Best Time(s) of Year to Buy Blu Rays?

Some movies never seem to drop in price. For example, I've been looking for The Incredibles to drop into the $20ish price range for a while now. I don't think that it has been available for less than $28 (with either shipping or tax on top of that) since its original release date.

According to Camelcamelcamel (the online Amazon price tracker), "The Incredibles" BD Combo Pack has gone down to $19.99, back in mid-June last year:

Thanks for the time machine. I was being a bit figurative though. The movie was released April 12, 2011, and if you didn't buy it in the first 2 months, you were stuck with the higher price. Per the tracker link, it looks like it was released at around $25 and stayed there or higher until mid-June for about a month and then jumped up to about $34.

Black Friday/December is the time to buy. I picked up a nice stack o' movies this time around. The only thing I've bought since then was Rise of the Planet of the Apes for $10 at BB. (I had one of those rewards certificates I used during their $15 sale on it)

I have nothing on my list right now, maybe if I can catch something on Amazon after a price drop I'll grab it. Honestly I've got over 350 movies and over half of them are still factory sealed. I've got plenty to watch for the time being while I wait for price drops

If you're only after the movie and don't care too much about the extras, check out the periodic Amazon UK sales of Disney/Pixar titles - this is where I've ordered the bulk of Pixar blu-rays for well below $20 (around ~$15 per title all in). Of course, if you want the multi-disc copies, you're pretty much stuck with buying the North American version.

The only thing you'll have to be careful about going this route is that not all titles will be Region A compatible.

Thanks for the tip tezster. I checked and The Incredibles does run about $15 US once doing the pound to dollar conversion, but it is Region 2 only. Bummer for us Region 1 folks unless you have a region free player. I don't.

No, it isn't - I know because that's the version I have, and it plays fine on my PS3
UP and Wall-E are region locked, but a number of earlier titles (A Bug's Life, Toy Story 1/2, Monster's Inc., Incredibles) are all region A compatible.

Hmmm.. The Amazon UK site states that it is. Maybe a double check somewhere is in order. I guess that Amazon just wants to list the current region that they are selling in, and not other regions.

Region 1 is a DVD code. Region A is for blu ray. So amazon might just be porting some of its info from the DVD listing

It was showing Region B/2 so it was both... There has to be some place out there that shows the actual regions that these disc play at.

The most concentrated set of deals seems to be around the Holidays, but good deals can be found sporadically during the year. If you don't mind used (I have yet to buy a used BD that had to be returned), GoHastings and Amazon are GREAT places to find deals. Most of my BD collection was purchased below the $10 level, although I have had to wait for quite some time to get newer, very popular releases.

I am frugal by nature (OK...cheap *ss SOB according to SWMBO), so I am also not above hitting the Pawn Shops for $10 disks. These you do need to be more careful of, however.....

While the holiday shopping season is probably best for prime, new release titles, I am finding great prices (<$10) for a lot of catalog stuff recently. Check out Amazon's < $10 list and Walmart is currently running some good deals on $6 & $8.

I suspect the industry is trying to build volume on DVD -> BD upgrades and is making a lot of catalog stuff attractive in price. And I'm talking mainstream films, not B-movie drive-in stuff.

I too regret not picking up several titles around the holidays. I wish I would have brought Star Trek TOS Season 1 for $45 on Amazon...it's $70 now. Long wait in front of me now.

Just walked into Best Buy this last week and found that you could get Multiple 3 movie packs for $15 or less on Blu-Ray

I got the Perfect Storm, Twister, and Posiden (Kurt Russell one) pack

wandering through the Isles I found a TON of movies for $10 or less

I typically get new releases at Target on release day for $20 or less with included DVD...for movies that I really enjoyed in the theatre..

In total I have 90 movies on blu-ray and I would hazzard a guess at an average of $12 a pop...

If you really want to get High Definition movies cheap and you have a 360, buy the HD-DVD drive and have at it. When HD-DVD format died, I got 40+ movies at an average of $3 a title

just a little over a month before black friday. It's on Nov. 23, right? i should hold off all blu ray purchases until then.

I've actually found more good deals at Amazon just before Black Friday (starting around the end of October through mid-November) than on it. Maybe it's just the particular items I'm looking for? I also missed some good buys one year by assuming the Black Friday price would be better (won't make that mistake again). Last year I got the Peanuts Holiday Collection and Christmas Classics for $20 each just before BF; on BF, they went back up in price.

But the best time to find good deals is whenever they occur. I don't think it's easy to time it correctly. I just keep my Amazon basket stocked and check often for price changes. I also check each Sunday at BestBuy.com and Frys.com for their ever-changing deals ($8 and below with free shipping). It only takes 10-15 minutes, and I've snagged The Magnificent Seven for $5 and The Blues Brothers for $8 that way.

Black Friday is the best time to buy blu-rays if youre just starting to collect. For old timers with huge collections, it would be whenever the price goes down for their target purchases

I cain't really speak for the other old-timers out there, but that is certainly true for me. I particularly keep my eyes open before and after the holidays though, because many stores will try to dump the overstock of "last year's goods" to make room for the new stuff. In the last couple months I've found some great bargains on older, and some newer films that interest me.

 

Still waitin for Lawrence to budge off $17.99 though.

I just keep my eyes out but the summer-holiday period is when the sales happen. I've always bought more titles in the last five months of the year.

yeah i'm kinda expecting a dump of overstocks but somehow, it hasn't happened yet. should be during January. :/

I really have to slow down on this addiction though.
