Speakers adequate for backyard theatre

They "work".

I think it all depends on just how life like and visceral you want the audio portion to be. Of course, this also mates with how large and expensive you want to go.

This is what I did for an outdoor movie. We were sitting about 50' away and it was fantastic.

I later asked about subs and was told I'd need FOUR subs (I'm talking huge subs) because you get no benefit outside, you need raw muscle.

Regardless, you can do it and have a load of fun. You can do it with 'adequate' sound or you can ramp up the sound. Just depends on how much work/$$ you want to put into it.

Look for high sensitivity speakers so that you get more output for the wattage of your receiver. And if this all you will use them for, I would think some of the more inexpensive pro dj type speakers might work better.

And no. A home audio sub like the Polk won't accomplish too much outdoors.

I just did a search. I think we in fact used the EV 360A. I don't think they're made anymore. It's more of a vocal speaker than a full range. Meaning, don't put an action movie on and expect to be wow'ed by the bass but hey... for fun, it's a blast.

To tell you the truth, we once had our niece over (wheelchair bound) and she wanted to sleep on the outside deck AND watch a movie. The house in the picture above isn't too friendly for a wheelchair so we improvised.

I brought my Klipsch Promedia 2.1 PC speakers to the deck and we used a bedsheet as a screen. The sound was plugged into a 1/8" jack on a portable DVD player.

Worked great.

Many of us own speakers that have much higher wattage ratings than the receiver. That means there's room to upgrade to a more powerful amp But no, you won't get additional benefit from that over a 200 watt speaker.

Just make sure that your receiver handles the speaker ohm rating.

The other thing to look for might be some big old used Cerwin Vegas. I remember how loud those would get in my college dorms and the kind of mid-bass they could put out.
