Marantz SR7005 wont let me select some surround modes

Thanx for your help ahead of time...

I have had this "problem" since I bought the SR7005 and I have gone through countless trials & errors in both the AVR & the BD player settings, have looked in all places for information & as I mentioned, read the manual several times but to no avail. I also waited until my new cables (1.4) came in to go through the motions again before I started a new thread.

The Problem is that when the AVR is set to BD (through a 1.4 HDMI cable) and I'm watching a movie (Blu-ray,) it wont let me cycle through all the available surround modes for this unit & especially anything under the "DTS" banner or the "Dolby" banner... It will only let me toggle between... multi ch stereo, dolby vs, auto, stereo, multi ch in, multi ch in PLIIz, Multi +dolby ex, multi in +PLIIxMV and multi in +PLIIxMS... basically the surround modes under "Multi Channel In" and at one point after running Audyssey & tweaking some settings to my liking I only had "sterero" "Multi ch in" & "dolby vs."

SOME EXTRA INFO:

-My BD player is a Sony S580, connected through a high speed 1.4 3D HDMI cable.

-When I depress info on the BD's remote while playing a Blu ray with DTS HD audio the screen says "AUDIO DTS-HD."

-While playing the BD I go into the AVR settings & set to decode "DTS only" & the audio playback stops.

-When the AVR is set to TV (My cable box connected to the AVR through an optical cable only -TV doesnt support ARC-) It "decodes" most of the surround modes if not all... including DTS which coming from Yamaha was weird to me since the source needed to be a DTS in order for my old AVR to display the "DTS" symbol on its display.

-When the AVR is set to Ipod it also "decodes" most of the surround modes if not all, just as if it was the cable box.

I've found this information on here, concerning my problem (or similar) but it didnt help me:

In the above case, you have the BDP set to LPCM so the BDP decodes the audio and passes it to the 7005. Set the BDP to "bitstream" with secondary audio set to OFF and it will pass the compressed DD/DTS audio to the 7005 to decode, although in the end it doesn't matter which device does the decoding as the audio quality will be the same either way.

^^^

the quote from jd basically explains it...

depending on the input source format, not all surround modes are available... given a specific format, there are surround modes that don't "make sense" for you to be able to use...

also, some bd players in the past (pioneer, you know who you are) forced matrxing in the player with certain formats, which caused many headaches for users trying to apply a 7 channel (or more) matrixing scheme...

there used to be a table in the manuals for equipment that laid this out, i'm not sure if that is still in the 7005 manual or not... look there, it will be towards the end of the manual if it exists...

I fully understand that concept... which is the reason I implied that I can set the surround mode to "DTS NEO:6 Cinema" when listening to music on my ipod; that definitely doesnt make sense to me... especially when I'm trying to set that same surround mode when watching a blu-ray & I cant... which is part of the problem.

Im new to this brand but my old Yamaha V2095 would let me run all the surround modes across the board (except DTS & DD programs -due to obvious reasons-) regardless of the selected input; at the time I thought it was kinda "stupid" because obviously I dont want to watch/listen to "Saving Private Ryan" in "Bottom Line " Jazz club mode... but due to this problem I'm actually all for it if it's going to make my life easier.

EDIT: As far as the table... there's one on the manual. It's very complex due to all the possible settings, & multi channel set ups, wether Audyssey's turned on or not and all types of ish, etc.

Sonic,

The response from jdsmoothie pretty much solved things up for me.
What I did once I read his post, I went home and in the video menu of the PS3, I set everything to bistream (I did it before but there was one missing).

After I did that, the SR7005 let me choose which surround mode to use.

Hey Marco, thanks for your response, however, I dont use a PS3 as my primary BD.

I havent found anything that says "bitstream" on the BD audio settings... Here's a quick rundown of the settings under "AUDIO SETTINGS":

1. Audio (HDMI) -Set the output type for the audio signal from HDMI-
^Possible setting for this is "auto" or "pcm." It's on "auto"

2.DSD output mode -For SACD- I think this is irrelevant for me.

3.BD audio MIX setting -Set wether to mix interactive audio and output-
^On or off... it's set to "on"

4. Dolby Digital -Set the dolby digital output signal from DIGITAL OUT-
^Downmix PCM or Dolby digital... it's set to "dolby digital"

5. DTS -^see above (DD) but for DTS-
^Downmix PCM or DTS... it's set to "DTS"

6. DTS Neo:6 -Sets the dts neo:6 function for audio output from hdmi-
^It could be set to "music," "cinema," or "off" it's set to "cinema"

7. Audio DRC -Set the sound effect when playing a BD or DVD-
^Could b seet to auto, on or off... it's set to "auto"

8. Downmix -Set whether to apply dolby surround to the output audio signal-
^Options are "surround" & "sterro" it's on "surround."

Ive messed around with various combinations of these settings to no avail... if anybody have any other suggestions please lmk, thanks.

Hey man, just came in here to share that I "fixed" my problem & read your feedback... thanks a million, however, that wasnt my "problem" though it was a silly thing as well.

I was so used to my Yamaha AVR that I overlooked reading the manual for the BD player because I was 100% sure it had to be this Marantz AVR...

Anyways, I picked up the BD's manual and figured out the aforementioned audio setting #3 (BD audio Mix setting) which I had set to "on" was supposed to be on "off."

[BD Audio MIX Setting]
[On]: Outputs the audio obtained by mixing
the interactive and secondary audio to the
primary audio.
[Off]: Outputs the primary audio only. Select
this to output HD audio signals to an AV
amplifier (receiver).

Nevertheless, thanks everybody!!!
