A friend asked and I am also interested. So many sites now seem to full of pop up adds and offer no content. If this isn't the right place to ask could someone point me to a reference I could use? Thanks

Audiogalaxy

You have to run some of their software in order to use the service. But its fairly nice, and some the indepenent bands they have on there are pretty good.

bearshare.com

You also have to download the software.

Bearshare is part of the gnutella network isn't? I've found that gnutella is very unrealiable. 90% of the time, you cant get the files you find.

Audiogalaxy, vitrually every file that I have found, I've been able to download. Though I have found a few mislabel ones (The Cars did not do Angel is the Centerfold..).

morpheus (musiccity.com)and kazaa are good too - get spyware free copies too!

Please support the artists you like. These are great promotional tools for artists despite what the RIAA says. I have found lots of new groups to watch and my support with a purchase of their CD helps ensure that a future album is coming.

**disclaimer**
I do not support the downloading or distribution of illegal material. If you do not own the artists CD you should not have in your possesion the mp3 file.

Now with this out of the way. The best way to obtain mp3 files is still news group access, and Forte Agent is still one of the best software packages available (IMHO) for this.

Napster was the best IMO, but those days are over. Morpheus came pretty close but now there new software and servers suck, IMO. After Morpheus I switched to Kazaa, but after learning about the spyware, I ran adware to remove D3B, cydoor and all the other crap included with Kazaa. After I did a system restore I tried Kazaa Lite, which is just like Kazaa but no spyware, BonziBuddy, popups or any ads period. I fully recommend Kazaa Lit, but as always make sure you have an antivirus program that updated and possibably a firewall just to be safe.
