budget small spare bedroom dedicated theater build

Hello Everyone, First post here, probably a little late, but have been busy building. Well it's been 3 long months since I started crawling this forum, learning everything I could, and stealing as many good ideas from you guys as I could find (for those of you I blatantly stole from, thanks & sorry

I guess this all started because I wanted a bigger TV, then figured I'd do something with one of the spare bedrooms that the Mrs. and I don't use. The largest one was 10'4" by 14' which created it's own set of problems. We don't have basements for the most part in Southern California, so we had to make due. Our goal was to do this pretty cheap, and I'd say we did pretty well.

Carpet gets installed tomorrow, followed by some touch ups here and there and installing the projector and such.

But below is the progress up to this point, There are some fantastic small theaters on here, but it can be hard to find alot of samples that are this small, so hopefully this might help someone with space constraints see that it can be done, as proven by the others on here who've done it.

Equipment list:
Mitsubishi HC4000 12' throw onto 100" 16x9 doable screen.
Denon AVR-1712
Pioneer FS-51 Towers with matching center and surrounds with Polk rears.
Dayton RS 12" sub with 300w bash amp in custom enclosure (haven't built yet)
Palliser Sequelle seats

And it begins with a tape square (ended up moving screen to other wall)

Then comes the wood (there would be alot more of these trips. a little advice buy the best and straightest wood you can, the savings on the cheap **** cost HUGE amounts of time in the long run)

Getting carpet and base pulled up.

Hanging Soffit Ledgers.

Front window. had to go eventually.

Framing columns.

Other side columns.

Starting the stage.

Windows Gone!

Screen lights

Side Lights

Riser getting built (had to go back and do cross braces later)

Got the speakers, they were cheap but I'm not an audiophile and think they sound great.

Test fitting the pallisers. 3 in the back 2 in the front. seating is at 12.5' from the back row and 8.5' from the front row. The backs wont have room to recline but I can deal with that over the fronts being too close to the screen. We knew this going in. Got all 5 in new condition on craigslist for $500 for the lot. and the guy was only 3 miles away.

No one said this wasn't a messy job.

Drywalls all hanged and speakers wired up. sounds good to me.

Closet concession stand. Not quite done yet but getting there.

The carpet we are using got from a remnant warehouse apparently from disneyland tower of terror. (I'm not sure haven't been there in years, and never trust sales people so who knows.)

Preliminary painting is done.

Molding for the room.

molding is hung.

More molding.

Playing with panorama iphone ap. Here it is as it stands.

And thats all we've got for now. It's been a long process and many thanks to all the people who've shared there ideas, and techniques on this forum. Really priceless stuff on here.

Looks like a great job on a small space!

Did you do any acoustic treatments to the room, or are you going to see how it sounds and then figure out if it needs anything done?

I am asking because we are about to drywall our project and I am trying to figure out what needs to be done on the line of acoustic treatments. We are not audiophiles but I want it to sound as good as possible (within reason) since we are going to the trouble of building to room in the first place.

Nice work!

Looks great! I am currently working on an even smaller room (10.5' x 11.5') so this is giving me lots of ideas for paint colors and others such things.

I have a question. How far from the walls are your screen and side lights? I like the wash that they give.

Nick in Manitou: Honestly I am not doing any accoustic treatments to start, and I've run sound through the speakers, and it sounds good to me. I will tell you the room will need bass traps, as just the bass from the speakers pools around the back wall under the soffit really bad. I may go back in the future and add accoustic panels between the chair rail and the base board, but we are playing it by ear right now.

aaustin: The side lights are 6 inches from the wall to the center of the lense, and the screen lights are 9 inches. I'm just using the cheap adjustable lights from home depot, I think there around $12 or so a piece but they work well. Thats a super small room, how many seats and how big of a screen are you planning on going with?

Thanks for the info!

I am going with a 92" 16:9 screen. One row of four seats. There's more info in my build thread.

Aaustin: Your room is looking good. Your lucky to have parents that let you experiment with home remodeling at your age.

So had the carpet installed friday, followed by touch up paint, and painting the doors on Saturday. Sunday got the seats back in, and made and mounted the speaker grills to the columns. Got the screen finished as well but it's still sitting in the garage.

Carpet installed:

Trim and touch up paint done:

Got the seats in:

speaker grills installed.

Front Speaker Grills installed. (and yes that wire will get hidden)

Front Pano.

Back Pano (with a little distortion accidentally from the pano software)

Thanks! Yeah my mom trusts me

Your room is looking really nice! I love the carpet. Thanks for sharing these pictures.

By the way what speakers are those? Pioneer SP-FS51?

Aaustin: Thats great your mom trusts you like that. And I couldn't be happier with the carpet. The speakers are the Pioneer SP-FS51 along with matching center and surrounds, with some polk rears. I'm not an audiophile by any means, but they sound great, and run pretty loud (haven't even turned them up that much yet). All and all for less than $350 for all 7 speakers brand new I couldn't be happier.

Got the Screen UP. Industrial velcro for the upholstered edges doesn't work real will, gonna throw some small brad nails in there.

^looking good! what's the dimensions of the riser? I have a similar sized room and i'm debating on whether or not to add a riser....decisions, decisions....

I have to go measure it if you want to know exactly let me know. it's aproximately 8' wide by just around 4-5' deep. If your going to do a second row of seating the riser really is a must.

Awesome theater! I love small bedroom-to-theater conversions and what you've created is truly special. Enjoy it for years to come!

The men in brown delivered the HC4000 and denon 1712 to my office this morning. Can't wait to get everything set up tonight and be pretty much finished.
