LG 50PA6500 and LG 60PA6500 Plasmas - Page 31

Got a LG 50PA550T (I think its 50PA5500 i US but Im not shore, some plz tell me) in exchange for my LG 50PS3000 that broke (We got a really sweet deal by law in Sweden so you can return a malfunctioning product up to 3 years after you bought it). So the 50PA550T was sent to me as a replacement TV.
First the sound is worse for shore. Second I belive that ABL (Automatic Brightness Limiter) is much more aggressive in this model because I didn“t notice it in the old one. It got fever connections and I belive the picture to be worse than my old plasma, just try surfing on it as we speak though.

Is this a god replacement TV ore IOW is it as good ore better than my old one?
Is the ABL more agressive on never plasmas?
Can you really replace a old 1000 $ TV with an 400 $ just after 2 years? I now that technoligy is getting cheaper and cheaper but this fast? Bought this TV when it had been out for almost a year so I didnt pay no overprize.

Im not interested in tuners and such, I only use it as a media center and for couch-surfing

Worse sound
Input lag 50PA550T 63 ms, old tv 23 ms
Worse ABL effect. Turns the white blueish when its fullscreen.

How can a new TV be worse then the old ore am I missing something here?

Sounds like the problem is you are trying to use this as a PC monitor, and LCDs are better built for that then plasmas. Plenty of posts out there about people having problems with ABL when trying to use it as a PC monitor. The answer is always the same, get an LCD.

I would never expect great sound or even good sound from any flat panel display, especially when all the companies are mounting them on the back of the sets where they face the wall.

I've been ready to make the switch from LCD to Plasma and from 46 in. to 60 in. for a while now. I am interested in the 60PA6500 from a lot of the positive reviews I hear and the low price point. Overall I do not care that it is lacking some of the other bells and whistles as most other plasmas on the market. Sound is not an issue since that is what a surround sound is for. At the end of the day, I really just want a great picture for watching movies and sports and playing video games. I've been looking into some of the Panasonic models such as the P60ST50 which seems to have glowing reviews stating it is the best bang for buck TV. Obviously it is more expensive along with additional features such as 3D (which I don't care as much about), but how is the picture quality comparison between the two? If the P60ST50 is really that much better and well worth the price, then I can stretch the budget. But if the main reason why the 60PA6500 is one of the cheaper plasmas is primarily because it doesn't have all these extra amenities but still boasts a stunning picture that is comparable, then I think I should finally just bite the bullet on this set.

Thanks for any input.

Well I don't own a Panny so I can't compare the two. I can say compared to the plasma I owned 2 years ago (my mom now uses) the LG stands up very well.

If this will be mainly used for video games, the Panny rates the best for lowest input lag according to posts in several topics here.

It's funny you should mention the dimming cause I could not get the one in the store to brighten or take my changes. In retrospect, the tv accepts different setups for every setting, so be sur should are adjusting the correct input. On the dead pixel, mine has just not reared its head again. I'd take it back if it don't go away in time. I have more to add, but short on time.

For the person considering the psi sonic. Enjoy cooking yur brains out. These TVs are apples and oranges in emissions. And don't expect to compare the detail of a 50" to a 60" if so. 60 is much more pixel to work with and will show error faster.

On final for now. I thought I was going to return this set and just due to sheer size in mbed. But after a while, I can't. I'm totally adjusted and I have to say the colors are freaky good. The black is BLACK. Any one wishing to compare to LCD I suggest you watch green lantern on both. One is black - the other is INFINITE. You can't take anything away from their marketing on that one. It simply just looks like dead space in black sci fi space scenes...! I suspect this is a perk of the shines front glass...

Blacks are too crushed at 93 for my taste. To see any detail, I need to keep it in low 80's

I'm not sure I understand what you mean when you say that the "blacks are too crushed". Can you educate me on that?

Thanks

So "black", you can not see any detail within, which is unrealistic. Example: Shot of a man's face...sunlight hitting one side of face, the other in shadow. Shadowed side of face loses all detail...no texture in hair or skin details on face...just black or dark, solid shade.

Hello, has anyone tried the new firmware 03.29.12 ? Any difference that you can notice? It would be awesome that the " screen shut off after dark scene " BUG, has been fixed..

Well I finally got my replacement 50PA6500 from Dell (after the first one was some what beat up , but working) .

The new unit is from Aug/2012 (UG version) with a firmware of 03.01.06 . Right now Iam not going to upgrade the firmware as I really did not like the upgrade and outcome it did on the first unit to firmware 04.00.02 ( increased motion blur , picture got very fuzzy and almost SD like after a few hrs of usage ; even on Bluray) .

Iam putting the new unit through it paces as I speak running slides , and testing in general . I hope I do not encounter the same problems as the first unit , and Iam not quite sure if it was the firmware update or just unseen internal damage from the first tv being thrown around during shipping that was causing the flaws I encountered .

Only some time/usage will tell , crossing fingers .

I had a 42 pa 4500 and I took it back because the grayscale/shades looked off.the blacks were nice and black but it was way blacker than the next lighter shades of black.( like there was some shades missing). Also the brightest whites were a lot brighter than the next darker shades of white.Just not a very smooth grayscale, but it wasl inexpensive and had lots of good things about it.

