The system still seems to be buggy right now.

this is a pretty big deal if true!!
http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/19/report-wii-u-dies-if-power-cut-during-massive-firmware-update/

We'll get this out of the way first: Do not unplug or turn off any console when it is performing a firmware update.

Unplugging the Wii U during the day-one firmware update might brick the console for good, LA Times film and video game industry journalist Ben Fritz reports on Twitter. Fritz says he unplugged his Wii U 15 minutes into the update, when the progress bar said it would take two hours to finish, and his console is now completely busted. There was no "cancel" option, Fritz says.

A few people on Twitter have chimed in with their own update horror stories, with one saying the connection timed out during the update and another claiming Nintendo support told him to unplug the Wii U for 15 seconds, both scenarios ending with bricks. The Wii U's sizable update will take a while to process, of course expanding the chances of something going wrong. Nintendo has not confirmed the update's actual size.

Nintendo of America warns Wii U owners, "please do not power down or unplug your system while downloading updates. Doing so may cause damage to your Wii U."

In the spirit of Fritz's Twitter avatar, remember: If you unplug your Wii U during a firmware update, you're gonna have a bad time.

This is 100% normal with all systems. Cut the power during a firmware update, it dies, pretty simple.

Now if it does so while downloading and not installing... That is stupid, but where did he see a 2 hours left to go? There was no time remaining counter when I ran the update...
that is not true, the other 2 systems don't brick permanently..
Hopefully by the time my son opens his Christmas morning some of the bugs will be worked out. I did go ahead and update the firmware before I wrapped it up.
Maybe it's just me, but the OS seems way zippier than it was the first day. Not sure how that's possible. It's still not as fast as I'd like it to be, but at least I'm no longer waiting 15 seconds every time I open something.

Another thing about the OS I realized puts me off a bit is how sterile and generic the app-loading screens are. They're all just blank white silent screens with the app's logo in a tiny box. I don't particularly care (hey, if it helps things load faster...), but it makes the OS feel incomplete, not to mention un-Nintendo-like, compared to the little custom tunes and animations that accompany similar screens on the 3DS and original Wii.
It's just a hunch, but I have a feeling we'll get an OS update within the next couple months, addressing things like:

  • Text hanging off the edge on some TVs
  • Bricking if power is lost during an update
  • Disc drive not spinning down when not in use
  • Various UI tweaks, like Audio option is hidden under "TV" & confusing Friends list notifications
  • Speed up interface

I hope all of these can be addressed via the OS.
I just don't understand how this is so rough around the edges when they've had so many years to work on it.
Eh, aren't launches always kind of a mess? I feel like the Xbox360 only became a reliable console like three years ago. And this is Nintendo's first "modern" console, arguably, so I'm not surprised they're struggling a bit extra with it. They're not only new at it, they're also obstinate about a lot of it. Putting so many integral functions in a giant Day One patch was a totally stupid idea.
My system timed-out twice during the update last night (just like the Chicago Bears). In each case I waited a few moments and navigated back to the system icon and restarted the firmware download. After the download/upload was completed all is working fine. Tech today is so complex I guess I give new hardware a pass. On the other hand noobs or parents trying to set this hardware up for kids can really get frustrated. I thought the N64 launch (only two games available) and the Sega Saturn (secret release that no one knew about) were the bench marks for poor system launches.

Does anyone know if epic Mickey has voice over work? The first one didn't and it was a big turnoff.
My Mii name is Teachinator if anyone is interested in building up their friends list.

Avoid Epic Mickey 2... Unless a patch comes out

Frame rate is horrible... HORRIBLE. Every time you use the paint brush or thinner the frame rate drops way below 30.
In surround mode the center channel doesn't work during some of the cut scenes instead it moves to my left surround speaker.
You can only play on the gamepad when you are Mickey. The Pro Controller won't work and the Wiimote works for Oswald only in 2 player Co-op

A very lazy port and a game that feels unfinished.

