I haven't tried serenity, bu it's worth mentioning the Plex team just released a 10 foot interface option for all android devices including phones, tablets, and GTV. It's pretty slick. Now I just need an Android stick that will support H.264, VC1, MPEG2, AC3, and DTS.

So this guy goes out on a limb to develop an app and the Plex Team undercuts him? Nice! At any rate, I don't have PlexPass and I thought that the new Plex for Andoid was going to public use on July 25? The announcement in PlexWeb is dated July 18 and say available in one week? I guess that is a flexible definition of a week..

Do you need an android stick that supports dts with Plex? Will PlexServer not transcode to AC3 if the playback device it is connected to can play dts but then transcode if the playback cant play dts?

It should transcode the DTS. In an ideal world, I wouldn't want to transcode anything. Audio isn't as big a deal as video though. I'm not sure how many Android devices support all the video formats in blu-rays (H.264, MPEG2, and VC1).

Also, I hope you're joking about the undercutting part...

I was.. partially. The serenity app looks more like XBMC than Plex, IMHO. I think that it may be complimentary to the Plex App itself and may be worth trying it out.

Finding one that supports the video codecs is important but it would be nice to plug one of these bad boys into the back of an AVR and at least pass through the HD Audio.

Anyone using the the Plex Connect to run Plex on an Apple TV3? I am curious as to how well it works? Can you generate 1080p video and audio? Does it run smoothly when surfing the video lists? Etc???

From what I've read, Plex Connect works very well. It's free, so you should give it a try and let us know how it goes!

I just installed plex connect on my ds412+ and pretty happy with how it installed; it took less than 1/2 an hour to find and download a couple utilities( lots of info on forums on how to). It also runs good on ATV3 aswell under the trailer app. The sorting and options in plex are far greater than ATV which would be great for a very large movie library. I have about 100 movies which I sorted into 6-7 basic genres ( it's either a comedy or action; not action-comedy😉). But that can be fixed. Overall it is good but I still prefer the ATV version better for now. I'm just a little OCD so now I have plex running on everything in the house; even if I don't use it. 😊

For those that used Plexconnect like me, the update borked it:

Apple TV Update Breaks PlexConnect, But You Can Bring It Back

Yesterday the Apple TV got an over-the-air update that broke the awesome PlexConnect app that brought Plex to unjailbroken Apple TVs. If you've already updated, there's a way to fix it.P

The Apple TV update was actually pretty solid, bringing apps for Vevo, the Weather Channel, Disney, and the Smithsonian Channel. Unfortunately, it broke the PlexConnect hack that let you install Plex using Apple's Trailers app. Fixing it takes a bit of work (and you'll need to be familiar with the Terminal), but it isn't anything too hard—all you need is a microUSB cable and a Mac with Apple Configurator installed. Check out the link below for the full instructions.

There is a fix available.

Looking for some help, I'm not smart enligh to figure this out and could use the help of those that are. I posted this over in the plex forums but I might as well try here, too.

I know you've probably seen more than you should of these types of threads, but I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why I get this error.

The facts:

I don't know much about the technical side of things, I like to read and try things out. I can't even give you guys a log, since I don't know how to do that, ha.
I just build my first HTPC.
I use PIA as a VPN.
I have been able to port forward successfully in my Netgear router even with PIA.
I cannot seem to figure out how to get myplex server to connect so I can view all of my files on the road.

What am I doing wrong? It won't work "standard" and it will not work if I manually forward the port, 32400. I tried to port forward using the recommended port. I have turned off VPN and it still did not work. I have the following settings enabled on my router:

I am using Netgear Genie version V1.0.2.62_60.0.87
Name: Plex
TCP/UDP
External Starting and ending port is 32400
Use the same port range is checked
Internal starting port and internal ending port is 32400
Internal IP is 10.0.0.2, which is the computer the MPS is installed on, and I am currently on/HTPC.

What am I doing wrong? I know it's probably easy for someone out there, buy I'm not that smart.

I'm setting up Plex media server for the first time on my WHS2011 server with drivepool add-in and I'm confused how to set up the Plex library. I tested out just adding one of the storage drives to scan under TV Shows and it basically clumped all the tv shows that were found on the drive into one with the name of "drivepool ..." What's the correct way to set up Plex libraries on WHS2011 with drivepool installed?

Unfortunately port forwarding can be a bit finicky on some routers. Did you try manually specifying a different port?

I don't quite understand what you're asking. Are your TV shows showing up correctly in Plex, i.e., organized by series and season? I'm not aware of any special setup needed for drivepool configs.

