so that's why they cost similar money and don't have as nice sound. they have costs tied up in onboard DACs. makes sense now

I think some of it is also a matter of what is presented to consumers. The pro-audio solutions have seemed to always remain dedicated to the realm of studios, with only a few exceptions. The "soundbar" and other "lifestyle products" are definitely much more aesthetically pleasing, and fit into the home better.
And the level of profit margins between these two seem to be quite different, where the gap between the cost of parts and the MSRP becomes exceedingly high on the consumer side.

greg, while i have your attention - any thoughts to a good monitor in a different form factor? something that is say 10" wide? can be taller and deeper but width is my limiting factor ...

There a lot out there.
Personally, I really do love my Swan M200mkIII's, and they fit that bill, also have grills, accept standard RCA input and are quite nice looking

Although they're a fair bit of money, at the CES, Dynaudio announced their new Xeo speakers. They're only 16/44.1 but they suggest that we will soon have real wireless speakers (they still need electricity but not signal wire).

Almost unanimously, producers and sound engineers use self-powered monitors to record and mix albums.
I use Swan M200MKIII monitors at home and Behringer Truth monitors at work. Both are outstanding and will crush the vast majority of consumer offerings in imaging, frequency response, dynamic range and fidelity. I'll put, particularly, my Behringer Truth B3030's up against any combination of the highest end things you can find at a Magnolia store, and be quite confident in the outcome.

Hello Greg, do you think you could compare the M200MKIII to the B3030a, and describe any differences in sound signature and which one you prefer and for what reason? Right now I'm looking at getting some speakers for a desctop pc setup, and these two models are at the top of my list, as far as actives go.
