First post I've made to an A/V forum, but for the last couple months my wife & I've been surfing the web looking for a mount for our TV. Sounds a little silly, but the way our house - more of a cabin, really - is laid out, we had to find something that would do more vertical than horizontal movement.

Background: We bought a 59" plasma - a Samsung PN59D8000 - and with an open floor plan we really wanted to save the floor space for our dogs & furniture, and didn't want to put a TV stand anywhere. And unfortunately, above the mantle was the only real wall space available. Because we have a gas fireplace, we aren't as concerned about smoke, soot, or uncontrolled heat issues. However, the mantle is almost as tall as I am (I'm 5'9"), which means the TV would be much too high for comfortable viewing.

Solution: After looking around on the Web, we didn't see much in the way of available mounts that would bring the TV down to a reasonable viewing level. If I remember correctly, the best we were going to get was around 3" or so vertical movement from a standard mount. In fact, only one company seemed to have what we were looking for. Dynamic Mounting, LLC manufactures something they call the "Down & Out" mount for those who want the kind of vertical movement we were looking for.

According to the instructions, vertical movement varies by mantle depth, which was still a concern. We have an 11" deep mantle, and after some calculating, we figured out that if we stacked a few 2x4s deep and attached it as a frame using lag bolts to the roughly 10" log about 5" above the mantle, we could get about 27" of vertical movement out of the mount.

In any case, we were very happy with the results, and so while the company likes having its customers do its advertising (which this is, in a very real sense ), I also thought that others in a similar position might genuinely benefit from knowing what's available.

Being new, I can't post links otherwise I'd be happy to show our final results. If anyone is interested, send me a private message.
