Holy crap disk prices went up.

Media center lost a drive today. Luckily it was mirrored. Sadly, I have to bite into a 125% price increase on the drive. What was once $79.00 in June is now $179.00 on New Egg. Ouch.

All I wanted to do was replace a Samsung 2TB drive with a new one. Hurts.

Yup.

I have two sammy's I paid 68$ each for. They are 1TB. Now they go for $149.


Crazy.

Do you need the same drive as before?

I just grabbed a 129$ 2TB green WD from new egg a few days ago on special.. FYI. It was $50 less than the Sammy which is why I did it.

Yah now is not the time to buy an HDD. I'm in need of one on my server but am holding out until they come down some.

No I hear you man. It does suck. I have been shuffling data and not keeping as many movies as normal.

I would be bummed if I had to buy one right now for sure.

Consider taking a habit from the server crowd that obsesses about uptime, get a spare or two the next time you do a full build and they are dirt cheap.

I picked up 1 more than I needed when they were at $60/2TB last summer, sitting as cold spare ready in the drive cage.

Thats nice. I am running flexraid so I have a 2tb as my parity drive. I have thought a few times about ditching flexraid to use that drive. But I'd probably have a drive failure the next day.

2TB drive isn't all that common a year ago. Don't you have some sort of warranty left? Even it had only 1 year warranty and passed, you may still be able to claim refund through your credit card's extended warranty, assuming you paid with one that has the benefit.

This is all still fallout from the flood-related supply interruption right?

How long before this blows over and I can return to my long-neglected ZFS/iSCSI NAS project?

The factory that makes the controllers for almost every hard drive maker was also hit hard. They say that will have an even bigger impact since they'll have to switch to other parts suppliers and the quality will go down.

Right before the shortage I remember seeing 3TB drives for $119 on sale. Didn't buy it since it was close to holidays and I thought they'd drop further

You might want to look at some of the external drives. They seem to be selling for much less than their internal counterparts. You'll probably end up voiding the warranty by taking it out of the case so decide if the savings is worth losing the warranty.

I have sold off a lot of my old PATA drives on ebay because of the flood. Some of them went for more than I paid for them almost 10 years ago. I feel bad for all the people affected by the floods, but worked out for me. Cleaned out the basement, and made some money on stuff I had no use for.

it is too small to really use for anything... SO I am gonna list it this weekend.

I also have a 2.5" and 3.5" Velociraptor 300GB 10k RPM drives...

They are also small.. I might list them too.

I think the time is right for a decent return.

Yeah the prices now are like a roller coaster! I bought a 1.5 WD last week on Amazon for $102.
Clicked the same link the next day and it was $149

What really sucks is all the price gouging that people are asking for their drives, even used ones with no warranty! I know it comes down to supply and demand, but when someone says I got this drive on a Black Friday sale and it’s just sitting around in the F/S forums.

Frustrated and just venting yes.
