The only way to get new files to show up is with Deep Scan, which can only be handled manually or through a scheduled script.

Yup same problem here running an unRaid box. TurboScan works for every library except Tv Shows. I have to do a deep scan every time I add new Tv episodes.

Really been contemplating the idea of converting my ~1600 DVD/blu rays to some format to serve up via plex

I know very little about Plex but had a question about transcoding. After reading this article, it seems like having the ability to transcode with Plex would be really useful, especially if I wanted to watch content remotely. However, after reading this FAQ about Plex Media Server on a NAS (http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/FAQ:_Plex_Media_Server_and_NAS) and looking at the accompanying list of which NAS drives support transcoding (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhqU12yGv_OxdC1VYjYtMmRiSlVReVZhNVBLZ0JxSmc#gid=0) it seems like the only NAS drives that can transcode 1080p HD video are the $2000+ NAS drives. In this thread, it seems as though lots of users are saying how great and easy it is for Plex to transcode your video. Just curiously, are you running Plex off of your PC/Mac, do you have a very powerful NAS drive, or am I misunderstanding how this all works?

Thanks.

That's the beauty of PLEX, it is very versatile. Plex server can be ran on, pc's mac's, servers and yes some NAS devices. As you saw though specific processors are necessary for transcoding driving the price up for a NAS if that is your preferred device

I run my PLEX server on a WHS2011 machine and it handles it transcoding without a hitch.
Same here...WHS 2011 and works perfect. Just using a basic dual core processor and no hiccups at all. Will eventually possibly move everything over to a more powerful WHS machine so I can transcode for at 3-4 devices at a time.

brickie and oman321:

Did you build your own home servers to run WHS on? Also, with WHS being discontinued what are you planning to do in the future?

I don't have anything setup yet but I was thinking about the Synology 213 primarily to serve music to my Sonos (at least for now). From what I've read, Synology is rather user friendly which would be good for me given my limited tech experience. I'm just trying to become as fully informed before I take plunge.

My server was built from a Lenovo that was headed to the recycle center from my wives job. So free made it perfect to play around with for my first server. As for the futture,at this point haven't really thought about it..If I do find the time to rebuild my server to a little bit more powerful machine, I will probablu upgrade to WHS 2012 at that point. But right now it is rock solid and does everything I need it to.

I built my server a couple of years ago. WHS2011 will be supported for years to come so no worries there. I've seen a lot of folks still setting it up now because it's such a bargain.

I have been using MyPlex on my android for quite a while now. Recently I have not been able to sign on my android using my credentials. I can sign in to the web server at my.plexapp.com using my username or email address and password. When I try this same combination on the android app it says, "You couldn't be signed in to myPlex using the credentials you provided. Please check your username/email address and password and try again."

Anybody experiencing this issue?
Any suggestions on what is going on?

EDIT: It will connect just fine when I'm on my home wireless network but when I disconnect WiFi and go to 3g/4g it gives the error above.

Well apparently there was an update in the Play Store. I d/l'd it and installed it then deleted my plex server as well as disconnected and reconnected the server in the MyPlex app. All is well now.

Does the Plex server now run as a service under WHS? What about the C: drive size limitation that WHS originally had? Seems to me I recall Plex creating havoc with temporary files. The Plex server runs just fine on a Synology NAS and under OSX or Linux. One of the reasons I got out of the WHS server approach, which I actually really liked, was the poor way Plex ran under it.

I'm getting a synology NAS tomorrow and I'm wondering if the titling required by Plex will cause issues with my Popcorn hour.

Plex doesn't rename your files or alter the metadata on the original fileset. This is how I'm able to use the same files and folders for MB and PMS.

For my PCH, I personally just use the PlexNMT app.

Very impressive update out today that includes some long requested features like multi-user support and seeing who's watching what when. It looks like most of the features in this update will require Plex Pass, which at this point is completely worth it. Hopefully we'll see the release of Plex Home Theater soon!

Has anyone here tried out Plexconnect?

I am running PMS on my ReadyNAS, so my understanding is that this won't work unless I'm using either a PC/MAC as a server...is that correct?

