No, I did not check it; took it as carry-on baggage. But it was done 'naked', i.e., not in the box (Mark is going to mail the the empty box). I had a large heavy duty canvas shopping bag, the inside of which is almost the exact girth of the VW1000. [Not sure if you remember, but I pleaded on the Forum for someone who had a 1000 to pull a string tightly around its midsection to let me know the circumference; about 51".] So I (actually 'we', Mark and I) slide it into the bag bottom down (I first put my dirty clothes at the bottom of the bag to give it some padding). The top (lens) end protruded above the top of the bag, so Mark lent me a bath towel to tuck over it. The 20" width was fortunately narrow enough to go through the TSA xray machine (just barely), and the guys pulled it aside and gave it a serious look, but then waved it on without ever asking me anything about it. On the plane, it fit neatly into the overhead bin (with me keeping a careful eye that no one plopped anything down on top of it); lifting the 45 lb monster was a bit of a challenge, but the guy sitting next to me lent a stabilizing hand. I used an old detachable 'wheelie' to get it through the airports, and then onto BART to home.
I admit it was a crackpot idea, but it went amazingly smoothly with no hitches.
