Pivos AIOS HD Media Center: The *Semiofficial* Thread - Page 20

Sold my AIOS prior to being able to test the official FW. It looks improved from looking at the screen shots. Waiting for the PCH-A210 to get here to start testing and hopefully be the AIOS replacement if everything goes well with it.

Hey all.

I just found this thread and went through the 20 pages and I have questions.

I have a WD TV Live Plus and thought of looking for another player option
while waiting for responses to my questions about it which is when I found this thread.

This player seems interesting but I would still like to have the same questions answered
before possibly getting one.

1. I also just saw the new one with the android os and I was wondering, if I don't play
games or need calculators on the tv and so on, what would be my main use for different apps?

2. Would I be able to get some version of firefox as I hate both IE and Chrome?

3. In the regular AIOS, can I watch all video types on youtube?

4. Also, did they replace the old remote on the original unit or is it the same as the one
people were complaining about? I just now saw that they did but will new units sold
have the new or old remotes and if so, would you see that on the order page do you think?
Mind you, I would possibly go for a used unit from someone here WITH the good firmware
installed if I got one which would mean I would have to get the replacement remote anyway.

5. I have two harmony remotes and the last one I got a few weeks ago is this model..(300i) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16880111041
Would the buttons translate well for the AIOS unit? Would I have to map them individually so to speak or do they have an option
on their site for the AIOS?

6. I saw the code file for the remote. Is this something I can do myself for the Harmony or something?

7. What's the deal with the remote for the NEW unit? Better?

8. Can I use external keyboards (wireless) with any/both of the units?

Also, thanks in advance for all the work you guys do like helping us out and writing firmware.
I've never updated any firmware on my WD TV and I don't have this unit either but that's not
the point. I appreciate it regardless.

GusGus. Congrats on your unRaid server. I've had one for close to 2 years now and I love it. I only have 8 drives out of 15 possible
but it's time to pop a few ones in (12 gigs available and around 10 used)

Anyway, here are my questions and I'm copying the whole text from my other post
on the WD TV thread so that it makes more sense.

========
Guys, I bought the WD TV Live Streaming (WDBHG70000NBK-NESN) some time ago but didn't really like the changes they made to the UI so I sold it to a buddy of mine.

However, I"m rethinking the decision and would like to ask a few questions.
There are a few features that I miss on the regular WD TV Live Plus.

First, one of the things I don't like on the Streaming unit and I think I asked here but never got a reply on that.

When I have a list of files, in Streaming, I see TWO columns vs ONE in the older unit.
This is all good unless you have LONG filenames, in which case I have to wait till each
one of them starts scrolling to see what I'm looking at.

Here are things I miss on the Plus unit that I would like to know if they are available on the Streaming unit.

1. On the Plus unit, unless you're using the MUSIC mode to listen to music or the VIDEO mode to watch
video clips, even if they are music clips, you miss out on many features.
This always irritated me and I always wished for a simple mode, kinda like the file management or like
on a regular computer. You find the file/directory you want to play and just play it and if there IS video, it
shows up and if not, you just get the sound.
Also, if I play through the music option, I can back out of the song into the list while it continues to play,
I can't do that if I do the video mode.
Is this doable on the Streaming unit?

2. I have lots of files and I tend to organize them well with lots of sub directories and folders.
This means that often, it can take quite some time to dig down to where I want to be, ESPECIALLY
if I'm watching a video file but want to go into music mode and into the music folder.
Is there an option to have certain folders and/or MODES set up as shortcuts or something?

3. How about bookmarking a spot where you left off and I dont' mean IN the file itself, but the location?

4. Is the streaming unit as stable and bulletproof as the plus unit?

5. Can you go to the MENU/HOME and make changes and then go right back to where you were
rather than having to go through the whole process of finding the file you were playing?

6. When you pause or fast forward or anything, you see the progress bar at the bottom which covers
a big part of the screen. Is there a way to get it to go away faster than the 5 seconds (or whatever)
it takes now before it disappears?

7. Any way to go back just a few seconds with one click like you can do on a dish DVR?

8. Why is it so flaky REWINDING compared to FAST FORWARDING?

9. If the WD doesn't do all this, is there another player that does that offers the same simple UI,
reads same amount of file types and is as bulletproof as the WD and yes, I do think it is a very well
made unit and I've had very few problems with it.

Thanks for any replies

George

Well the android ICS give way more rich user experience, and is more targeted to those less core users who are interested in internet related usage (and have less demanding media for local streaming), check my review in the second post of the XIOS thread for a brief comparison.

The AIOS comes with its own HTML5 certified web browser, for XIOS you can install which browser available for android.

Yup (as of right now).

Product number was not changed, so there is no way to know when ordering online, that said new remote has been out for a while now, chances are you would be getting the new remote if ordering from an active retailer (like amazon).

Make sure you get a good deal if getting it pre-owned, because the running price now after MIR is $70~$75, so if you are going to give up warranty (and add $10 for the replacement remote) you should be paying significantly lower price than that.

