Strange that it happened when you unplugged a Droid phone. In my experience going into protection mode (if not indicating a permanent problem,) is from a fault such as a bad speaker, bad wiring, or something like overheating.
Seeing how you unplugged it, and it's still faulting, it may need service. One thing you can do is to disconnect everything from it. Then unplug it, and let it sit for a bit (even overnight,) then plug it back in. If it faults again, it's probably a problem that requires servicing the receiver (or buying a new one if it's out of warranty, as most Sony models would likely cost more to service than they are worth.)
