I would say: Patience! I don't swing at the first pitch unless it's RIGHT down the middle! Starting off 1-0 is SO much better than 0-1. Statistics show it's a big difference.
And don't be shy about messing with sliders. I gladly raised Human Contact; Human Power; etc all the way!! Oh - and I lowered the CPU Pitch Speed all the way, too.
Once I started doing too well (unrealistically well), I just started notchin' 'em down. Just find a sweet spot. Oh - and don't be too quick with your changes. Go 3-5 games between changes to sliders. Baseball's the kind of sport where you need a decent sampling.
I also use the outfield camera, with right-handed pitchers, and a custom camera (same as Outfield but left side) when there's a left-handed pitcher.
Be patient, watch closely, and when you DO get ahead in the count, see what pitch he's most confident in (it changes throughout the game), and be ready for that pitch and lay into the power button! Good luck.
