Indiana Jones Trilogy - Page 41

Any word on the individual releases? Jurassic Park will be available separately in a few weeks, I suppose it's only a matter of time before Indy is.

I don't think they ever sold the Indy films separately on DVD. May keep that trend with Blu. This is Lucasfilm and Paramount after all.

I got #2 at Blockbuster for ten or so, as an off-rental.

This seems only fair, as most people consider the film to be a #2 biggrin.gif

The Indy DVDs have sold separately for several years now....as did original Star Wars for a while.

Hmmm... must not have been looking hard enough. When I went to the store, I always just saw the boxed set of the Indy series available. Hopefully, the individual Blu-ray's will be coming shortly. There's no way in hell I'm paying for Crystal Skull!
Just want raiders and last crusade, the other two can die in a fire. Local blockbuster is going out of business but no luck today. No way am I buying the box set.

I'm way out of the loop.

You guys who hate the color of the Blu-ray seen this?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RAIDERS-OF-THE-LOST-ARK-35MM-LPP-PRINT-1981-OUTSTANDING-CONDITION-/190808893255 (only $1500 at time of writing)

I noticed that too. They're just random scans of the print, but...damn. Perhaps the colour timing of the new transfer wasn't as revisionist as first thought...
That's pretty funny, after reading most of this thread.
Link no longer up but I had seen it earlier. I don't think those scans can be trusted at all as who knows what they were captured on and how the color temperature of the bulb warmed things up. There are other prints from the same seller that also have warm, overly yellow scans--

Nope. CS is a very enjoyable film. I watched the box set a few weeks ago and CS is much better than I remember. And TOD is MUCH WORSE than I remember. Wow the movie is so bad. Between the whining woman and annoying little boy I just couldn't take it. The story is not as good and doesn't have a sense of adventure like the rest.

CS is a nice addition to the series. I love it.

Raiders 10
Last Crusade 10
Crystal Skull 9
Temple Of Crap-sorry-i mean Doom 6

That's exactly how I rate them too. Maybe I'm not even sure which one I prefer between Raiders and Crusade. Harrison Ford and Sean Connery had the best chemistry smile.gif I like how they went from WWII to the Cold War/Area51 stuff in CS... That seemed very logical in fact due the actors getting older of course. But there are a few annoying things in CS, mostly (for me) too much CGI, for instance the bugs were totally unconvincing. And yes the fridge too tongue.gif. What made the previous ones great was that most of what was happening on screen looked real. Even when it didn't it was enjoyable because it was "old-fashioned" cinema, which was the point of the whole franchise. CS somewhat lacked the "old adventure movie" vibe. And Shia Labeouf might be annoying to some, but never as much as the kid from Temple Of Doom... To me Temple Of Doom is to Indiana Jones what The Lost World is to Jurassic Park. Christopher Nolan was worried about finishing a trilogy, with Spielberg it seems the second film is the problem wink.gif.

I'm planning to rent out these Blu-Rays soon but I have a question about Raiders.

I have heard that in this specific isolated release that the colour temptation is best set to 'normal' since the actual transfer is quite warm already. For general BD watching I have my colour temp set to warm anyway, but I have heard conflicting reports that in this very rare occasion that its ideal to use the 'normal' option. Can anyone shed any light on this?

The BD of Raiders is too yellow, IMO, and is the biggest downside to this "restoration." Otherwise it's certainly a pq improvement over the DVD. Look at screencaps here http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/comparison.php?cID=1273#auswahl

compared to Temple of Doom http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/comparison.php?cID=1274#auswahl

and Last Crusade http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/comparison.php?cID=1275#auswahl

and Crystal Skull http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/comparison.php?cID=1276#auswahl

to see what you'll be dealing with when it comes to Raiders.

To me Raiders is one of the best 3 BD's ever released. Due to the restoration (the gamma, the contrast, brightness, everything it's just PERFECT, without a single overexposure), encoding and anamorphic starter material. The optical scene at the end it's a reference for this kind of shots.

I did have to laugh when I watched Raiders (on Blu) for the first time in years and saw a very young Doc Ock in the opening scenes! smile.gif

I absolutely hated it the first time I saw it (Blu-ray via Netflix). When I watched it a 2nd time as part of watching the Quadrilogy when I got the Blu-ray set, I kind of liked it. The 4 movies are not equal, but they each have their own good and bad aspects relative to each other. If you take them as 1940s serial type films, then their weaknesses are part of their charm.

Lucas' influence on Crystal Skull was its ultimate downfall. He also seems to have a small rodent fetish too. biggrin.gif

Temple of Doom has a wonderfully energetic quality to it and the John Williams score is awesome. It's a direct homage to the Cary Grant classic Gunga Din and the old 50's graphic horror comics (like elements of Raiders).
I do like Temple but it's madder than a box of frogs. It's bookended by two of the silliest action scenes that Senor Spielbergo has ever committed to film. The music is terrific though, I agree.

I dig the first half of Crystal Skull, the car chase in particular. It feels like proper smashmouth old-school Indy, especially the gag with Dr. Jones climbing in one window and out the other of a moving car. But when they reach the jungle it gets real silly real quick, and Indy's got **** all to do at the end. At least he told Marion to shut her eyes at the end of Raiders, we don't even get that in Crystal Skull.

Raiders is a stone cold classic, plot holes be damned. And I heart Last Crusade because it's so funny, the addition of Connery was a masterstroke.
Spielberg always said who better to be Indy's dad than James Bond. biggrin.gif

I just do not like the explanation in Crusade of Indy's past and his reason for turning into an adventurer during the prologue. He's supposed to be enigmatic... you don't flat out ruin that mysterious part of an iconic character like Indiana Jones in the first 15 minutes!!!! The joke about him being named after the dog... gaaaahh!! And the bad guy's ultimate fate is too much like Raiders. Those parts hurt the film, sorry to say.

The stuff with River Phoenix is fun, but it does tick off too many boxes for such a short sequence: He gets the whip! He gets the scar! He becomes scared of snakes! And you mentioned the revelation about Indy's adopted moniker. Between that and Temple of Doom being set before Raiders, I'd say that Lucas was obsessed with prequels waaaaay before the Star Wars ones showed up.

Not to mention the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles that were being televised at around the same time. Just didn't have the same snap like Raiders. Way too kid friendly. But, again, that's Lucas for you.

I can't say that I've ever considered Indiana Jones to be that "enigmatic" or "mysterious."

Conversely, I would call Batman those things, yet we've seen his origin story told countless times over.

Last Crusade was released in 1989. The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles ran from 1992-1993.