They aren't. I scanned, say, my "D" drive while setting up my TV show library. It pulled TV episodes, as well as movie extras occasionally, but put them in one large collection called "drivepool..." It had 98 episodes in it but were from many TV shows and movies as well.

You need to organize your media appropriately. See here.

The TV shows are correctly labeled. Does the rest of it need to be at this time as well?
I manually forwarded to port 32400 as it says to do in the myplex instructions, no dice.

Is there a router I should try?

When you add a new collection, Plex asks what type of media it is. So you should have a collection that only has TV shows, a collection that only has movies, and so on. Within each collection, everything needs to be organized correctly.

But did you try another port like 32402? Sometimes the port is already occupied and you need to try a different one.

You seem to know a lot about PLEX.... My question is, does it transcode by itself? I thought it did, but once I tried to play movies on my IPAD, it couldn't. I had to convert them first then add them to my library. Is it because my computer is old? Does that even matter? Is PLEX the best media server available?
Yeah, I recently installed Plex with the idea of using it to feed content through my XBox. However, none of my MKVs would play at all that way. Played fine on any of my other PCs via plex, but no go on the XBox.
Plex works fine for me either locally or over the Internet including the app on my Galaxy S4 and serenity for android on my android stick computer. You must have something set up wrong. Depending on the playback client you use plex will transcode as necessary.
Plex will transcode automatically, but it depends on the front end. If there is a front end, such as the Home Theater, Android, and so forth, it should transcode for files that are not friendly for the front end. If it isn't, check your settings on the PMS and the front end.

I don't recall there being an Xbox front end, and thus I'm assuming there is not. So if you're trying to play on it, you're doing to be using the DNLA feature of the PMS. This means you're dependent on what files and file specifications the device can play. Unfortunately, the Xbox, at least the xbox 360, is very limited on what files it can play, and an MKV is not one them. I have SmartTV that has DNLA. I can only play some of the files with Plex when using DNLA.

I have my 360 playing .mkv files just fine after adding SHARK to my PLEX Server...
Can you elaborate about adding SHARK?

Thanks,

David

I have been using Plex for quite some time to stream to my phone. Knowing my library I have been able to "work around" this issue in using PlexApp and also using the android app but I recently started to share my library to people that aren't familiar with this stuff.

I have my TV Series in the following convention:

H:\Public Video\TV Series\Series Name\Season ##\s##e## - episode name.mkv which I think is a pretty standard naming convention. I have the Plex Server pointed to H:\Public Video\TV Series for TV Series in the library.

Also in the Season ## folder there is a metadata folder created by MediaCenterMaster or MediaBrowser or Plex (they all scan my library) as well as banner.jpg and folder.jpg.

With that background information in mind, If one were to go to TV Series in myPlex or or the android app, the default is to have it organized not by series name but rather by rather just random of maybe alphabetically. One can click on the "Folder" option which organizes by series name but does not show folder.jpg but rather just a generic folder icon.

There's two things I am trying to do. First is have clients default to the Folder option and the second is to show folder.jpg rather than just a generic folder icon in the library. I have tried to look through the settings in myPlex and in Plex Server but have not found anyplace to change this. Did I miss something or is there something else I need to do?

BTW, I use Media Browser on my HTPC and it defaults to this option automatically which is pretty sweet.
Shark does have a pretty good solution to the codec issue while maintaining Live/Recorded TV in WMC too if that is important to you.

You can also just install LAV directly on the host machine.
I must be doing something wrong!

I used Assassin's Guide and everything is great, but I added a hard wired XBOX in my GYM to act as an extender. I use Media Browser and WMC, and have everything converted to MKV using Make MKV. I can't get ANY of the MKV files to play on the XBOX. I installed LAV.

To make this work I started converting MKV files into MP4s, which the XBOX seems to handle okay. But I realize it's pretty silly to have to use HANDBRAKE to downsize a 25 GB Blu Ray MKV file just to watch it while I sweat!!!

I then added PLEX for the sole purpose of using it for the XBOX. It seems to work okay but if I could get MKV files to work that would be best.

Get a GTV device and install Serenity for Android Plex Client. Done.

(Also, you can go the MB3 route too now that the beta product is nearly perfect.)
Is MB3 ready?
It's not official but the server and the classic seem pretty stable in beta... and they also have a FREE android and a FREE iOS app for smart phones and tablets available now too.

The "theater" product is not out yet, but sammy should like it. Madvr is working (for me) with HD overlay , LAV audio and such... no more external player biggrin.gif There is still a lot of work to do on it, but clearly the Dev team for MB3 is working hard and doing good things.
