some calibrators set "black tone" to OFF on the 2011 D8000 model...
try OFF and keep us updated

Not really, I think you need to consider that with the dark blacks we have now the eye's sensitivity to further reductions is limited, so you're only really going to appreciate something around 50% or better reduction in MLL. For the 10-30% they're talking about, you'd need to have the two next to each other to even notice, and the difference is minor. Some people obsess over this value, but personally I think there are several other performance parameters that are far more important with current plasma tech.

Here is the crappy pics. I had them both side by side and I believe I saw improvements.

It's an optical illusion, but if you like it then by all means, set it to whatever you want. Understand that you are adding detail that never existed and in doing so you may be masking real details - this is why purists do not use the sharpness control, or use it minimally. This page explains it a bit more:

hey guys. PICS WILL FOLOW SOON. I am running my slides now and I will have the tv pro. calibrated as soon as d-nice is able to get here, he told me he is touring pa early april. Any way, as far as blacks , I can tell you A side by side comparison, done in my home, clearly shows the e8000 does have darker blacks. Now that said, I would say with out having them side by side the difference would be diffucult.. The pq IMHO- is better, again s/s

Did your old pn59D8000 have noticeable buzzing? When comparing noise you have to sit in a similar position because the buzzing was very directional on the 2011 models. It would be great news if they finally fixed this issue.

Just picked up the 51E8000.

Picture looking good; Baylor's highlighter-yellow uniforms vs Colorado's black test the screen very well

Im detecting a hum coming from the A/C cord input

Samsung apps is getting an error, but other wifi apps working. Hmmm...

RE the Samsung apps; it's probably discussed in these boards somewhere, but I'll report here for easy reference. This thread gave me the solution. Manually enter the DNS of 8.8.4.4 and it's solved.

And no Amazon Prime app? Still? There's a good chance I'll return this TV over that issue if I cant find a solution.

Anybody know when the 64" models will be in stock? Amazon still only has 60" and smaller models. I was hoping to pull the trigger before the end of March, when the Chase Freedom 5% back from Amazon expires.

I can't even find any of the e series except for the LEDs on the site.

What about whites? I was in BB the other day where they had a 60e8000 next to the 2011 samsungs, and the whites were MUCH brighter almost like the LED right below it. I was very impress as it was very noticeable compared to the other plamas around it. Have you noticed any difference in the whites or brightness?

For me, this is the big question. I've been more than happy with the PQ on a 5 year old Smasung 46" LCD but I would like to upsize a little. The slim bezel would give me the ability to go to 51" in roughly the same overall size as my current 46".

I haven't kept up on the forum for years but overall I'm getting the impression that black level is now a "problem" for plasma The plasma sets from 5 years ago claimed true-black (whatever that means) the bigger issue was dull whites. I'm kinda surprised at this point most folks aren't more concerned about whites.

Have a great day

Never judge a display based on what you see on the sales floor at Best Buy.

I was watching the 51e8000, 60e8000 and another brands 60ish LED at BB before I bought the 51e8000 there yesterday...

To me the differences you describe were still noticeable. The plasma, even on dyanmic settings, had a less bright white than the LED. But this was more often a liability for the LED than an asset. It looks gorgeous on a white-screened Apple commercial or something like it while the plasma was not aqs life like in those situations. But when sunshine is on the screen and/or you see a shine off of a person's face...the LED looks over-bright and washed out in white while the plasma is much more rich with those bright whites and doesnt over-shine.

I'm aware of Best Buy not being the best place to judge displays as there could be many factors for differences in displays. That is why I'm asking tonyjd40 if he noticed any difference in whites since he has both displays at home.

I wasn't trying to compare the samsung plasma to an LED. Just using the LED as a reference as to how much brighter the whites seem on the 60E8000 when compared to the other samsung d7000/8000 plasma displays around it. Especially when they played the hockey scenes in those clips BB always have running.

btw.. Congrats. How do you like your new 51e8000?

i have a lot to learn about optimization from the folks in this forum, but my initial impressions after 18 hours:
-I prefer the relax mode with contrast up and sharpness down
-Im working with the diffusers to get the hum down. It seems to be working.
-The reason anyone buys the 8000 over the other series are the gadgets and so far they're great. The Skype app with built-in camera rocks as does Youtube. But, as mentioned above, no Amazon Prime? That might be a deal breaker for me. I'm into Prime and Samsung cant seem to get together with Amazon to make that happen. That doesnt make sense to me at all; there must be some strange contractual reason for it?

Like CaTaSTrOphiK, could you please comment on the following?:

1. Build quality. Last year's bezels were apparently poorly made and were "wavy".

2. PQ perceptions next to the PND8000.

3. Any fluctuating brightness? (try hockey)

4. Practical differences between the PN8000s and PN7000s.

5. Any perceived buzzing issues?

OK founf a hockey channel, maybe an old game ? I am not into hockey, but anyway. OKwow --- bright white almost burned my eyes !!! ( my living room is really dark) There is a weird look , Don't really know how to explain it. Once in a while when the screen is mostly white smaill portions of the screen seem sorta grey ? I really dont know how to explain more than that. It appears as the entire scene is really bright white and then small areas look alittle grey or like staticy ? ODD. It is not a large area just small bits that apear this way __ around the edges mostly --- sorry I can't explain better , maybe if I can get a pic of it, i will try .

Sounds like macroblocking in the source material/transmission.

A good hockey test that I've heard of is to use "Miracle" on Blu-Ray (or DVD even). Or some other hockey movie (Mighty Ducks?).

Any specification news? How does the PNE8000 series compares to the Kuros 8G/9G?
