Newburyport, MA: Help Picking Antenna

Newbie looking for what antenna to get.

I have been researching an in attic installed antenna (preferrable to on roof). I am looking for advice on a suitable antenna and, if I will need a preamp. My goal is the major networks, pbs and fox in high definition. They look like they are on the same azimuth so I do not think I need a rotator.

Location- Newburyport, MA 01950

We will be providing antenna service to one TV.

Inside attic mount if signal strength warrants (from what i read, I should expect a 10-30% drop in signal stength through the roof (traditional construcion - boards with asphalt tiles).

From TV Fool http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...0b866aad119a71

FCC site give me four bars of signal strength for-
WENH PBS 11-1 Hi-V

WPXG ION 21-1 UHF

WCVB ABC 5-1 UHF

WBZ CBS 4-1 UHF

WGBH PBS 2-1 UHF

WGBX PBS 44-1 UHF

WFXT FOX 25-1 UHF
Three bars of signal strength for-

WSBK IND 38-1 UHF

WUNI UNIVISION 27-1 UHF

WLVI CW 56-1 UHF

WMFP IND 62-1 UHF

WHDH NBC 7-1 UHF

WZMY MYTV 50-1 UHF

WMUR ABC 9-1 Hi-V

WNEU TELEMUNDO 60-1 UHF

WMTW ABC 8-1 Hi-V

WMEA PBS 26-1 UHF

WBPX ION 68-1 UHF

WUTF TELEFUTURA 66-1 UHF

Thank you for your help.

For your channels of interest you mentioned that are to the S/SW, this antenna should work for your address.
http://www.amazon.com/RCA-ANT751R-Ou...B5C/ref=sr_1_1
It comes with its own mounting bracket. Just hang it from a roof rafter an point S/SW. Connect to RG6 coax to your single TV and run a channel scan for OTA antenna channels, from the TV's channel setup menu.

No preamp needed.

All bets are off if you have a metal roof or any sort of foil insulation in the attic.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Do you think that will be "powerful" enough? It has a range of 40 miles and many of the stations I want to pick up are 39 miles. I want to install in my attic so expect losses from going through boards and asphalt shingles. Will that makes this antennas effective range less?

Thank you,
George

Mileage ratings listed by antenna sales sites are never accurate, and not what you should base your decision on. Your TVFool report indicates that your signal is strong at your address and that antenna should work fine for your major channels to the SW.

That's why we ask for a TVFool report, not mileage, when you are asking for antenna suggestions.

Thank you for explaining that for me. That is much less than I was expecting to pay, so many thanks. You kept me from "overkill".

Please put a location in the title of ALL antenna help threads. See my edit.

If You can find one the radio shack vu120 antenna worked for me in Salem NH in an attic.
Got all of the channels above in your post at 80%+ except WMEA and WBIN

For the channels of interest the OP mentioned, he does not need such a monster sized antenna at his address.

My house has boards (plywoods) and asphalt shingles and I have no problems receiving very weak signals. I depend on 1 edge diffraction on all my signals and I am located 30+ miles from Mt. Wilson. My TV's signal quality meter indicates better than 80% or more quality.

I installed the RCA ANT751R in my attic (crawl space above my third floor ~ 30ft) and connected to my HD TV. The reception has exceeded my expectations. Pointed ~ 226deg magnetic and pick up 13 stations. The major networks and pbs in HD plus stations like prime, mytv and some spanish. I had read the HD is better that what you get from comcast and I have to say the picture is stunning (55" visio LCD HD). Now to decide between between a no fee DVR or jump into a home media PC.

Side note: when i bought the RCA ANT751R antenna it was $57. It is know $22 on amazon - if you are in the maket for this class antenna, that is a steal.

Glad the ANT751 worked well for you. I'm sorry you paid more than it is now on sale for, but still, it's a lot cheaper than one month's cable bill. And picture quality of locals via OTA antenna is often better than compressed cable or satellite locals.

It's also on sale at walmart.com for under $30. With the advantage of an easy no hassle return if it doesn't work for someone.

arxaw - I have no second thoughts about the extra $30+. I should have done this years ago. Thank you again for your help, solid recommendation.

After adjusting position and TVFOOL recommended azimuth of the antenna (directional RCA model above) in my attic, I am able to recieve the cannels I care about. Slight adustments seemed to make more of an impact than you would expect. Keep in mind if are on a cell or radio with someone confirming adjustment impact on image/sound quality, move away from the antenna to get an accurate understanding of improvements/degredations. Your body next to the antenna will give you stronger readings than actual.

WENH PBS 11-1 Hi-V. This is Prime HD and gets you a second channel Explore 11-3 (and SD 11-2)

WCVB ABC 5-1 UHF

WBZ CBS 4-1 UHF

WGBH PBS 2-1 UHF (and the SD version)

WGBX PBS 44-1 UHF (this gets you Worls 44-2, Create 44-3, Kids 44-4)

WFXT FOX 25-1 UHF

WHDH NBC 7-1 UHF (and This TV 7-2)

WUNI UNIVISION 27-1 UHF (27-2 as well, in Spanish)

WLVI CW 56-1 UHF (and TCN 56-2)

WUTF Tel 66-1 UHF (Spanish)

When they broadcast in HD I have never had better. Ocassional pixilation on WGBH, but not enough viewing time to comment on weather impact etc.

I suppose I could get a second antenna and pick up Manchester NH or Portland ME, but do not see the point, yet.

Thanks to all who helped me. And, I hope above helps a fellow NBPTers trying to cut the cable. I am very pleased so far.
