I've seen heard Seaton gear and it is amazing at AVS funlvr1965's place.
I haven't heard the Captivators.

Mike

Have you been over since he switched to JL's?

Sowk,

Have you ever thought of building your own subwoofers?

I started out with an SVS tube, then built my own sono tube sub and now have built two 18" sealed monsters (size wise). You can see the build in this thread.

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1221102/teds-twin-avalanche-18s

If your looking in the $1,400 price range each, you could base your build on the TC Sounds LMS 18". One LMS 18" in a box with 2 TC Sounds passive radiators driven by 2,000+ watts should be able to shake the foundation of your house. This setup would also be idea for your layout. The optimal placement for two subs is front and back of the room but your layout doesn't really lend itself to a rear sub.

The other option I would look into is a Danley DTS10 or DTS20, some feel it is the standard all other subwoofers should be compared to. They even sell the DTS10 in kit form. You have pleanty of room behind the screen for a sub of this size and if you want a lot of output below 20Hz, these may be the ticket.

TedO... Wow, great work on your subs!!!

Your living room setup looks great!

I think I have decided to get Seaton SubMersive's for now.

Going to pick them up this weekend and will try to setup Monday (took the day off work... Haha) hope to be all set by Monday afternoon.

Yes, Wayne's curiosity was lured by shiny black boxes and someone offering a great deal on them. When I stopped by to help re-calibrate the system with the Catalysts, the before after was rather striking... as everything was gone below 18Hz. rolleyes.gif

My mistake back then was not leaving in a huge ramp up to the response below 40Hz when I first dialed in the subs. I did a more accurate and detailed calibration with a more balanced bass response that worked great with higher level listening, which Wayne rarely listened at. In my short time dialing things in, the Catalysts easily allowed to push the clip/overload limits of the JL's, which we never hit with the SubMersives, and that was before the HP was introduced. Sometimes size can matter. cool.gif

I look forward to meeting you this weekend SOWK. smile.gif

Yes, it is the wonder drug you have been missing. Sowk came over to my house, viewed my Darbee (they had just introduced at that time and were only $250), borrowed one from me to try out and ordered one for himself right away. It seems darbee has increased pricing.. Even at $500+, I would have liked it. i was happy it was only $250. I bought three and gave two to friends overseas. So... Yes, it is the wonder drug you are missing!

Sowk, where's the report on the visit to Mark's to check the subs out? Did you bring home a pair?

I did pick up a pair. I need to do some more tweaking and position changes before I can make a post on performance.

Welcome to the dark side. smile.gif

I just changed most all of my audio, so I am now getting back into room measurement. REW is much easier to use these days, with a USB mic. No more mic preamp. smile.gif Along with building my three front speakers, (ported TD12M's with SEOS-12 waveguide and DNA-360 CD) I added two new 18" subs to my room. Now have three 18's up front and two 12's in the back corners. I got out my SPL meter to measure what kind of peaks I was getting, when playing the Amazing THX mushroom trailer at reference, I was getting 119db peak at my seat. The subs drivers are hardly moving, so it is very clean. I do have a little boost added down low.

Got confirmation that having a floating wood floor adds a lot of "fun" and tactical feeling to bass. Something that's just not possible with a concrete slab of a basement. For those going to build a theater, try to build on the first floor of your home if possible.

You can get a great feeling of bass in the basement too, but you need raw output power and low enough htz, to get the tactical feeling out of it.

Agrsiv95, was nice enough to have me over, and the tactical feeling his first floor theater provides is amazing and adds a lot of depth and "fun" to the movies.

Wish I could replicate in my theater. And it's not like the bass is over powering, they match the mains very well, it's just the benifit of a smaller room and suspended floor!!!

I was able to tweak his picture too while there. I did not bring along equipment though. The Runco puts out a nice image.

Agrsiv95 has one of the best and most confortable media rooms ever. We just sat and talked for hours yesterday. Not something that is easy to do in a dedicated theater room with recliners...

Lots of us "carpet over concrete" guys have had fantastic success in getting a large chunk of that floating wood floor effect back by adding some tactile transducers to a properly constructed wood platform, riser, etc... that is made to flex. Like you mention, you just cant recreate this sensation with subs alone on carpet over concrete no matter how many subs you have and no matter how good they are. I run 4 SVS subs (3 PB13 Ultras and a 12/2) in a sealed 12x17.5 room and can hit 126db at my listening position (uncorrected analog SPL meter), but my dual Buttkickers mounted to a mini platform with 6 kinetic rubber isolators I built creates a sensation that my subs simply cannot. I simply cant imagine watching movies without the BKs now and they work incredibly well in conjunction with the subs. I still consider my BK upgrade the best upgrade I have ever made to my HT as it got back much of that wood floor sensation that you dont get otherwise in a carpet over concrete room (I had a wood floor in my first HT in a rental house). If implemented right, BKs or similar feel like a natural extension of your subs, not gimmicky. Highly Recommended!

If this involves also enjoying some fine champlagne or wine along with some see-gars then I would definately be down with that... though then again I image most folks prob enforce a no-smoking policy at their home theater, wife enforces it in mine frown.gif But hey now that you mention seating, I finally was able to get some HT seating with the tax refund, I got the Palliser Playback with infinite recline. Do any of you guys have palliser HT seating with the Buttkicker LFE's option built into it??? I want to retrofit mine with them but want it to remain as stock as can be so want to check out one in person to make sure I mount mines right! I figure someone knows someone who has Palliser with Buttkicker option around the Wisconsin area who would be cool with me taking some pictures of them in exchange for some champlagne, a bluray disc etc... Thanks in advance.

I don't know anyone with buttkickers... Sorry. frown.gif

I also assume most have a no smoking rule as it would not be the best thing for a front projector and its filters. smile.gif

Hi guys. My name is Buzz and I just discovered this thread. Although I spend most of the year in Florida, I'm in Wausau June through September. I'm a THX Certified Level II video calibrator and one of the things I offer is 3D LUT calibrations using LightSpace software and the eeColor Box to do the processing. If any of you are interested in the highest end calibration available let me know here on this thread - I'll be monitoring.

Regards,
Buzz

Edit: this attachment explains what it is that I do. LUT Brochure.pdf 335k .pdf file
