JVC RS45 or Epson 6010

Why not consider the Sony hw30 since you are used to LCOS?

I wouldn't get the RS45. It's a fantastic 2D projector but the ghosting leaves much to be desired. Like coder I'd go for the 5010 or the HW30. I have an HP screen and coming from an RS2 (RS45 now) the HW30's black levels wouldn't suffice for me. If you are coming from a 350 the difference might not be as much. The FI in 3D is a nice touch for the HW30 but the torch brightness and better contrast of the Epson might be a better choice (plus it's less expensive). Not to mention the glasses are cheaper as well.

take a look at the link in my signature, I did a small shoot out between the RS45, Epson 5010 and a few other projectors.

The Epson is a nice all around projector and the 3D is noticeably better than the RS45. The 2D is very good, but not exactly what you would expect from the RS45.

Overall it's a good balance of 2D and 3D, plus the torch modes are great for ambient light HDTV viewing.

Would 5010's pixels be more visible from 1x screen width than the 40/45?

Yes, that is why for 3D if you want a film-look, the Sony hw30 is a viable option to the JVC RS-45 if 3D is a concern. The Epson is really good, but if you are used to LCOS the lower pixel fill might bother some, otherwise most aren't bothered depending on how close they sit.

I am not sure how far I was sitting last time exactly in terms of X screen width to the Epson 5010, but the pixel fill is a little tiny bit better than the 8700ub, but not enough to make it completely a non-issue, it still detracts from the film-look. Some will argue they prefer this edgier look of LCD, but it's a trade-off IMO, if you watch 3D enough I would take the Epson 5010 or Sony hw30 over the JVC's though.

just went to demo both the jvc x30/rs45 and the epson 5010 at the local magnolia store. here's my quick observation. for 2D material, i thought the jvc still has a very tiny edge in it's more film-like quality and shadow details. however, the edge is now much more difficult to notice when comparing the jvc with the epson 9700ub which appeared much noisier than both the jvc and the newer epson 5010. in terms of 3D material, the epson is definitely brighter, the jvc was probably still slightly contrastier, but there's noticeably flickering no the jvc that's absent on the epson. to be honest, i wasn't all that sensitive to the flickering, but my wife really had a hard time with the flickering on the jvc, and had no trouble with the epson. so between the epson and the jvc, i would pick the epson for sure. i haven't had a chance to see the sony hw30. based on what i've read so far, it seems like there are strengths and weaknesses with both epson and sony. i think in terms of street price, the sony is probably around $500 more than the epson 6010 and close to $1000 more than the 5010. with the price difference in mind, any of you picking the sony over the epson?

Best Buy Magnolia? I really wish I could demo the Epson. My BB Magnolia has the Sony HW30 and a Sharp. No place near me that I know has the Epson on display unfortunately!

not bestbuy magnolia. regular magnolia store, the one before magnolia started showing up in bestbuy.

The best buy in my area has had the hw30 hung in their magnolia room for 6 months,and
and every time I went there ( about once a week),they couldn't show 3D on it.To this day It still is not functioning.I think Best Buy doesn't care if they sell any of these,they probably make more profit on flat panels.

They make more profit selling paper clips...

Same at mine, they are running component video cables is why no 3D but at some Magnolias they do run HDMI and hence 3D

I would like to know if anyone on the forums has seen the hw30 operate in 3d at any best buy? I'v been at 5 stores and it's all the same thing. You would think sony had reps that visited stores to make sure their products were presented in the proper condition.

Yes at some best buy/magnolia stores. I recommend calling all in area to avoid a wasted trip.
