.

However, while waiting for the one to improve, then some other new tech hits the market at affordable prices. Something new and/or better, it seems, is always going to emerge eventually. I don't know whether HD TV tech will really ever reach a technological plateau within the next several years or not. That's why I say if you like what you see now, then get it and enjoy it. For me life is too short to sit on the side lines missing out on the action and big plays. I say get in there and play ball!

Luckily for me, the 500 came along which will allow me to keep my old AVR for the audio and still enjoy 3D on my new display. I think they call that having your cake and eating too. wink.gif I love that kind of tech bridging the old with the new. We don't see that too often these days.

Thanks!

After this answer on page 15 of this thread, there is a discussion of bookmarks and using a formatted Scandisk. So, to parade my ignorance, is the Scandisk a "fix" for even movies like Batman Begins... or is it necessary to allow the player to pick up all Blu-Ray movies where they stop upon shutdown? This is an important feature for me, as the lack of it drives me crazy with my current player. smile.gif

I use a Sandisk class-10 30mb/sec read 8GB SD card and yes, Batman begins works perfectly for me. You can actually ALSO put media (like Mp4 video files or Mp3 music files) on the card as well. The player creates a partition for the BD storage. I have a 3.8GB mp4 video file sharing the SD card and it works perfectly.

The class-10 makes BD live loading an especially fast experience. You just need to format the card for FAT-32. I personally let the BD player format it, then removed the card and placed my video file on it, then back it went into the '500. I dig it. I will eventually put a 32 or 64GB card in it....makes for a nifty built-in drive that allows the front door to pivot closed (unlike my USB 16GB drive sticking out of the front now).

This whole SD card thing is extremely confusing.

Did I mention "extremely"? smile.gif

Anyhow I ordered a 16GB "amazon" class-4 unit at $9.99 with free 2 day shipping (due to my annual "Prime" payment to amazon)

Pulled the trigger on the Panasonic DMP-DDT500 earlier today. Amazon.com has a great deal right now and with Amazon prime upgraded to overnight shipping for $3.99 will be getting it tomorrow..

Can't wait to see it in action!

Just arrived and in process of setting up. Have not got a time to view any video or listen audio yet...

Love the remote except for entering passwords, email addresses, etc. Does any know how to use the hard keys to enter text rather than swipe pad?

With the heat here, I wish I were in "SoCal" biggrin.gif

But I didn't like the earthquakes.

I expect my 2nd 500 (returned the 1st) to show up in the next 2 hours.

But won't mess with it till Sunday, when there's finally a good drop in temperatures.

You're the 1st I've seen that likes the 500's remote.

Lots of remotes work with the new 500, including $10 ones from Panasonic.

Not that that directly answers your question about entering text in a convenient way.

BTW nice Kuro; and be sure to post how you like both picture and sound that the 500 provides.

I'm jealous. This player looks absolutely amazing. 7.1 analogue outs? Check. Fancy DAC? Check. Built like a tank? Check. Price south of $300? Check. I don't need this player, but it's fun to window shop as well. smile.gif

Regions can be changed using the standard remote. I'm not going to repeat the info again but a search in this thread will reveal the info.

Sorry if this has been covered already but tonight I tried to play Tangled and it kept skipping around about halfway through the movie. When I switched to playing it on my laptop or my PS3 it played just fine. It was a Netflix disk so it had minor scratches but nothing that should have kept it from playing. This wasn't the first time the BDT-500 has done this. Is there something I can do about this or should I return the player?

Did anyone notice an improvement in analog sound with the latest firmware update ?

Have you noticed an improvement with the latest FW or are you just asking in general? I was just getting ready to post a 2 ch. analog comparison I did with the 500 using the last FW and the Oppo 95, but I won't waste everyone's time with out of date info. And I'd have to do it all over again. eek.gif

Actually I think I do,But I would want someone else to corroborate this. I couldn't be happier with the sound .

I did not notice any "2 ch. analog" sound quality difference; player came with FW ver. 1.22 and just updated it today to latest ver. 1.39

Anyway, I for one am interested. Post away with your comparison of the OPPO 95 vs Panasonic dmp-bdt500 for stereo sound via rear RCA outs on either player.

Kindly be sure to state if stereo source is an actual CD disc, or an external 2.5" USB HDD with high quality 16/44.1 rips of good CD discs, or whatever.

For MC movies (the few that actually have good sound), the sound quality seems the same to me. But the center channel might be ever so slightly louder?

Tough to say as there's no easy way to go back and fourth with FW ver. 1.22 and latest ver. 1.39

Please help me out.

I would like to use my Directv remote, RC65, to control my 500 since it can control up to 4 devices: my DTV receiver HR24, my Yamaha AVR, my old Sony BD player, and my Sony TV. However, I wasn't able to find a remote control code for the 500 in the user manual, nor on the shop panasonic website. My RC65 remote is programmed by keying in the device's remote control code.
The code is 20490, same as every panasonic disc player. Your RC65 should also be programmable by picking the brand/model on your DVR. Just pick panasonic and any DVD or BD model. They all use the same code.
Thank you for sharing the Panasonic player code, 20490. It's cool that Panasonic disc players have the same code for remotes!

Sure thing. Just to clarify. That's only the code for UEI made remotes like one-for-all and most satellite and cable remotes. The code on other remotes is different, but that code will control all panasonic players made in the past several years.

I need to get another player and am on the fence about getting a 220/320 instead of the 500. I currently have the 310 and love it, is the 500's picture quality really a huge jump over the 310? If so, I don't mind paying extra for the 500 and making it my primary player.
Anybody had any luck with playing movie files from hard drive and be able to skip chapters. If yes, what file format is that and is it WIFI or wired?
Thanks in advance.
