Audyssey Speaker Detect Error. PLEASE HELP

I have an Onkyo TX-NR709. Every time I try to do the Audyssey setup (quick or Multi EQ) it fails at the end giving me a Speaker Detection Error on the Front L and R speakers every time.

I notice that the "chirp" sounds coming from the Front L and R are not nearly as loud and crisp as the other channels. When I manually go into setup I can see that it does detect the all the correct channels. I can also go in and manually adjust volume, speaker distance, etc to the front channels. So it is recognizing them but still giving me this error when doing the Audyssey setup.

I have called Onkyo and their suggestion was to switch the Front and Surround channels. I did and the problem followed the Front speakers. So when I switched the Fronts to the Surrounds, I now got a Speaker Detect Error on the Surround channel. They also suggested I reset the receiver a few times. I have and I still get the same error.

I know that the polarity is correct coming from the Front channels. I had previously bought the HTIB Onkyo HT-S9100THX system. I still have all the speakers from that system, I just swapped out the receiver. Not sure if that information helps or not.

Is there anything else I can try? I'm ripping my hair out over here trying to get it to work (not really but maybe it will help get some info faster). Thank you in advance for your help.

How old are your fronts, check them with a ohm meter, they may be shorted-out.

IIRC, AUdyssey will return a detect error if there is no high frequency response (ie blown tweeters. Sounds like a possibility here. Play your receiver's manual setup tones and perhaps you can hear whether the tweeters are making noise.

joehonest - i'd get a slight reading from the speaker if I ohmed it?

JHAz - i guess i don't see any manual test tones in the setup. all i can play is when i go to setting the volume of each speaker and it just plays static. any ideas on where to play another test tone?

The static is pink noise and it IS the test tone. Is there a lot less treble in the front 2 than surrounds? Can you put your ear close to the tweeters and hear whether there is anything coming out of them?