Hi Krisz.

The answer to your question is in the post-cal snapshot that is linked in.the review. The gamma with those white balance settings is a mess - it was better pre-cal. The post-cal gamma ranges from 1.5 to 2.03! And since grayscale/gamma is the foundation for CMS adjustments, I would discount them as well.

This individual apparently does not know how to use the tools he has at his disposal.

So it will be nice to post a specific calibration for our LG plasmas that works fine. I'm searching the holy grail of picture quality

I would never recomend using someone elses settings. Every set is different and what works for one will probably not work for yours, and may make it looks worse.

Especially from the guy who wrote this article.

Just want to leave a few quick comments.

I set this up at my friends house, along with a home theater setup, and my initial reaction was that the picture quality on this TV was really poor.

I had them order an HD cable box and went to finish setting it up last night.

Also, I moved the 55" Samsung LNb6000 LED that used to be there and wall mounted it in my friends bedroom upstairs.

Second impression?

I got to be honest...I feel my initial impression was wrong.

This TV looked absolutely fantastic.

Although my friend wasn't sold on plasma at first, she ended up admitting the overall picture looks nicer than her expensive Samsung LED.

And my impression was that the picture quality was comparable to my Panasonic G10 and Samsung PNB860 plasmas.

Very impressed.

Screen glare is, of course, an issue but it's probable something I could live with for $799.99.

I think you will read quite a few posts where some peoples first impressions were not great, but after they got it home and tweaked the settings that impression changes.

For me the glare in daylight conditions only bothers me when I watch something with alot of dark scenes, like Aliens. If I watch something with alot of daylight scenes I only notice it if i look for it. After the sun goes down I notice nothing.

It's a great bare bones set for those who just want to sit down and use a TV for what it is meant to be used for and not all this other "smart TV" BS that is pushed on people.

Hello all!

I encountered this website when searching for reviews for the 60PA5500... and you guys know so much about TVs! This place is AWESOME!

I'd like a helpful nudge/push here....
I have the opportunity to buy this TV for $800. + $80 for a 3 year SquareTrade warranty.

I'm not usually indecisive but $900 is a lot of money for me...and I've been saving for a long time...And I just need someone to tell me that $800 is a good price for this TV, or not?
My budget is $900-950 inclusive of warranty so this seems perfect.

Do let me know please. Thanks.

The cheapest I've seen this set for is $799 so you are getting a good price.

I would check to see if Best Buy will price match that. From what I understand the Best Buy extended warranty covers burn in.

Most extended warranties and the manufacturers warranty does not cover burn in.

It appears Squaretrade warranty covers burn in as well: "What does a SquareTrade plan cover? Screen Failure| Dead pixels, lines on your screen, discoloration, or dim screens can ruin even the best TV show. "

Also: " Protection from Normal, Everyday Use| Drop it? Spill on it? Run over it? No worries. We cover accidents caused by you and people you know. "

Sounds like you could punch a hole in it and they'd still cover it. That being said, I just purchased a 50pa5500 for $450. Would you guys recommend extended warranties on plasmas? This is my first one. Thanks!

I don't see burn-in listed at all. However, if you have bad burn in, it seems like you can just drop it on the ground "accidentally" and get it fixed or a new one.

Edit: After doing some research, it doesn't seem like they cover burn-in at all.

Someone pointed out to me signal quality... Are you sure you are referring to a good solid test ground. Meaning, I have found that while comcast may have many free ON Demands (for example) that are broadcast in 1080i, CLEARLY that is not what you are getting. I suspect it depends on the usage in your area at the time. So the point is that I suspect it boils down to BANDWIDTH and thus the CONTENT of the actual signal you are receiving. AND that while you may get a 1080i or p or whatever broadcast - THE ACTUAL DATA CONTENT MAY BE COMPROMISED.

So to this poster and what you are referring. Have you tested this with a solid Blue Ray type presentation from say a PS3 or comparable / AND WITH HD HDMI (The connecting cable does make a difference there is NO DOUBT). Because I was pretty impressed with the HBO Comcast Green Lantern Broadcast in 1080i that recently stopped showing. What pushed me back onto the plasma was the blacks. The difference in the LED and Plasma is not even comparable. The LED I had would show a "Black screen", say in outer space scenes. HOWEVER, on the LG plasma, it presents as really dark space. Its like comparing a piece of black colored paper, to "nothiness with light projected though".... IMHO..

Set your gamma to medium. High black level will also crush blacks.

I'm not sure if I asked before, but what setting would lower the white level?
On some whites, like football jerseys, they are crushed with no detail. Kind of like crushed black, but with whites.

First time poster here!

I've been reading this entire thread and you guys have persuaded me into buying the 60PA6500! There is one concern that I have.. the plasma is going to be used for video gaming 80-90% of the time. I'm really worried about potential burn-in because of the nature of the games that I play. There's going to be static health bars, mini-maps, and user interfaces shown on the screen most if not all the time so I'm just wondering if I should continue with my purchase or purchase an LCD. I've read all about the 100-200 hour plasma break-in and am more than willing to refresh the tv during gameplay between each hour to prevent minor/temp burn-ins. Can you guys give me some advice?

Thanks!
