LG 50PA6500 and LG 60PA6500 Plasmas - Page 39

No sorry it's a 60"... Setting it to 52 did solve the problem.

The firmware on my set is at 03.19.05
Model is 60PA6500-UA

the 4.00.03 firmware is only good on:
60PA5500-UG
60PA550C-UG
60PA6500-UG
60PA6550-UM

They like to screw the people with the UA model.

Hi there, I just joined. I just purchased a LG 50PA6500 Plasma and wanted to know what audio setting from my sony blu-ray player would work as I don't have a receiver. I just hooked up my BD player directly to this TV via HDMI.

I noticed this TV has a pretty decent surround sound right out of the box (compared to my older LG50PG20 model), so should I choose PCM and let the TV decode the audio or should I use Bitsream and let my player decode? Sometimes I have to turn the volume on this TV up to 80+ when viewing some blu's so obviously I am doing something wrong here. Some blu's though work fine at just 40 in the volume scale.

I know nothing much about audio yet and am just getting started. Thanks!

To each his own. I'm happy with my 50" and as I said before the picture quality really comes down to the content quality. I learned how to re encode movies to 60 frames per second, giving them that fluid motion and so far I'm blown away.

My 60PA6500 is on 04.00.02 and working great so I'm locked in the struggle between "if it ain't broke don't fix it" and "ooh! new, shiny firmware".

I asked this on the LG Support site a while back:

"What are the changes in the 60PA6500 firmware: Software_File(Version_04.00.03)? I can't find details anywhere on the LG site.

I've already installed it with no issues. I was just wondering what the changes were.

Thank for your time."

And got this answer from one of the CS Reps:

"We appreciate your interest in this television. The latest update appears to be added to allow the system to operate more efficiently than previously. If you have additional questions, please contact our Customer Interactive Center at 800-243-0000.
1 DAY AGO User Name: NeilE"

"more efficiently" at power consumption is my guess. I installed the update on the day of purchase, so I wouldn't be able to have noticed any other differences in the menus or options. I've never had an issue updating firmware (bricked device or whatnot) and I've been updating on this or that since the early '90's. So, I usually just jump right in.

Hello great blog site...everyone is very informative.

I bought the LG 60PA6550 60" plasma at Costco Fountain Valley CA, on sale for $799 including a Costco 2-year extended warranty for no additional cost. Price is still available until end of Jan 2013. The 60PA6500 and 60PA6550 are identical according to LG web site.

For the price this is a great tv, so I bought two of them. It is very flexible in adjusting the picture quality, color and especially adjustable brightness. Screen reflections are visible from light sources, but mine are both in window shaded rooms so reflection is not an issue at my installations. I put a small lamp behind the tv cabinet in the 6" space from the tv to the wall behind the tv and this significantly improves the viewing comfort.

I have an old non digital Denon POA2400a-400watt stereo system, so I had to use a optical TOSlink DAC to analog RCA stereo converter between the LG tv optical Dolby digital output and my stereo preamp analog input, it's not surround sound but stereo works great now. It's a Radio Shack DAC ( $39 including power supply and 6ft optical cable ) but I had to go thru three returns to the local Radio Shack because of initial DAC converter defects.

Hi. First, I appreciate all of the info in this thread. It helped me make the decision to buy another LG Plasma, again. I got a 60PA5500 at Sears in Augusta, Maine ($799.99 + tax). There are a few more 5500's in various stores, and in the Sears supply system. Also, the 60PA6550 is available at Sam's Club in Scarboro, Maine ($838 + tax + membership). I'll repeat one bit of info which took me a couple days to figure out - The LG 60PA5500 and 60PA6500 and 60PA6550 are all the same set, spec for spec, and have the same Owners Manual. There MAY be some differences in the INPUTS/OUTPUTS on the rear/side of the set. I verified all the other specifications on the LG comparison website. My previous set was a LG 50PS60. I'm old, don't game on my TV, and won't be looking for problems. My first flat screen was a 42" EDTV several years ago. I bought and tried a Sharp Aquos LED LC60LE600U last week because I read a lot of CRAP about the LED units. It suc_ed, so I returned it and got another LG plasma. I'm looking forward to enjoying the 60" HDTV.

Are you referring to the 50" or the 60" model for $699?
Costco is selling the 60" model at their Fountain Valley CA store for $799 until the end of January 2013, this is including a 2 year warranty .

Good buy!

I'm on the last day of my 30 days to price match down from $799 but it is the 60PA5500 at Fry's not the 6500 so no go. mad.gif Plus it's in-store only so they would probably get me there as well.

Actually - just re-read the "holiday" return policy and I have until Jan 24th so the hunt for a lower price continues! smile.gif

I read the same thing but I also read that there is a difference with the remotes as well. If you want to post up a pic of your remote I can post up a pic of mine to compare.