The AIOS is already preloaded on the harmony database.

The codes are for programmable remotes, you don't need that for the harmony.

well, its subjective (never had issues with the original remote) but the new remote has glow in the dark buttons and better button placement (IMHO).

Yup, any USB keyboard supporting the HID profile would work on both units.

Thanks a lot.

Could you look at the questions in the SECOND part (that I originally wrote about the WD TV units) and let me know
if the AIOS does those things? If it does, I'd definitely like to try that one.

By the way, anyone have one for sale at a good price, WITH warranty left on it (original receipt IF the warranty is transferable) AND pimped with a good theme?

THanks

George

AIOS file manager has filter "ALL/Video/Audio/Photo" so yes you can do that.

Yes

Nope, you can't on the AIOS too.

Semiofficial firmware has a method that involves little scripting, the unofficial firmware has allows you to create shortcuts from the player interface.

Folder shortcuts ? thats the same as the above.
Shortcuts in the file itself is supported (as long as the file is on local storage and not networked).

You can go through setup options during playback and then back to resume playback where it stopped.

1x rewind then play.

Because backward seeks are implemented relative to the start of the file not to the current location.

Well, still sounds like something I should have a look at.

I'll be on the lookout for a deal unless I find one here.

Is the warranty transferable IF I should find one here?

I would like to have one already pimped as I'm scared
I'll mess it up.

Which unofficial firmware do you recommend and
do you have any screen captures?

Thanks again

George

You can't really mess it up. If something goes wrong all you have to do is reflash it. Furthermore, you can't get it all "pimped out" because you have to "pimp it out" according to your set up. You can get the AIOS for $90 on amazon.com or you can wait till they go on sale again on newegg.com with a MIR for $70.00.

Cool thanks.

I think I'll give this thing a shot. I like the sound of all it offers and it's time to try something different.
Don't like the upgrades WD did to their new UI.

Gus, dunno if you saw my comment about the unRaid server earlier but I've got one of them too.
Awesome stuff smile.gif

How many drives will your unit hold? I see you've put 10TB in it so far.
I have been looking at media players the past few days.

I have a projector and plan on using the AIOS HD as a music player and I don't want to have to turn on the projector to see a select a song. So, will I be able to select a song using the LCD screen or does it have an android app controller? Also, the only media player under $150 that has an android app is the WD live streaming device, it also supports FLAC and MKV, which is a must.

Thank you
YOu know they have a new player that is Android driven, right?

It's called the Xios and I'll link to it if you can't find it.

Dunno if that'll help you but it doesn't have a screen.

hmmm thanks for the info...but it's not going to work for my purpose. I should have added that I need an internal HDD as well.
Ok.. You can't use an external drive?
Well, it looks like it may come down to that. I wanted my setup to look cleaner but I suppose I am running out of options.

Thank you

- The AIOS supports headless audio (using the DMR functionality), where you can send the audio via any windows media player or similar programs (without turning on the display connected to the AIOS).

- Additionally "Media Player Helper" (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hacklbee.app&hl=en) Android app works fine (not for the playlist creation part but for the single file playback).

Sweet. PM me a pic. I don't want to hog the thread. I've only got around 8 drives out of 15 possible in mine
so plenty of room to grow (luckily) and if I didn't always have some kind of computer problem, I would
have the rest of my drives in there already.

Well, it turns out that these days, with all the options out there, it seems that we can never find something that suits all our needs.
Prolly 'cause we have higher demands than we used to but I'm in the same boat AND the reason all my computers
have been custom built for the last ten years or so frown.gif

02/07/2012: AIOS_AASOROR-R20_3.0.1.7
- Fixed: GUI bug pressing back from the jukebox return to home menu with "APPS" icon higlighted.
- Updated: Video Driver.
- Updated: Audio Driver (fixing poping noise with some AVRs).
- Updated: Euro IMS.
- Removed: APPS -> MediaFly
- Removed: APPS -> YouTube (SD)
- Added: SRJG Jukebox (credits: Mika, Zozodesbois and Snappy).
- Added: AIOS web remote (built on "Max Yoa" iMax remote).
- Added: single parameter configuration for transmission installation.

Download the file from here (use PANIC RECOVERY to apply the firmware).

A super short how to:
- To access the webremote go to "http://AIOS_IP/webremote/remote_h.php"
- To configure transmission (after updating to the latest version on optware via telnet), just go to Setting -> Network -> Download Location and set that to the drive you want transmission to work on (sda1, sdb1, sdc1 ...etc), be sure to disable/enable transmission for settings to take effect.
- To run SRJG jukebox, just keep a movie.jpg, movie_sheet.jpg and movie.nfo with each movie.avi. Open the "Jukebox -> config -> Movie path" and select the root folder of you movie collection. Keep everything at default value for now. build the jukebox by "Update Jukebox -> Rebuild". I will upload a thumbgen profile to automate the scrapping later today.

Best of luck,
