Dear Walmart: We Need a New High-Def (HD) Recorder in North America!

You've been our primary source for std-def (SD) recorders for the past 7 years. They are produced by Funai, one of your Strategic Suppliers, and they've been the ONLY ones available in all of North America with HDD and digital tuner.

 

Funai had planned to stop production in 2012 but, based on our appeal to you and your specific request to Funai, they gave us one more production run with the MDR533/535/537 Series, now being sold by you online Thank you for making it happen!

In 2013, Funai will be stopping production for good and we'll be left out in the cold! However, Funai still makes high-def (HD) recorders with HDD, Blu-ray Disc (BD), DVD, and VCR and sells them in other countries!

We're hoping they might do the same for North America (USA, Canada, Mexico, Central America) if you requested it.

This is our APPEAL for you to consider selling, online and in stores, a multi-tuner HD recorder like Funai sells in other countries... they have the required technology. See Wish List here.

Here's hoping other members of this million-member-strong forum add their requests to this thread to emphasize how badly we want and NEED this recorder technology here in N.A.

Production of these Magnavox std def (SD) HDD/DVD recorders will end in 2013. There are currently NO PLANS to replace them. But YOU can help with a last-gasp effort to keep "something" coming to replace them!

    Send a letter to Walmart HQ in Arkansas. Here's the text of my letter and I encourage you to copy/modify it and send your individual requests to the same place:

    Attention: Product Selection & Ordering Coordinator for Funai Electric, One of Your Strategic Suppliers

    Dear Walmart:

    We Need a New HDD/BD/DVD Recorder in North America!

    You've been our primary source for std def (SD) hard disk drive (HDD) recorders. They are produced by Funai, one of your Strategic Suppliers, and they've been the ONLY ones available in all of North America with HDD and digital tuner for the past 5 years.

The current model 515 is a great machine, as its predescessors have been.

If the next model were to also be able to burn Blu-Ray discs, this would be a great improvement.

It wouldn't need to have additional software programs/features added.

Yeah, Wal-Mart and Funai! Give us the next step in the 515's "evolution"! A machine with a Blu-Ray burner and likely a larger hard drive to store the material to be burned to disc.

Well you can pretty much bet, that if the do continue on with offering anything in a DVR recorder line, is that it will definitely not have TiVo software.

My TV has too few inputs to be adding more components. Consequently, I've been putting off acquisition of any type of BluRay component pending availability of a DVR that can play BluRay and thus replace an existing component without giving up any current function. The machine here requested would fill the bill.

Put me down for one since the 5151H is a great unit. Please keep your price below Amazon since their logo should be a shark and not a catfish. Just look at the reviews from your customers as an example of the reaction to this unit.

Count me in , too -- even though I have a handful of standalone DVD recorders and a just acquired blu-ray player, I'd definitely get one or two of these. Walmart could be the sole provider of this popular piece of equipment --it's rare that a company gets an opportunity to serve your customers by providing a unique product AND make a profit at the same time. Win - win!

PS The ONLY items I've ever purchased at Walmart are a magnavox 2160A and a magnavox 515 recorder. Before that, I had never visited the web site and I have yet to enter a Walmart store (there are none in my neighborhood). The fact that Walmart was carrying quality equipment I could not find elsewhere - and offering it at a fair price - made a customer out of me. Now I check walmart.com when I'm in the market for other items... seems like a good business model ...

I have three of the previous recorders and would jump at the chance to buy three more of these new machines. My son and my daughter each own a Philips 3576 and a Magnavox 515. They'd buy new machines as well.

It would be helpful for you to indicate not only how many you would buy but also what price you are actually willing to pay. Seems to me a prospective price point would influence their thinking the most.

I would buy at least one if all the important wish list items are met. The price point would have to be somewhat competitive but considering everything we'd like to have obviously it will not come in anywhere near what the earlier recorders were going for.

Price-point is NOT important now! (See note I added under the "Our Wish List.." title at top.)

I'm sure that would have to be decided between Walmart and Funai, as they always do, and we'll most likely get a chance to weigh in on what THEY decide in their planning efforts.

Individuals setting price-points will be counter-productive to the BASIC purpose of this thread: to just get Walmart to notice a potential unfilled need.

I might, too. But of course, I will have to wait for plenty of reviews to come in first, like I always do.

It ain't gonna be particularly cheap, and I don't want to end up feeling I wasted my money. I really don't want anything where I have to "work around" any continually-occurring bugs, or with any kind of frustrating behavior, or that demands any kind of continual attention. I just want it to work. I'm getting too old for that ****, anyway.

Yes, Please! I NEED this unit!
I currently have a
Pioneer Elite DVR-7000, and a Pioneer 640.
BOTH units are GREAT and still working!
However, I DON'T know for how long!
BUT Count me in for a Blue-Ray Recorder that records
onto discs, with HDMI inputs like the
Chinese Magic TV 7000 unit. With
Moving-Motion Chapter icons on the discs! Like the
Toshiba XS dvd recorders from way back when!
Every other country has Blu-Ray Dvd Recorders!
Like Japan, New Zealand, Europe, etc.
SO, WHY CAN'T WE IN THE US HAVE THEM TOO?????

I would be in for one! Not everyone wants to buy a home theater PC which is what I was thinking of doing. I don't want yet another computer to have to take "care of" with constant software and hardware updates. Gieve me something like a stand alone unit!

I am sorry I don't see a point of discs. Most people record watch delete. Why would you want discs? Also every system in the us is different (cable, satellite, atsc). Most people don't use atsc (I do though). I use a hdhomerun. What's wrong with that? I have a 1TB hdd for saving my recordings. I can even export my recordings.
