Subwoofer Recommendations Requested

Hello Friends:
The time has come for me to purchase a new subwoofer. My Velodyne SPL10BV now only emits a buzzing sound. I purchased it used in 2006, and it's been working great. However, as this sub is most likely close to ten years old, I think it's better to get a new sub rather than sink $230 + shipping to have this one repaired.

Here's what I'm working with:

Fixed:
- My room is 14' x 18 x 9.5' (just under 2400 cu ft.)
- I live in an apartment building, so earth rattling bass is not needed
- My setup consists of 2x B&W 602 S2, 1x B&W LCR S2, 2x B&W VM1, and a Rotel RSX-1550
- Budget: >$800 ideally; $1000 max
- Mostly used for Home Theatre/Television viewing.

Variable:
- Physical size: I'd prefer it to be about the same size as current subwoofer
- I prefer a front firing sub rather than downward firing, so I don't disturb my downstairs neighbor, and so that I don't have to spend another $75/100 on fancy Auralux (seems like that money is better spent on the sub anyway).
- Class D amplification to keep size down.

With the exception of my A/V receiver; I've been out of the audio game for quite some time. The only sub I have thought about was either another Velodyne, or a friend maybe selling a B&W PV1 within my budget. The PV1 looks great, but I haven't seen many "real world" reviews outside of magazine sites. As my friend is cross country, a audition is not convenient.

Thanks in advance, I look forward to your recommendations!

^^^

front firing vs. down firing will have zero difference on what you downstairs neighbor hears, and fwiw, adding a subdude won't change that (although it may eliminate any vibrations that are caused by having the sub decoupled from the floor)..

thanks for the quick reply! as my building is pre-war, it's pretty solid construction, but I worry a downward firing sub will cause them to feel excess vibration. is my concern unwarranted? can you please explain if so?

Anyone have any info on the Golden Ear Force Field 3? Looks cool, and I think the company was founded by someone from Definitive Tech.

Exceptional value because on sale right now. Supposed to be comparable to the venerable Hsu VTF3 Mark 3.

You can always turn it down.

The GoldenEar is on sale? How is that possible? I thought their distribution model was dealers only. That being the case I assume the dealer decides what, if any, discount is applied, wouldn't they?

wwinkler: what's this sale you speak of & where can I get in on it?

Thanks shadyj, but that sub is much too large for my space. Great deal though.

SVS SB12-NSD- pretty small, according to SVS' frequency chart it's flat to 23hz. Pretty good for a small sealed box sub.

What's your time frame? If you can wait 6 months and save $300 JL audio is coming out with a new 10" "budget" sub that MSRP's just above your stated budget, but street price might be closer (I'm not sure what it will actually go for), if size is that big of an issue. A bigger box will get you much more performance per $, however.

That SVS looks great! I'm worried that it's underpowered though. My current sub peaks at 1000W and the model up SB13 Plus is 1000W as well. I worry that 400W peak is not going to be enough.

When I was a kid I had JL Audio subwoofers in my car! They were awesome. I didn't realize they had made the switch to home audio. That E-110 looks like exactly what I need. Q3 is soooo far away, perhaps I should get something used, sell it in 6 months, and then get this JL.

A dude at the HiFi shoppe by me suggested the Pinnacle Sub8 and another suggested the Paradigm SE Sub. I've had no experience with either, but my cousin's Paradigm Sub died within 3 years. Any one had experience with these pieces?

400 watts isn't the SB12-NSD's peak; it's the RMS. SVSound don't publish peak specs for their amplifiers.

SVS 45 day trial, cost you return shipping and/or get full price to trade up to the SB13 plus.

Velodyne Optimum 10 in cherry is on sale for $909 and the 12 in cherry for $1049 if that's of interest to you.

So it looks like it's coming down to the Rythmik f12 or the JL Fathom 110. I like the size of the JL and am not worried about getting below 25hz. And I might even get a sub dude. Can I make a subdude? I actually have some purple auralex sitting around.
