How to get Comcast HD DVR of choice?

Thread Starter
just moved to an area where Comcast will be my cable provider and would like an HD DVR. I went into their office today and asked for the Motorola DCX3400 (i.e. the latest and greatest), and they brought out an older model that was clearly used by a heavy smoker/pet owner. I pointed it out to the lady behind the counter, and she just blew the dust off and tried to hand it back, I walked out of the front door. Basically, my biggest gripe with using an old DVR is the lag time surfing the channel guide and rapidly surfing through the channels.

I called Comcast's national number (which routed me to my regional office in Knoxville) and asked for the same model. Again, no luck. How do I get the hardware of my choice with this provider, and what are my other options?

Buy a DCX3400 on eBay (Is this even legal, and will it work)?

Buy a Tivo Premiere XL (Is the Tivo interface better than Comcast's)?

Build an HTPC with a CableCard slot (Not really the option I prefer).

Satellite isn't an option at my new residence.

Try and try again. I went to three different comcast pay centers for my first box till i found the one i wanted. Second time none of the service centers had one so I called 1800comcast and complained and the sent one via UPS and it was my responsibilty to return thr older gray box I was using. Just takes alot of persistence to get the one u want from them.

All you can do is keep going back and try getting another unit.

Nope, won't work. No US cableco will activate a box they don't supply you with, unless it's a consumer CableCARD device, like a TiVo or PC w/CC slot.

A matter of opinion, but generally speaking most who try a TiVo like them better.

Can be done, but even after you get it working, it requires ongoing maintenance, just like any computer.

AFAIK, DCX3501-M is the most advanced model and with the highest HD capacity at the time of this post. Please correct me if I'm wrong though. This model supposedly upscales and outputs in 1080p, unlike DCX3400's maximum 1080i native output. Does this equate to better picture? I sure hope so as I'm expecting one soon. As long as it outputs closer to Blu-ray Disc's quality, I'm happy.

I did online chat, spoke with Comcast's 800# for countless of times, visited 4 local branches over 2 states to try to score this newest model, no one could give me an ETA for it, let alone gave me one - with the exception of Nashua NH office which actually had the DCX3501 right there (note the omission of -M). I dared not accept it as using an out-of-state DVR that communicates with a different headend from my home base will render the unit unable to receive premium channels. Mind you, basic digital HD channels will be displayed just fine, it's premium channels like HBO & Starz that won't.

My advice to you is that Google the contact info of the Customer Service Personnel of the Comcast Corporate Office. He should in turn notify your regional Comcast Executive Officer, who in turn should notify their Field Supervisor to deliver the box to you (provided that it's in stock). Your mileage may vary though. Getting a specific box shouldn't be this hard. Comcast is pushing clients to FiOS no doubt.