VERY DISSAPOINTING

Side Note:
For every game I would recommend using the Miiverse feature for the game you want more information on. It is a great way to see if a game is good

Thanks for being the guinea pig on Epic Mickey 2. I had it pre-ordered, but cancelled at the last moment because of reviews for the game on the other systems. Now all I have is NintendoLand (great) and Nano Assault Neo (pretty good). But the Sonic racer should arrive tomorrow, so I hope that is a better port.

How do you use the Miiverse feature for game info? I haven't done much with that yet.

Not trying to start anything. Just wondering how it could be terribly slow if it is a Quad?

They took one look at an early dev kit and never looked at Nintendo again. They also suck at optimizing code to run well.

Valve and Gearbox both talk about how the Wii U is more powerful than the PS3 and 360.

Select the Miiuniverse icon (green silhouettes) then Communities.

So I noticed that even with the Wii U audio output set to "surround," the main menu, Nintendoland and NSMBWU all just put out two-channel audio. In other words, the only way for me to actually get surround audio with my setup (at least with those games) is to switch the audio output to "stereo" and use PLII...
Can anyone else verify this? Does Wii U seriously spit out stereo wrapped in a surround stream that contains four silent channels, therefore breaking PLII compatability? That is a nasty flaw right there.

I have to imagine it can do straight 7.1 PCM over HDMI? There's no way this is just a stereo system....I refuse to believe it.

I have no idea but I can tell you that Call of Duty, Super Mario sound fantastic. You must enable surround from the settings menu as it is not autodetected. Perhaps that has been the problem for some people?

There is 100% something wrong with the way Epic Mickey 2 sounds though. It's almost as if the front soundstage was put in the rear and vice versa. Very off putting.

Enjoying the system right now as it really fits my current lifestyle. But....4 hours to download a game than another hour to install it? Nintendo needs to iron that jank out.

Funny, Everything is getting pumped out of my surround left not front left. Did you purchase retail or Eshop? I wouldn't reccomend that anyone purchase this game right now. Wish I had seen your post before I excitedly pulled the trigger. Sounds Goofy, no pun intended. I can deal with the slowdown but the sound is borderline disorienting.

My Onkyo says its Multich PCM. However, when putting Mario into PLII I don't seem to hear much if any activities from the rear. Interesting development, ZombieU sounds awesome, full surround there though.
Leave it in straight Multi PCM mode. Do you get audio out of your center and surrounds? Or is the audio exclusively Left/Right, meaning 4-6 empty, but locked in, channels?

Both the PS3 and 360 have made this noob sauce mistake before, but usually only in video apps and it usually gets fixed down the road.

Hey Wii U: if a game is stereo, then it's stereo. That's fine. Don't lock it in to a surround stream with a bunch of empty channels though. Then we can't use PLII on it worth a damn.

This console sounds more and more just simply broken the more I hear.

That certainly seems to be the case. In the audio settings menu, you can play a surround test tone that indeed plays a tone from each of my speakers in succession. Playing NSMBWU though, or just staying in the main menu, I can confirm no sound is coming out of anything but the L/R channels.

I Googled around a bit and found people saying that third-party games seem to have proper multichannel audio, but Nintendo stuff so far (including the freakin' OS) didn't bother with anything but L/R audio even though they technically support "surround." Bleah.

So you're seriously telling me that the flagship games for their "next gen" system, only really support 2 channel stereo?

Not sure why a 2D sidescroller would need rear-channel audio.

So has anybody hooked up their Wii U with component cables? Curious if it does 1080P over component.

I really don't think this game would benefit from a surround track. The stereo mix is great. However, it does suck that for those people at want to "fake" it won't be able to.

I don't think the audio on this game is a deal breaker at all. The system is outstanding for what it does.

This is system is next-generation for Nintendo without a doubt. The interplay between the pad and TV is pretty remarkable. It's not going to interest everyone but it sure works for me,
post #960 of 1142
some of these issues sound like they can be worked out via the downloadable updates.

mine arrives today. Have Mario waiting for it. I'm hoping the system update download is a little quicker today than it sounds like it was on launch day with that server crunch.