Thanks!

I don't have ATV so I can't be positive but why would you need PC/MAC server? From what I've read it's just a work around to getting the client on a non-jailbroken ATV. I don't see why it wouldn't connect to any PMS just like the other clients.

I think the apple trailers request from the ATV has to be rerouted to PMS using an addition program. Looks like it uses python. See here.

Edit: Might work on ReadyNAS and other devices. See the wiki here.
Thanks...they've updated that page since I was there yesterday. I don't think they had the NAS guides up before.
PlexConnect works remarkably well on the ATV. The Elan modification gives you a nice GUI and there is a nice Apple script available to start the process without opening Terminal. I had to close one of my 2 Plex servers ( a Synology NAS) to get it to work as it seems to get confused with multiple servers. Pretty impressive hack based on a Chinese workaround that has been around for months.

My files live on a Synology NAS but the Plex Media Server runs on a Mac Mini. PlexConnect can be anywhere. There is a problem with Synology NAS units at this point having to do with python but that will no doubt be fixed. It took 2 minutes to set it all up. Much better than the jailbreak approach which was always unstable for me when I had ATV2'S.

I have jail broken ATV2 with Plex and Roku. I standardized now on Roku due to the stability and other issues on the ATV. What is the UI like compared to the ATV JB version? How is audio? Are you getting AC3 support?

Roku works well with Plex but I really don't like the UI. Prefer the ATV. But for me to use Plexconnect I'd have to update my ATV which I'd prefer not to do or buy new ones.

What do you think?

The UI is still very basic. I am afraid you'll you'll have to wait a bit before moving off the older ATV and/or Roku. The ATV2 UI was fine, just the stability as you mentioned.

I moved off my ATV2'S and went with Roku2's. They are okay but I have since moved off them for the Sony GTV boxes for Plex. Way nicer as Direct Play works great for most things, including AC3 audio ( and AC3 audio is supported on the ATV3). The Roku2's are odd players. I quite liked them for a while but quickly tired of the UI and they are underpowered, although the Roku3 is much better.

Although the initial UI of PlexConnect is quite basic it does suit me in that it leaves out most stuff I don't use. Elan's GUI for PlexConnect was made to be that way according to his blog on the subject. He is adding in pieces that people request.

Support for channels is not there yet. Some work though.

There is a very neat program on the Google TV called Mijuu which gives you a very Plex like experience. In some ways better. Finally, Syabas has released a Plex client for the PCH-A400.

Am rambling here but your mention of the Roku brought up very mixed feelings as I once had such high hopes for it. Seems to be quite in common in media player land... nothing ever seems to be " the One" smile.gif

Thanks Phillip. I have Roku 3 and 2. The 3 is more responsive. Similar to the Atv2. But still no speed demon. I switch back and forth between the at , Roku and PC. Ironically I don't like the plex ui on the PC. More the control then anything else.

I have have GTV boxes. Namely the Netgear NeoPrime which s very nice. I can't use gtv because of the control in that there is no ir support so I can't use my universal remote.

So appreciate your update and will hold off doing anything new.

Just to make a small comment, I downloaded the Plex client to my Samsung SmartTV last night. All installed ok, and the interface is the 'usual', but although it seems to do movies very well (from my local PMS), there's no photo or music feature working yet (you're just told the feature is not yet implemented). I would have thought these parts would have been the easy ones to get working, but I guess not.

I have been using the Plex client for several of my Samsung Blu-Ray players for nearly 2 years now. The devs are working on the updated client that should support to music, photos, channels, etc soon: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/forum/89-samsung-smart-hub/

Hi
I hear the Sony SMP-N200 does not support itvplayer because of the lack of flash.

Would I be right in thinking that, because it does support plex streaming, I could use itvplayer on it by streaming from plex, which I hear does support itvplayer?

Has anyone managed to do this successfully on the Sony for itvplayer or 4oD?

Is anybody using Serenity for Plex on an android tablet or other android device, such as an android stick computer or GTV or for that matter? I'm thinking of getting an android stick and trying it out but was wondering if there was any feed back on it. Thanks.