First here is a way to watch movies from PC to TV with software smoothing, it works, it has different settings for the "soap opera" effect mild to strong:

The second I have successfully used to re-encode movies to 60fps or double their original frame rate and watched movies off the thumb drive:

HELP!

OK, I have a LG-50PA6500 and I get bars of snow that quickly flash on the screen like a strobe light, crackles the speakers and it only shows up every 2-6 power ups, and only when the LG BP620 Blu-ray player is plugged into HDMI3. I took the Blu-ray player back and exchanged it but it didn't help. Here's the weird part...I changed the cable and it didn't show up for 3 days so I thought it was the cable, but when I put the "bad" cable back in but changed it to HDMI2 it didn't show up for 3 days? and it doesn't show up on the PC with the PC in HDMI3? I need a GURU because this has my stumped. I just want to make sure it's not the TV so I can return it before the 30 days are up.

Thanks

ad720, My remote has no Model on the case, but it matches the one on page 30 of the Owner's Manual, listed for the PA5500/6500/6550. Is yours different from that?

Curious if anyone has tried this wall mount w/ the 60"..

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tilting-Wall-Mount-for-37-to-70-Flat-Panel-TVs/17688764

Ordered it since the price is so great- just hope it will hold this beast without it wanting to tilt forward constantly. Won't get to find out until I install everything after we move into new house on the 18th.. Drivin me nuts staring at this 60" beast in a box.

I recently purchased a Samsung 51" 530 series. I love everything about the tv, however there appears to be motion blur with the set. This was not an issue with the Panny P50U50. Can anyone tell me if anyone has experience these problems with the LG plasmas, specifically the 50PA6500?

Also, can anyone comment on the brightness of this set? I originally had Panny P50U50, but it was too dim compared to the Samsung.

I'm finding out that there truly is no perfect tv!

Thank you.

Hi, im from NewZealand. I have the 50PA6500-TF model. I got mine ex demo (ha risky i know) with 1300 hours on it. Absolutely love the picture, the plasma picture is much nicer to watch. Mine is problem free, on bluray 1080p 24 the picture is amazing! I used the cnet calibration settings and im very happy with the flesh tones and colour reproduction, although i did used settings contrast 95, brightness 48, colour 60.

Is mine the only one with frequent image retention?
If i leave a bright image up for a few minutes say, then go to black screen there is a slight ghost, but only till another image appears. Its not enough to worry, and doesnt happen during fluid viewing, ie bright scene to dark. Settings could be your issue?

Nope, mine has frequent image retention. BUT, I run the screen washer for five minutes or so and It's always gone. Very, Very happy with this set.

What are the major downsides to the LG 60PA6500? I looked at it at length at costco next to the UT50 and found I liked the Bezel design and overall look better.
Does anyone know how this set compares to a PN50A450.. which is my current dying set as far as dithering, banding (which the samsung has a lot of), IR (also a lot) and reflectiveness.. which isn't too terrible on mine but noticeable.
I recently acquired the 60PA5500. Prior to purchasing--and indeed after purchasing--I searched for differences between the 60PA5500 and 60PA6500. The LG website clearly presents erroneous information with respect to inputs on the 5500. (There's no difference.) As others have noted, all the other specs in fact appear to be identical.

Yesterday I viewed the 6500 at Best Buy and I was struck that it didn't look exactly like mine. Then I noticed what is different. The bottom edge of the bezel on the 6500 is shaped slightly differently. Once you know it's there, you can see the difference in the pics on the LG website. The bezel on the 5500 is more "square off" at the bottom corners. I think the entire bottom edge is also straighter on the 5500.
I think the bezel on the 5500 actually looks nicer than the 6500, which is indeed different on the bottom. But otherwise, I think the specs are the same in terms of pic quality.

A couple of weeks ago, I got a Sony Bravia 60" led lcd and I was super disappointed with how it looked, our previous living room TV was a Vizio 50" plasma. I tried for 2 weeks with different settings and even got a spyder calibration tool, no matter what I got I couldn't find a sweet spot where it looked as good as the Plasma. I think that if you haven't spent a lot of time watching a plasma you might think how much different could it be compared to a LED LCD set. I packed up the Sony and was going to return it, for a Samsung 60" plasma. That morning I checked the frys ad and saw that they had the LG 60PA6500 for $699, sure it didn't have any of the smart TV or 3d that the Samsung does but I wasn't really going to use them anyways. Its only 1 button push to switch to the Roku or the HTPC.

After I got home and set up the TV all I can say is Wow even before I even dug into the options it looked better than the calibrated Sony LCD. I can't wait till I get it fine tuned and calibrated.
