This applies more-so if you haven't seen the movie. Let's say you take a family 4 to the theater to watch a 3D movie, and most prices for a 3D movie during prime time is $13.50/ea so it costs $54 for a family 4 and that doesn't count if you want to buy snacks/drinks.
