Shure mic and pc interface with REW

My son has quite a collection of audio recording equipment. I see that many people are using the PE omnimic for room calibration. Can I use a studio or stage performance mic like a Shure sm57 with a FireWire interface to pc to use REW for measurements and would a stage or studio mic go low enough for subwoofer measurements? I guess I will just have to try it out.

Thanks

Here is the response from Shure. I don't think it is a good choice to to use as a measurement mic.

Many here utilize either the Dayton EMM-6 microphone or the Behringer ECM-8000 with a USB soundcard. If you have a soundcard that has built in phantom power, great, if not, you will have to utilize a device that has phantom power for the mic.

If he has a Shure SM81 you could try that. The SM57/58 is essentially a vocal mic capsule (both use the same capsule) and a very poor choice for any sort of calibration measurement.

Note the 81, as well as most other measurement mics, require phantom power your sound card probably does not provide so you'll need a preamp as michael hurd said.

the mic connection part is covered since he has couple mic/line interfaces, it outputs either firewire or spdif back to the computer. I guess I'll have to wait till he gets back from college in the spring and try it out.

thanks

Call him and see if he has an SM81, and if not suggest he really needs one! Or, just pick up the Behringer and have him walk you through hooking it up.

so with an emm-6 connected to pc, a minidsp 2x4 with 4way advanced plugin and REW, i should be able to room calibrate 4 sub channels?

You mean EMM-6 plus preamp? Or does your soundcard provide phantom power (very few do)? If not, you'll also have to grab one of your son's mic preamps

mic -> preamp (with phantom power on) -> sound card -> PC running REW

PC runs program for miniDSP, then AVR sub outputs (1 or 2) -> miniDSP -> subs x4
